ETERNAL ANIMA is a new time-travel role-playing game directed by Katsuhisa Higuchi, a former lead programmer on Chrono Trigger and contributor to Final Fantasy titles. Marvelous has announced a March 4, 2027 release for Nintendo Switch 2, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S and PC, with Famitsu listing the Steam release for March 5 at 3:00 a.m.
The game uses a traditional command-battle foundation, then adds a forecast system called Future Sight Battles. Players see the coming turn before committing commands, manipulate enemy positions on that timeline and build characters around inherited jobs, selectable abilities and replaceable machine parts.

Why the Chrono Trigger connection matters
Higuchi’s credit is the reason ETERNAL ANIMA has attracted attention before release, but the connection needs to be understood correctly. He previously worked as a lead programmer on Chrono Trigger and also worked on Final Fantasy games. Shioda is the producer. Their involvement explains the project’s interest in classic command-driven JRPG design; it does not make ETERNAL ANIMA a sequel, remake or licensed continuation of Chrono Trigger.

The creators describe the project as the “JRPG that we want to play.” Higuchi has also said, “I believe that adventure and combat go hand in hand. In particular, I think battles account for 70 to 80 percent of what makes a JRPG enjoyable.” That 70–80 percent figure is Higuchi’s opinion about the form, not an independent measurement. His stated goal is to preserve the feel of classic games while making the experience approachable to a wider audience.

A world split between a ruined present and its past
ETERNAL ANIMA takes place in Grastella, a world whose continents have sunk beneath the sea. The remaining population lives in the floating White City, ruled by a God-King who presents an unchanging society as an ideal and suppresses progress.
Wade begins as a White City security officer who has lost more than three years of memory. After awakening the ability to read memories left in objects, he becomes an outcast, escapes into the forbidden sea and travels across four lost continents.
Time travel is built into the main route rather than offered as an unrestricted system. Players encounter a continent in its past and later see what that history produced in the present. Higuchi has explained that keeping time travel tied to the main story helps the team avoid contradictions and paradoxes. The paired eras also serve the game’s stated themes of “inheritance” and “evolution.” Wade can alter history, so decisions in the past can change the future the party reaches.

How Future Sight Battles work
Future Sight is the game’s central mechanical difference from a conventional command-battle JRPG. Before finalizing commands, the player can inspect the upcoming timeline and see the predicted enemy actions, targets and damage. The forecast turns an incoming attack into a problem the player can attempt to rearrange.
- Read the forecast. Check when each enemy will act, which attack it is expected to use, who will be targeted and how much damage is predicted.
- Choose an intervention. Attack a weakness, defeat a threat or select a command that changes the order of events. The objective is not always maximum damage; it may be preventing a dangerous action.
- Push enemies backward. A successful weakness hit moves an enemy later on the timeline. If it is pushed completely off the visible turn, the result is a Break and that enemy loses its action for the turn.
- Spend resources deliberately. Actions build BP, which can strengthen commands or unlock character-specific finishing moves. MP and other resources remain limited, so a safe forecast does not make every powerful option free.
- Plan beyond the preview. The system removes uncertainty about the visible turn’s predicted damage and evasion outcomes, but later turns still depend on what survives, which resources were spent and how the timeline develops.
This makes Future Sight more than a damage calculator. The tactical choice is which predicted harm to accept, which attack to interrupt and when a limited resource is worth using to create a Break.
Character growth is built around inheritance and loadouts
Wade’s Psychometry
Wade’s Psychometry, also referred to as 読思術, reads the memories held in relics. Those memories can grant him a dead hero’s job, skills or special attack. Exploration therefore expands Wade’s command list as well as the party’s possible compositions.

- This is the BLACK LABEL edition of Chrono Cross.
- Not a Greatest Hits reprint.
Learned skills are equipped in limited quantities. That restriction turns relic hunting into a practical party-building decision: Wade can cover a weakness or fill a role his companions do not provide, but he cannot equip every option at once.

Companion abilities
Characters other than Wade gain abilities through leveling and are customized by choosing which abilities to equip and the order in which to equip them. This gives fixed party members more flexibility than a purely locked-role system while keeping their development distinct from Wade’s relic-based inheritance.
M.O.S. hardware configurations
M.O.S., the party’s automaton, uses a separate customization model. Its parts can be swapped to create different configurations. In practice, Wade is the inheritance-driven generalist, companions are shaped through ability loadouts and M.O.S. is rebuilt through hardware choices.

Designed for traditional JRPG players, with modern controls
Shioda says the team wants to reach players who have strong feelings about JRPGs and experience the depth of Future Sight Battles. The intended foundation remains familiar: exploration, a command menu, party roles and resource management. The modern clarity features are difficulty settings and battle-speed controls, giving players ways to adjust challenge and pacing without removing the underlying tactical structure.
That combination is the clearest answer to the “is it like Chrono Trigger?” question. ETERNAL ANIMA shares an interest in time, turn order and classic JRPG readability, but its signature interaction is forecast manipulation: the player responds to a visible timeline and deliberately changes it.
From PROJECT LIFE is RPG to ETERNAL ANIMA
The project was first shown in 2023 under the label “PROJECT LIFE is RPG.” It received the final ETERNAL ANIMA title in September 2026. Shioda told 4Gamer that the original proposal had been written more than five years before the 2026 interview. The core concept remained, while the battle system and visual presentation changed substantially during development.
Best Value
That long development context helps explain why the game combines a deliberately old-school premise with a battle interface built around prediction and control. The veteran credits are context for the team’s design goals, not evidence that the game continues any earlier franchise.
Release date, platforms and what to verify
Marvelous has announced ETERNAL ANIMA for Nintendo Switch 2, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S and PC via Steam. The announced date is March 4, 2027. Famitsu lists the Steam release at 3:00 a.m. on March 5, so PC players should confirm the time shown for their region on Steam. Storefront editions, language support, reservation availability and regional timing can change before launch.
No published sales, budget, review-score, player-count or performance statistics are established in the pre-release material. Those figures should not be used to judge the game until official or independently documented information exists.

Who should keep ETERNAL ANIMA on a watch list?
- Players who prefer command battles but want more information before committing a turn.
- Fans of timeline manipulation, weakness exploitation and disabling enemies rather than simply out-damaging them.
- JRPG players who enjoy collecting jobs and skills, experimenting with limited loadouts and rebuilding a machine-based party member.
- Anyone interested in a time-travel story that keeps era changes inside a controlled main narrative instead of offering unrestricted paradox creation.
