Short answer: You do not unlock Invincible VS DLC fighters by leveling your account, finishing Story Mode, or playing Ranked. The launch game had 18 characters. The Year 1 Character Pass adds four post-launch fighters as paid entitlements: Universa, The Immortal, Angstrom Levy, and a fourth fighter scheduled for December 2026 whose identity has not been announced in the official information available on October 13, 2026. What counts as a character unlock in Invincible VS?
Invincible VS has two separate systems that are easy to confuse:
- Fighter ownership: permission to select a character in the game. Post-launch fighters are delivered through paid DLC or an edition that contains the Year 1 Character Pass.
- Progression rewards: items earned by gaining XP and completing modes. These include cosmetics and other profile or game-content rewards, not the DLC fighters described in the pass.
Skybound’s support documentation explains that a match grants XP to your player account and to the three characters on your team. Account and character levels can produce cosmetics, arenas, music, and additional rewards. The same documentation does not state that leveling grants Universa, The Immortal, Angstrom Levy, or any other pass fighter. Treat the pass as a purchase entitlement, not as a challenge track.

Roster size: 18 at launch, 21 after Angstrom Levy
Xbox Wire’s launch announcement says Quarter Up released Invincible VS on April 30, 2026, with a full 18-character roster and four game modes. That number describes the starting roster, not the eventual total.
Universa and The Immortal were announced as the first two DLC characters, joining on June 30, 2026. On October 1, Executive Producer Mike Willette announced that Angstrom Levy would join on October 13 as the third DLC fighter and the 21st playable character. As of October 13, that date has arrived, so Angstrom Levy should be treated as available rather than as an upcoming character.
The Year 1 Character Pass listing schedules a fourth fighter for December 2026 but does not name that fighter. Do not infer the character’s identity from rumors, artwork, or an unnamed store slot. Until an official announcement identifies the fighter, the accurate description is “the fourth Year 1 pass fighter, scheduled for December 2026.”

Year 1 Character Pass: what it includes
The Year 1 Character Pass is listed as an entitlement to four additional fighters released during 2026. The listing requires the base game. It also includes Zero Suit Mark and four color variants, which are cosmetic items rather than extra playable characters.

Store schedules can change, and the pass listing’s earlier timing for the third slot does not match the later October announcement. Use the dated October 13 announcement for Angstrom Levy’s actual release date. The December timing is the schedule shown for the unnamed fourth slot, not a guarantee that its name or exact launch hour is already known.
How to get each DLC fighter
Buy the Year 1 Character Pass
If you want all four pass fighters, the pass is the most direct route. You must own the base game; the pass is not a standalone copy of Invincible VS. Buying the entitlement does not replace the installation of the base game or automatically make cosmetic add-ons appear if your platform requires separate downloads.

Buy an edition that includes the pass
The Digital Deluxe package combines the base game with the Year 1 Character Pass, profile-card cosmetics, and bonus skins for Conquest and Allen the Alien. This route is intended for someone who does not yet own the game and wants the pass content bundled with the game.
Use the Digital Deluxe Upgrade if you already own the standard edition
Skybound’s Help Center identifies a Digital Deluxe Upgrade for existing standard-edition owners. The upgrade does not include the base game; it supplies the Deluxe entitlements. If you already own the standard game, this avoids purchasing a second base-game license, but verify that the upgrade is listed for your exact platform and edition.
Purchase an individual fighter when offered
Individual DLC availability depends on the storefront. The Steam DLC catalog displays separate entries for The Immortal and Universa, along with cosmetic skins and bundles. That confirms an individual-purchase route for those entries on Steam, but it does not establish that every fighter, every platform, or every region uses the same catalog structure. Check the store page for the platform on which you play before assuming that Angstrom Levy or the December fighter is sold separately.

There is no universally verified “best value” option because the answer changes with ownership, desired fighters, platform, region, and current promotions. A bundle can be practical for a new player who wants the base game and all four fighters, while an individual listing may suit someone who wants only an already-released character.
Step-by-step: buying and making DLC available
- Identify your base-game license. Confirm that Invincible VS is owned on the same platform account you use to play. The Year 1 Character Pass and the Digital Deluxe Upgrade both require the base game.
- Open the platform’s official store. Search for Invincible VS and inspect the edition or add-on name. Read the itemization rather than relying only on a “Deluxe” label.
- Match the purchase to your goal. Select the Year 1 Character Pass for the four-fighter entitlement, the Digital Deluxe edition when you need the base game and Deluxe contents together, or an individual fighter listing when one is available.
- Check platform and region details. Prices and currencies shown in one storefront are not universal. The Steam catalog’s euro prices, for example, should not be copied as a general price for other markets.
- Complete the purchase on the correct account. DLC licenses are normally tied to the account and platform that processed the transaction. A purchase made on a different account may not appear in your game.
- Download every associated add-on. Skybound’s Deluxe guidance says to download the associated add-ons from the platform store to access Deluxe entitlements. Do not assume that purchasing the package automatically installed every component.
- Restart the game and inspect the roster. After installation, close and relaunch Invincible VS, then check character select. If a fighter is still locked, verify the add-on’s installation status and that the game is running on the purchasing account.
What progression actually unlocks
Progression is still useful, but it serves a different purpose from DLC ownership. Skybound says match XP is awarded both to your account and to each of the three characters on your team. This lets you raise player and character levels while collecting rewards.

Arcade Ladders, Story Mode, and Ranked progression
Skybound identifies Arcade Ladders, Story Mode, and Ranked progression as ways to earn cosmetics. Story Mode also provides alternate costumes. The documentation does not describe any of these activities as a method for obtaining the four Year 1 pass fighters.
Why a “locked” character can be confusing
A roster can display owned fighters, unowned DLC, and cosmetic customization in the same interface. Seeing a lock icon after leveling does not mean another level threshold is necessarily missing. First determine whether the character belongs to the base roster or to a paid add-on, then check your account’s DLC ownership and installation.
Training mode and practicing DLC fighters
Training is available from Main Menu → Training. The official Training FAQ identifies two choices:

The FAQ does not state whether a player can select an unowned DLC fighter in Practice or Tutorial. Therefore, do not promise a free trial in Training, and do not claim that every DLC fighter is inaccessible there without checking a current platform or in-game notice. The only confirmed point is that Training exists and is reached through that menu path.

An earlier store listing placed the third character in September, while the later October 1 announcement set Angstrom Levy’s date as October 13. When those statements conflict, the later dated announcement is the appropriate reference for Angstrom’s launch. The discrepancy is a reason to use calendar dates, not vague wording such as “coming soon.”
Troubleshooting when a purchased fighter is still unavailable
The pass or upgrade is not recognized
- Confirm that the base game and add-on were purchased for the same platform family and account.
- Open the platform’s manage-content or add-on screen and check that the pass or upgrade is installed.
- Restart the game after the add-on finishes downloading.
- Check whether the store labels the item as an upgrade that requires the standard edition; an upgrade is not a substitute for the base game.
The character appears but remains locked
Do not grind levels as a first response. Progression is documented for cosmetics and other rewards, not DLC fighter licenses. Recheck the entitlement, installation state, and account used for the purchase.

You cannot find the character in your region’s store
Store catalogs differ by platform and geography. Search the game’s add-on page rather than relying on a listing from another country. A Steam entry or euro price does not prove that the same item is sold, priced, or packaged identically elsewhere.

Review the Deluxe item list and download its associated add-ons. The Deluxe contents include profile-card cosmetics and Conquest and Allen the Alien bonus skins in addition to the base game and pass; they may be delivered as separate downloadable components.
