IONOS AI Receptionist starts at $39 per month in the current US listing, with plans that scale from 30 included calls to unlimited calls. It can answer calls on its own number or receive forwarded calls from your existing business line. IONOS also provides a free browser-based test call, but its own help documentation cautions that generative AI can give inaccurate answers. Treat a test as essential before routing customer calls.
This review is based on IONOS product and help documentation, not independent call testing. Prices and entitlements below reflect IONOS’s US offer as listed October 7, 2026; confirm current terms and checkout totals before subscribing.
What IONOS AI Receptionist does
IONOS AI Receptionist is a hosted phone-answering service configured in its AI Frontdesk interface. After setup, the assistant has its own phone number. You can give that number to customers directly or forward calls from your established business number. The setup wizard can draw information from an existing website, but a website is optional and imported content should be reviewed and expanded with accurate business details.
IONOS describes features including call history, email summaries, and structured details such as the caller and reason for calling. Appointment booking and integrations depend on the plan. IONOS product materials cite HubSpot, Salesforce, and Zendesk as integration examples; they also mention Calendly and Cal.com for scheduling. Setup Help additionally lists Google Calendar and Microsoft 365 appointment options. These examples do not mean every integration or booking feature is included at every tier.

How call volume changes the cost
At exactly the included allowance, the listed monthly prices work out to $1.30 per included call on Flex ($39 divided by 30) and $0.69 on Flex Pro ($69 divided by 100). These are simple calculations from IONOS’s listed price and allowance, not quoted IONOS metrics. Unlimited cannot be normalized without knowing monthly call volume.

Overages can shift the comparison. For example, 50 calls on Flex would cost $48.80 before tax: $39 plus 20 additional calls at $0.49 each. Flex Pro lists 100 calls for $69. Whether a tier makes sense depends on your expected call volume and whether you need its specific features.

How setup and call forwarding work
The setup wizard guides configuration in AI Frontdesk. Add or verify your company information rather than relying on website import alone. Before going live, check opening hours, address, service area, supported services, prices, appointment rules, and instructions for transferring callers. You can also configure the assistant’s language, greeting, conversational behavior, voice, and speaking speed. IONOS notes that language and voice choices affect which voice options are available.
There are two practical ways to route calls:
- Use the assistant’s number: Share its dedicated number with callers, without changing the routing of your existing business line.
- Forward your existing number: Configure your current phone service to forward all calls or only calls that go unanswered. For unanswered-call forwarding, IONOS’s guidance gives a default ring duration of 15 seconds before forwarding. The steps differ between mobile phones and landline or router systems.
Forwarding settings and caller-ID behavior can depend on your phone carrier and setup. Follow the instructions for your specific phone system, then confirm in a test call that transfers reach the intended destination and that the receiving side sees the caller number where supported.

Can you test IONOS AI Receptionist before launch?
Yes. IONOS documents a browser-based test call that lets you try the greeting, responses, and call transfer. It requires a connected headset or a microphone and speakers. IONOS states: “Test calls are free of charge and do not count towards your allowance.” The test-call page recommends trying appointment inquiries, complaints, and general questions, then testing again after you change settings.

- Ask the most common customer question and an unusual but plausible one. Check the response against your approved business information.
- Verify opening hours, address, service area, and any limits on what the assistant may promise.
- If your plan includes appointment booking, test availability and booking rules, including any restrictions customers need to know.
- Trigger the intended transfer path, including a scenario you consider urgent or sensitive, and confirm the call reaches the right person or destination.
- Check whether the correct caller number is passed through on your carrier and receiving setup.
- Repeat relevant tests after changing business information, the greeting, language, voice, or routing.
These checks are practical recommendations based on the documented setup and test workflow; they are not a guarantee that every call will be handled correctly.

Accuracy limits, privacy, and operational safeguards
IONOS product-page language says the assistant will not invent facts when unsure and can route calls based on trigger phrases. That is a vendor claim, not an independently verified result. IONOS Help warns that generative AI may occasionally make inaccurate statements or fail to follow specifications fully. Review important answers closely during testing, and give the assistant clear boundaries and escalation instructions rather than relying on confident-sounding responses.
IONOS represents the service as GDPR-compliant and encrypted. Those statements were not independently verified here, and the cited product material does not establish data retention, processing locations, or the contractual safeguards that apply to a particular account. IONOS’s routing guidance says businesses must inform customers about data processing and add a website privacy notice concerning AI-powered telephony when the assistant begins answering calls; it warns that failing to do so may have legal consequences. Treat this as IONOS’s instruction, not a legal determination for every jurisdiction. Review applicable privacy obligations and the terms governing your use before launch.
Who should consider each plan?
- Flex: Consider it if 30 included calls suit your expected volume and you do not need appointment booking, API integrations, or the receptionist-only website widget. Include the per-call overage rate in your estimate.
- Flex Pro: Consider it if you expect more calls, need up to five forwarding destinations, or want appointment booking or the website widget.
- Unlimited: Consider it if your call volume is high or unpredictable, you need unlimited forwarding, or you require the advanced API integrations listed for this tier.
These are feature-based distinctions, not a universal plan recommendation. Compare your expected monthly calls, likely overages, routing needs, and required integrations against the current checkout offer.
