“Your IP address has been banned” usually means a website or its security provider has blocked a network address, but similar access errors can come from an account lock, a work or school policy, a country restriction, or a temporary connection problem. The exact wording and error code matter. Compare where the problem follows, check ordinary network causes, then contact the party that controls the restriction.

What the message can mean

An IP restriction applies to network traffic, not necessarily to your personal account. A service may block an individual IP address, a group of addresses associated with an internet provider or organization (an autonomous system number, or ASN), or traffic from a country or region. Cloudflare documents errors 1006, 1007, 1008, and 1106 as indicating that the visitor’s IP has been banned; error 1009 indicates a country or region restriction. See Cloudflare’s 1xxx error guide.

An account restriction follows the account or identity instead. For example, an account may be locked, or a sign-in attempt may be blocked because a service cannot verify a new device or location. A work or school sign-in can also be limited by an organization’s policy rather than by the website or your home network.

A generic “Access denied” or HTTP 403 response does not, by itself, prove that your IP is banned. Netflix notes that one of its blocked or 403 flows can reflect a temporary device or network connection issue, while Google’s “Unusual traffic from your computer network” warning can be triggered by activity from other users sharing the same network or VPN.

TP-Link AX1800 WiFi 6 Router (Archer AX21 V5)
  • DUAL-BAND WIFI 6 ROUTER: Wi-Fi 6(802.11ax) technology achieves faster speeds, greater capacity and reduced network congestion compared to the previous gen. All WiFi routers require a separate modem. Dual-Band WiFi routers do not support the 6 GHz band.
  • AX1800: Enjoy smoother and more stable streaming, gaming, downloading with 1.8 Gbps total bandwidth (up to 1200 Mbps on 5 GHz and up to 574 Mbps on 2.4 GHz). Performance varies by conditions, distance to devices, and obstacles such as walls.
  • CONNECT MORE DEVICES: Wi-Fi 6 technology communicates more data to more devices simultaneously using revolutionary OFDMA technology
  • EXTENSIVE COVERAGE: Achieve the strong, reliable WiFi coverage with Archer AX1800 as it focuses signal strength to your devices far away using Beamforming technology, 4 high-gain antennas and an advanced front-end module (FEM) chipset
  • OUR CYBERSECURITY COMMITMENT: TP-Link is a signatory of the U.S. Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency’s (CISA) Secure-by-Design pledge. This device is designed, built, and maintained, with advanced security as a core requirement.

Clues in the wording

  • Explicit IP-ban or region code: points toward a site-side network rule. Cloudflare documents IP-ban meanings for 1006, 1007, 1008, and 1106, and a country or region denial for 1009.
  • Account locked or sign-in verification: points toward an account recovery or identity-verification process. Google says a new device or location may trigger a sign-in block when it cannot verify the user.
  • Organization policy notice: may mean your employer or school allows sign-in only to selected organizations. Microsoft calls this policy “tenant restrictions.”
  • Unusual-traffic CAPTCHA: may involve automated requests from your device or another user on a shared network, including a VPN connection.
  • Generic 403 or access denied: is ambiguous without the service’s code or support guidance.

Find out whether the account or network is the common factor

Use controlled comparisons rather than changing several settings at once. A problem that follows one network across devices suggests a network-related cause; a problem that follows one account across networks suggests an account or service-side restriction. Neither pattern proves the service’s internal decision, so treat the results as clues.

  1. Save the details. Record the exact page URL, time, complete error text and code, and any Ray ID or request reference displayed. Avoid relying on a paraphrase such as “it says access denied.”
  2. Try the same account on another device connected to the same network. If the error appears there too, the network may be part of the problem. Netflix recommends another-device testing on the same network in one of its error flows.
  3. If permitted, try the same account on a trusted alternate connection. If it works there, that points toward the original network or its public IP, but does not establish that an intentional block was mistaken.
  4. Consider whether other accounts or services are affected. A single account failing on multiple networks is different from multiple devices failing only on one network. Do not create another account to get around a restriction.

Google’s guidance for sign-in blocks also suggests trying a familiar device and location and updating the app. Those steps are relevant to a verification problem, not a way to clear a site’s IP or region rule.

Check common network causes safely

If the message mentions unusual traffic, or if the issue appears limited to a shared network, check for causes that do not require bypassing a site policy:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Complete a CAPTCHA if the service offers one.
  • Check whether a device or another user on the network is generating automated requests. Google recommends checking network devices and contacting a network administrator or IT professional if the warning continues.
  • Review whether a VPN, proxy, or tunnel service is active, especially if it was recently enabled or changed. A shared VPN address may be used by other people as well.
  • If a device may be compromised, investigate it for malware; Google includes this among its checks for unusual-traffic warnings.
  • For a service-specific connection problem, restore VPN, proxy, or custom DNS settings that you changed. Netflix lists these settings among its troubleshooting steps and recommends restarting the home network for relevant connection issues.

These are diagnostic steps, not a promise that changing networks or addresses will reverse an intentional restriction. If the service identifies an IP or region ban, ask the site owner to review it instead.

Contact the party that can resolve the restriction

What the evidence points to Who to contact What to provide or request
Site-side IP or ASN restriction The website owner or its support team Give the exact error, time, page URL, and any request reference; ask them to investigate the security rule affecting your IP or network. Cloudflare says visitors should contact the site owner, and that Cloudflare support cannot override a customer’s security settings. See Cloudflare’s error guidance.
Country or region restriction The website owner Ask whether access from your location is permitted and whether the restriction was applied in error. Cloudflare’s visitor guidance for error 1009 directs users to contact the site owner. See Cloudflare’s 1xxx error guide.
Account lock or identity verification The service’s official account recovery or unlock process Follow the service’s recovery instructions for the affected account. Microsoft explains its locked-account process at Microsoft account recovery support; Google Drive describes verification blocks tied to a new device or location at Google Drive Help.
Work or school tenant restriction Your organization’s work or school account administrator Ask whether the organization permits sign-in to that service or tenant. Microsoft’s explanation of tenant restrictions is at Microsoft Learn.
Persistent home network or ISP-level problem Your ISP, or your local network administrator Share the affected service, timestamps, error details, and results of device/network comparisons. Cloudflare distinguishes an ISP-level block from a site owner’s restriction in its error explanation.

How to interpret the comparison

Think in terms of scope, persistence, and control:

  • One account, several networks: account lock, verification, or a service decision becomes more plausible.
  • Several devices, one network: investigate the shared public IP, router, VPN, or ISP path; a site rule may affect everyone using that address.
  • One device, several networks: focus on that device, its app, browser, VPN/proxy, or account session.
  • Work or school account only: check with the organization administrator, particularly when the error names an organization policy.

Changing a public IP, using a VPN, or switching accounts is not an appropriate substitute for an appeal when a site has intentionally restricted access. The party that owns the rule—site operator, organization administrator, account service, or ISP—determines the authorized remedy.
