0x80180013 means Windows MDM enrollment has hit a device-cap restriction: Microsoft maps it to idErrorDeviceLimit and MENROLL_E_DEVICECAPREACHED. The first fix is to have the affected user or their IT administrator review enrolled devices and remove or unenroll obsolete records under the organization’s procedures. If the visible device count seems low, ask IT to check the user’s records in both Intune and Microsoft Entra and verify the tenant’s actual enrollment limit.

What Intune error 0x80180013 means

Microsoft’s Windows MDM enrollment troubleshooting guide maps 0x80180013 to idErrorDeviceLimit and MENROLL_E_DEVICECAPREACHED. Microsoft’s MDM registration error values reference describes it as a user having enrolled too many devices and recommends deleting or unenrolling old ones.

You may see a message such as “Your account has reached the maximum device limit for connecting to your work or school.” The restriction is determined by the organization’s configuration. Do not assume a universal cap: a limit of five mentioned in one Microsoft Q&A case describes that user’s situation, not every Intune tenant.

How to fix the device-limit error

  1. Ask the user or IT administrator to review enrolled devices. Identify devices associated with the affected user and compare the count with the enrollment limit that applies to that user and platform. Administrators should confirm the tenant’s current settings rather than relying on a number found in an unrelated case.
  2. Remove or unenroll obsolete devices carefully. Microsoft recommends deleting or unenrolling old devices. Before removing a record, follow the organization’s ownership, security, and retention procedures; removing a record can affect how that device is managed.
  3. Check for remaining records in Intune and Microsoft Entra. If enrollment still fails after visible cleanup, ask an administrator to look for older records tied to the user in both services. In a Microsoft Q&A report, older Intune records were implicated, and a Microsoft staff response advised checking Microsoft Entra for remaining device records. That case is a useful lead, not proof that stale records cause every occurrence.
  4. Retry enrollment after the relevant cleanup. Once IT confirms the appropriate records have been removed or unenrolled and the applicable limit is no longer reached, try connecting the device to the work or school account again. If the error remains, continue with the readiness checks below.

If cleanup does not resolve enrollment

Check the general Windows enrollment prerequisites. These are not the meaning of 0x80180013, but they can prevent enrollment from succeeding for other reasons. Microsoft’s Windows enrollment troubleshooting guidance recommends confirming that:

  • The user has a valid Intune license.
  • Automatic MDM enrollment is enabled for users who need it.
  • Windows enrollment is allowed by the organization.

Portal labels and tenant settings may change, so the administrator should verify the current configuration before altering enrollment restrictions or deleting a device record. If you do not have access to enrollment records or policy settings, give IT the exact code 0x80180013 and ask them to check the user’s applicable limit and device records in Intune and Microsoft Entra.
