If someone is threatening to share an intimate photo or video of you, you can seek help even if nothing has been posted and even if no account was hacked. Stop responding, do not pay or send more material, tell someone you trust, and report the person. If an image is online, report it to the platform; in the United States, covered platforms must provide a removal-request process and remove the image and known identical copies within 48 hours of a request.
What counts as intimate-image abuse?
It can include creating, sharing, or threatening to share an intimate image or video without the person’s permission. The image might be genuine, digitally altered, or AI-generated, including a deepfake. A threat is enough to ask for help; you do not have to wait for a post to appear. The FTC’s guidance on image-based abuse explains the issue and U.S. response options.
“Hacking” is only one possible route. People may use deception, impersonation, coercion, retaliation, or financial extortion. Whatever the method, the person targeted is not to blame for someone else’s threat or decision to share an image.

What should you do if this is happening now?
- Stop engaging and do not comply. Do not pay, send more images, provide financial-account details, or give the person access to your device. The FTC and FBI advise ending contact, blocking the person, and reporting their account. Avoid anyone who offers paid “recovery” or removal help; the FBI warns sextortion victims not to pay for help.
- Save relevant evidence if you can do so safely. Keep messages, account names, profile links, payment demands, and timestamps. Do not forward or repost an intimate image to document it. For minors, avoid downloading or circulating sexual images; ask a trusted adult or the relevant reporting service how to proceed. The FBI’s sextortion guidance advises reporting and seeking support.
- Tell someone you trust. A friend, family member, counselor, or other trusted person can help you make reports and avoid handling the crisis alone. If the person targeted is young, reassure them that they are the victim and should ask an adult for help; do not shame or blame them.
- Report the threat to law enforcement. Contact local law enforcement and the FBI at tips.fbi.gov or 1-800-CALL-FBI. For a minor, NCMEC’s CyberTipline is another reporting route.
- If content is posted, report it to the service hosting it. Use the platform’s reporting flow or help center for intimate-image abuse. The steps vary by service and may depend on whether you can access an account. Include the relevant post or account details, but do not amplify the image by reposting it.
Which removal or reporting route should you use?
These options do different jobs: the hosting platform handles a takedown request, image-matching tools can help participating platforms identify matches, and the FTC is an escalation path for certain platform failures in the United States.

The FTC’s Take It Down Act compliance guidance says covered social media, messaging, image-sharing, and video-sharing platforms must offer a way to request removal and remove an intimate image and known identical copies within 48 hours of a request. This U.S. requirement covers real, digitally altered, and AI-generated intimate images. It does not establish that every website or service outside the United States is covered. If a covered platform does not provide or follow its process, report the failure at TakeItDown.ftc.gov.
How can you reduce exposure without blaming yourself?
Prevention can reduce opportunities for targeting, but it cannot guarantee that a recipient will not copy or share something sent online. The FBI recommends practical caution:

- Limit personal details visible on public profiles.
- Be wary of new online contacts, requests to move a conversation to another service, and claims that photos or videos prove someone’s identity.
- Recognize that images can be stolen, altered, or used to impersonate someone.
- Block and report suspicious requests instead of continuing a conversation that feels coercive.
- Remember that “disappearing” messages or images may still be captured or persist.
For caregivers, the FBI recommends open conversations and reviewing a young person’s privacy settings together. These are risk-reduction steps, not a guarantee that abuse cannot happen.

You do not have to manage threats, reporting, and takedown requests alone. The FBI directs victims to reporting and support resources, and the FTC lists the National Domestic Violence Hotline for people experiencing image-based abuse. For minors, involve a trusted adult and consider both NCMEC’s CyberTipline and Take It Down. If you feel in immediate danger, contact local emergency services.
