Ionocaloric cooling is a research-stage refrigeration cycle that uses electrically moved ions to change a material’s phase and temperature. It could eventually avoid conventional vapor refrigerants, but it has not yet been shown to replace household or commercial refrigerators—or to eliminate refrigeration’s greenhouse-gas emissions.

How ionocaloric cooling works

Most refrigerators use vapor compression: a refrigerant evaporates at one pressure to absorb heat, then condenses at another pressure to release it. Ionocaloric cooling takes a different route. It changes the ionic environment around a solid phase, prompting a phase change and a thermal response.

A simple analogy is salt lowering water’s melting point. In the ionocaloric cycle, voltage moves ions to control the phase change: melting absorbs heat, while solidification releases it. The 2022 study’s experimental system used electrodialysis to separate materials and demonstrated the cycle with an applied voltage. The original study and Berkeley Lab’s explanation describe the approach.

What the 2022 experiment demonstrated

Drew Lilley and Ravi Prasher’s 2022 paper in Science reported theoretical and experimental work on an ionocaloric Stirling refrigeration cycle. In that experimental system, the researchers reported a temperature lift of up to 25°C and a coefficient of performance (COP) equal to 30% of the Carnot COP, using a voltage strength of about 0.22 volts. These figures describe the study’s demonstration, not the performance of a complete consumer refrigerator or a field-tested commercial system. The paper provides the primary results; PubMed’s record lists its bibliographic details and abstract.

Carnot COP is a theoretical efficiency benchmark for a heat-moving cycle operating between specified temperatures. Reporting a fraction of that benchmark helps compare cycle concepts, but it does not by itself tell a buyer how much electricity a finished refrigerator would use. That requires system-level measurements, including the energy for moving ions and operating the rest of the equipment.

What remains unproven

The experiment establishes a research demonstration, not a market-ready appliance. The reported results do not show that a complete ionocaloric refrigerator is commercially available, that it outperforms vapor-compression equipment in real-world use, or that its full life-cycle impacts have been assessed. The published study compares the ionocaloric effect with other caloric effects under low applied field strengths; it is not an apples-to-apples product comparison.

Berkeley Lab’s technology-transfer description identifies sodium iodide and ethylene carbonate in the prototype and discusses potential uses such as air conditioning, refrigeration, and food preservation. Those are development possibilities, not proof that a consumer product exists or that the proposed benefits have been achieved at practical scale. The lab’s technology-transfer summary describes these materials and potential applications.

Useful comparisons with established systems will need to account for cooling capacity, temperature lift, system-level efficiency, voltage and total energy input, durability, safety, cost, and life-cycle climate impact. The available study and lab descriptions do not establish values across all those measures.

Would it end greenhouse-gas use in refrigeration?

Potentially, ionocaloric cooling could avoid the conventional vapor refrigerants used in many systems. That is narrower than ending greenhouse-gas emissions from refrigeration. Electricity consumption can cause emissions depending on how power is generated, and the materials, equipment, manufacturing, and disposal of a future system would also matter to its full climate impact.

Nor is ionocaloric cooling the only route away from high-global-warming-potential refrigerants. The European Commission lists non-fluorinated options already used in different refrigeration applications, including carbon dioxide (R-744), propane (R-290), and isobutane (R-600a); ammonia is used in industrial refrigeration and food processing. These refrigerants are not interchangeable drop-in choices: application, system design, safety, flammability, efficiency, and climate impact all matter. The Commission’s overview discusses these alternatives.

In the United States, the EPA announced in 2021 that its rule would phase down HFC production and consumption by 85% over 15 years under the AIM Act. That is a description of the announced policy, not a statement of its current implementation status. The EPA announcement gives the historical policy context.

What to watch as the technology develops

Ionocaloric cooling is worth watching as a possible alternative cycle, but the central question is whether a laboratory effect can become a reliable, affordable system with useful capacity and competitive energy use. Berkeley Lab reported a provisional patent and licensing availability in January 2023; that dated report does not establish current patent or licensing status. The 2023 report also quotes study lead Drew Lilley describing the challenge of finding refrigerants that cool efficiently, safely, and with lower environmental harm. The quote is a dated account of the problem, not evidence that established alternatives do not exist.
