Thousands of interstellar objects may be hiding in the solar system, but that is a model-based estimate—not a count of confirmed discoveries. In a 2020 American Astronomical Society Division for Dynamical Astronomy abstract, Amir Siraj and Abraham Loeb estimated that thousands of objects roughly the size of ‘Oumuamua could occupy high-inclination, Centaur-like orbits, if interstellar space contains about 1015 such objects per cubic parsec. Their abstract also estimated that the Large Synoptic Survey Telescope could detect several hundred.
What the “thousands” estimate means
The figure comes from a simulation, not a survey that found thousands of objects. Siraj and Loeb’s 2020 estimate depends on an assumed interstellar abundance of approximately 1015 ‘Oumuamua-size objects per cubic parsec. Under that assumption, their simulations suggest that thousands could have been captured into Centaur-like orbits at high inclinations. The authors’ AAS Division for Dynamical Astronomy abstract presents this as a conditional prediction.
“Centaur-like” describes an orbit in the region of the giant planets, while “high inclination” means an orbit tilted substantially relative to the plane in which most planets travel. The proposed orbital pattern is useful because it gives astronomers a way to distinguish potential captured interstellar objects from the much larger population of bodies formed within the solar system. It does not, by itself, confirm an object’s origin.
How astronomers might look for them
Search for unusual orbits
The Siraj–Loeb proposal focuses on orbital characteristics: objects in Centaur-like orbits with high inclinations. A candidate would need follow-up observations to refine its orbit and evaluate whether it fits the predicted population. The abstract’s estimate of several hundred detectable objects is a forecast for the Large Synoptic Survey Telescope (LSST), not a reported discovery total or guaranteed yield.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Why they are hard to see
These bodies are small and can be far from the Sun, making them faint. NASA’s 2019 explanation of interstellar objects said that “most are too faint to be detected with current-day telescopes.” That statement gives context for why a population could escape detection; it is not a current telescope-sensitivity measurement. NASA’s overview of interstellar objects discusses the challenge.
Captured objects are different from visitors passing through
An interstellar visitor is identified as coming from beyond the solar system and then continuing on a path through it. The population proposed by Siraj and Loeb is different: it consists of objects modeled as captured and still orbiting the Sun.

2I/Borisov is a confirmed example of a passing interstellar visitor. NASA reports that the Minor Planet Center and NASA’s Center for Near-Earth Object Studies computed its trajectory and confirmed its interstellar origin. Borisov’s detection demonstrates that objects from outside the solar system can be recognized by their paths; it is not evidence that the modeled captured population has been found. NASA’s 2I/Borisov report describes the confirmation.

‘Oumuamua is also known as an interstellar visitor, but the 2020 estimate uses its approximate size as a reference for the hypothetical population. The estimate does not claim that ‘Oumuamua itself was captured or remains in the solar system.

Why the Oort cloud is not the same population
The Oort cloud is a hypothesized distant reservoir of icy bodies associated with long-period comets. NASA says it has not been directly observed; astronomers infer it as the source of comets whose orbits are disturbed and sent toward the inner solar system. That is distinct from a simulated population of captured interstellar objects in high-inclination, Centaur-like orbits. Oort-cloud estimates therefore should not be treated as counts of interstellar objects. NASA’s Oort cloud explanation outlines the evidence for the cloud.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How firmly established is the estimate?
The “thousands” figure is tied to the assumed interstellar number density and to dynamical simulations. Change the assumed abundance, object size, capture process, or orbital distribution, and the predicted population can change. The 2020 abstract supplies a specific conditional estimate; it does not establish a confirmed inventory. The cited material does not establish whether later work has changed the estimate or produced a current consensus, so the figure should be read as a proposal rather than a settled count.
