The 2022 iPad Air (5th generation) Wi-Fi + Cellular, model A2589, is a capable tablet setup on paper: it supports 5G and LTE, Apple Pencil (2nd generation), and compatible Magic Keyboards. But this is a specification-led assessment, not a hands-on review. There are no independent performance, battery, display, typing, drawing, or reception tests here, so its value depends on the condition and price of the specific unit and accessories you find.
What this iPad Air 5 configuration includes
Apple introduced the iPad Air (5th generation) in 2022. Model A2589 is the Wi-Fi + Cellular version. Apple lists 64 GB and 256 GB capacities; the cellular model weighs 462 g, compared with 461 g for Wi-Fi-only. It measures 247.6 × 178.5 × 6.1 mm. Apple’s technical specifications identify the hardware and listed capabilities.
The tablet itself does not include the Magic Keyboard or Apple Pencil. Apple sells the keyboard separately, and the accessories are not interchangeable merely because their names are similar: confirm the exact iPad keyboard generation and Pencil model before buying.

Those figures describe manufacturer specifications, not independent measurements. They do not establish measured color accuracy, contrast, outdoor readability, or how smooth the display appears in use. Apple also lists Wi-Fi 6 with 2×2 MIMO, Bluetooth 5.0, USB-C, Touch ID, stereo speakers, and dual microphones.
Cellular connectivity: 5G, eSIM, and carrier checks
A2589 supports Apple-listed 5G NR and LTE bands, nano-SIM and eSIM, and integrated GPS/GNSS. Apple describes cellular connectivity as data-only and advises customers to check availability with their carrier. Band support alone does not guarantee that a particular carrier, plan, roaming arrangement, or location will work.

Those facts depend on the specific device and seller; they are not established by the model’s general specification sheet.

Because Apple uses the Magic Keyboard name for multiple iPad and Mac accessories, match the exact product and generation rather than relying on the name alone.
These are compatibility and feature specifications, not a typing-comfort assessment. No keyboard test was conducted. Check the layout, condition, and exact model in the listing before purchase.

Yes. Apple lists Apple Pencil (2nd generation) as compatible with iPad Air (5th generation), which has a magnetic Pencil connector. Apple also lists Apple Pencil (USB-C) as compatible, but compatibility does not mean the two pencils have identical features. Choose the model that matches the functions you need, and confirm the listing names “Apple Pencil (2nd generation)” if that is the stylus you want.
Apple’s specification confirms compatibility, not drawing latency, pressure response, charging workflow, or performance in particular apps. No hands-on Pencil test was conducted.

Software support and what it does—and does not—show
Apple’s iPadOS 26 feature document from 2025 includes iPad Air (5th generation) among supported models for the listed features. One listed feature is a more precise and responsive cursor when using Magic Keyboard or a Bluetooth mouse or trackpad.
This establishes support for the features described in that document; it does not establish the latest point-release status, how long future updates will continue, or performance parity with newer iPads. The document is also not a benchmark of this model.
Is the iPad Air 5 cellular setup still worth buying?
It may suit someone who wants a relatively light iPad with mobile data, a compatible trackpad keyboard, and Apple Pencil (2nd generation) support. The cellular version is most useful when you need data access away from Wi-Fi and can confirm carrier activation for the exact unit. If you expect to use it mainly at home or work on Wi-Fi, compare the Wi-Fi-only version as well as the total cost of the tablet and accessories.
