An Internet Media Tablet (IMT) was a tablet-style portable computer designed around internet access and media use. The label is most closely associated with ARCHOS devices such as the ARCHOS 5, but it was a period product category rather than a modern technical standard.
What is an Internet Media Tablet?
A 2011 industry overview in a Hong Kong securities filing calls an Internet Media Tablet “a type of tablet PC.” It describes tablet PCs of the period as small, thin computers with many features of a full-size personal computer, usually operated by touchscreen and without an attached keyboard. That is a historical description, not a formal definition that should be applied as a current standard. Source
In practical terms, an IMT was a tablet-like portable computer emphasizing web access alongside media and entertainment. ARCHOS used the phrase for handheld products combining browsing, email, media playback, and TV-related features. Those were vendor-specific examples, not requirements shared by every device that used the label.

These examples show why “Internet Media Tablet” was useful as a product description: it pointed to a portable, screen-centered device bringing online functions and media playback together. It does not establish that all IMTs had the same operating system, connectivity, storage, keyboard arrangement, or feature set.
How is an Internet tablet different from a tablet PC?
The terms were not used with a stable, universally observed boundary. The filing places Internet Media Tablet within the broader tablet PC category, while period technology reporting notes that “smartbook,” “Internet tablet,” “Internet media tablet,” “pocket PC,” and “Ultramobile PC” were sometimes used interchangeably with “MID” (mobile Internet device). A helpful reading of old product descriptions is therefore practical rather than taxonomic: “tablet PC” could describe the broader tablet-style computer form, while “Internet Media Tablet” stressed internet access and entertainment. Contemporary sources used overlapping labels, so a product’s actual features are more reliable than the name alone.
What was the ARCHOS 5 Internet Media Tablet?
The ARCHOS 5 was a handheld device marketed as part of ARCHOS’s Internet Media Tablet line. The company framed it as a way to access internet, media, and TV on a portable screen. It is a representative historical example of the term, not a template for every device classified as an IMT.

Should you call a modern tablet an Internet Media Tablet?
Not by default. A present-day tablet may provide internet access and media playback, but those shared capabilities do not make “Internet Media Tablet” its current category name. Use the phrase when discussing the historical label or a product that was marketed under it, and describe current devices using their established product category or specific features.
