A 2011 laboratory study measured how quickly atomic nitrogen reacts with hydroxyl radicals at low temperatures. Its result helped refine a proposed gas-phase route to molecular nitrogen in interstellar clouds—but it did not measure nitrogen abundance in space. The experiment reached 56 K, still warmer than the roughly 10 K conditions cited for dense clouds.

What reaction did the experiment measure?

Julien Daranlot and colleagues studied the barrierless reaction N(⁴S) + OH(²Π) → H(²S) + NO(²Π). The products are hydrogen atoms and nitric oxide (NO). The study focused on the reaction’s kinetics: how it proceeds under controlled laboratory conditions, including at low temperature. PubMed’s record of the study reports that the measured rates agreed with exact and approximate quantum-mechanical calculations.

The result matters to astrochemistry because NO can take part in a further reaction with atomic nitrogen: N + NO → N₂ + O. Together, these reactions provide a proposed gas-phase pathway for forming molecular nitrogen, N₂. The study therefore informs models of how N₂ might form in interstellar clouds; it does not directly determine how much N₂ any particular cloud contains.

How did researchers measure the reaction?

The team used a supersonic-flow reactor with a Laval nozzle to produce cold, rapidly flowing gas. Microwave discharge generated atomic nitrogen, and researchers followed the reaction kinetics using a relative-rate method. In this kind of measurement, the reaction of interest is assessed relative to a reference reaction rather than by directly counting nitrogen molecules in a cloud.

A 2012 NOAA Chemical Sciences Laboratory conference presentation provides broader context on the methods used in this research area, describing CRESU supersonic flow, microwave discharge, pulsed-laser photolysis with laser-induced fluorescence, and relative-rate analysis. It summarizes N + OH and N + CN studies over 56–296 K; that range describes the presentation’s broader set of studies, not just the 2011 N + OH result. NOAA’s conference materials are a methodological overview, not a substitute for the primary study.

What did the low-temperature result change?

The contemporaneous account in Chemistry World described the measured rates as lower than earlier measurements. That difference matters because reaction rates are inputs to chemical models: changing a rate can change how quickly a proposed pathway produces its products and how strongly that pathway contributes relative to others. The reported agreement with quantum calculations gave researchers an independent theoretical comparison for the laboratory result.

The temperature qualification is essential. Chemistry World reported a lowest measurement temperature of 56 K and noted that about 10 K would better represent dense interstellar clouds. The experiment thus probed much colder conditions than ordinary laboratory settings, but it did not reproduce the temperature of the densest clouds exactly. Nor should the broader 56–296 K span in the 2012 NOAA presentation be mistaken for the temperature range of this particular result.

What the experiment can—and cannot—tell us

Evidence What it supports What it does not establish
Low-temperature kinetics for N + OH in a Laval-nozzle reactor How quickly this reaction proceeds under the measured laboratory conditions The abundance of N₂ in a specific interstellar cloud
Rates lower than earlier measurements, as described by Chemistry World in 2011 A reason to reassess the contribution of this route in chemical models That this route is the only, or dominant, source of cloud N₂
Agreement between measurements and exact and approximate quantum calculations, as reported in the study abstract Consistency between the measured kinetics and those calculations Direct confirmation of the full chemical pathway in space

A model must combine reaction kinetics with the cloud’s physical conditions and the other chemical processes included in that model. A laboratory rate can constrain one part of that calculation; it is not itself an astronomical abundance measurement. The study abstract states that the findings provide insight into gas-phase mechanisms for molecular-nitrogen formation in interstellar clouds, a claim about informing mechanisms rather than directly observing cloud composition.

How to read the temperatures and dates

  • 56 K: the low-temperature N + OH measurement reported by Chemistry World in 2011.
  • About 10 K: the temperature Ian Smith cited in that contemporaneous account as more representative of dense interstellar clouds.
  • 56–296 K: the range covered by the NOAA Chemical Sciences Laboratory’s 2012 presentation of N + OH and N + CN studies together; it is not a single N + OH measurement range.

The study was published on 16 December 2011 in Science, volume 334, issue 6062, pages 1538–1541 (DOI: 10.1126/science.1213789). It is best understood as an experiment that strengthened the kinetic evidence available to astrochemical models, not as a new direct survey of interstellar nitrogen.
