To find out whether your home internet plan is good value, compare your latest bill with the plan’s broadband label and the providers reporting service at your exact address. The bill shows what you pay; the label explains the plan’s pricing and terms; the FCC National Broadband Map helps identify alternatives. No single advertised price or speed tells the whole story.

1. Find your real monthly internet cost

Start with your latest bill. Separate the recurring internet charge from one-time charges, taxes, fees, and any bundled services. If the bill combines internet with services your household does not use, identify those amounts rather than treating the entire bundle as the internet price.

Check whether the current amount reflects a promotion or discount, and note when any introductory rate ends. A bill is a snapshot; it may not show what the service will cost over the next year.

2. Read the broadband label for your plan

Look for the label for the specific plan and compare its listed retail monthly price with your bill. The Federal Communications Commission created broadband labels to help consumers compare services. The FCC’s 2022 order calls for information including pricing, introductory rates, data allowances, performance metrics, and contract information. TP-Link AX1800 WiFi 6 Router (Archer AX21 V5)
  • DUAL-BAND WIFI 6 ROUTER: Wi-Fi 6(802.11ax) technology achieves faster speeds, greater capacity and reduced network congestion compared to the previous gen. All WiFi routers require a separate modem. Dual-Band WiFi routers do not support the 6 GHz band.
  • AX1800: Enjoy smoother and more stable streaming, gaming, downloading with 1.8 Gbps total bandwidth (up to 1200 Mbps on 5 GHz and up to 574 Mbps on 2.4 GHz). Performance varies by conditions, distance to devices, and obstacles such as walls.
  • CONNECT MORE DEVICES: Wi-Fi 6 technology communicates more data to more devices simultaneously using revolutionary OFDMA technology
  • EXTENSIVE COVERAGE: Achieve the strong, reliable WiFi coverage with Archer AX1800 as it focuses signal strength to your devices far away using Beamforming technology, 4 high-gain antennas and an advanced front-end module (FEM) chipset
  • OUR CYBERSECURITY COMMITMENT: TP-Link is a signatory of the U.S. Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency’s (CISA) Secure-by-Design pledge. This device is designed, built, and maintained, with advanced security as a core requirement.

The label’s retail price may differ from the amount you pay: the FCC’s 2022 order describes retail price as the price before discounts such as autopay or paperless billing. Check the introductory price and what follows it, the conditions for discounts, the contract term, and the service characteristics. Ask the provider which variable fees and discounts apply to your account and location. The FCC’s 2026 order permits simplified disclosure of variable fees in some circumstances, so do not assume a label presents every applicable fee in the same way.

Label presentation rules have changed. The FCC’s 2026 order permits more conversational verbal presentation over the phone, simplified treatment of variable fees in some cases, hyperlinks or icons at point of sale and in account portals, and removes the machine-readable database and label-archiving requirements. It also removes outdated Affordable Connectivity Program information. A full label may therefore not appear in the same format at every interaction; check the current plan information and confirm account-specific terms with the provider.

3. Check what is available at your address

Enter your exact service address in the FCC National Broadband Map. Review the providers reporting service, the listed technologies, and maximum advertised speeds. The map’s availability information is reported by internet service providers, so use it to build a shortlist, not as a guarantee that a provider can install service or deliver a particular household experience. The FCC explains address searches and how to challenge inaccurate availability information in its National Broadband Map help article, updated May 15, 2025.

If the map shows a provider that interests you, verify availability and the offer directly with that provider for your address. The map’s maximum advertised speed is not a promise of the speed your household will experience.

4. Compare the full cost and how well each plan fits

For each available plan, compare the price you would actually pay now and after any promotion, along with the terms that could change the total cost. A faster plan is not automatically better value if your household does not need the extra speed.

What to compare What to check
Price over time Recurring amount now, promotional duration, and price after the promotion.
Discounts Eligibility, conditions, and whether discounts such as autopay or paperless billing are reflected in the price.
Fees and commitment Applicable fees for your account and location, contract term, and any switching costs disclosed by the provider.
Service Technology and advertised download and upload performance, considered against your household’s actual use.
Availability Whether the provider confirms it can serve your exact address.

Use the bill and label together for the cost comparison: the bill shows your current charges, while the label and provider’s account-specific terms help explain the price, discounts, and service. Compare the cost for the period that matters to you rather than choosing solely by the first advertised monthly rate.

5. Follow up on a charge or rate that looks wrong

Contact the provider about a rate, fee, or discount you cannot reconcile. Keep the bill and the plan terms so you can identify the specific charge and explain what you expected to pay. The FCC lists advertised rates, service charges, taxes, fees, and surcharges among its internet billing complaint topics. If the provider does not resolve the issue, consult the FCC’s internet complaint information for guidance on filing a complaint.

Do not count on the former ACP discount

The Affordable Connectivity Program ended June 1, 2024, because Congress did not provide additional funding. It is not a discount a household can newly claim. USAC says the former benefit was up to $30 per month for eligible consumers and up to $75 per month on qualifying Tribal lands; participating providers also offered a one-time device discount of up to $100. Those are historical program benefits, not current offers. The FCC has warned that some websites continue to advertise ACP benefits or collect personal information through purported enrollment. Check the USAC ACP information and the FCC ACP advisory before sharing information with a site making such claims.
