Internet Information Services (IIS) is Microsoft’s built-in web server role for Windows. It hosts websites, web applications, and services on public, private, or organizational networks. IIS is software included with Windows—not a web browser, internet provider, domain registrar, or separate cloud hosting service.
What Internet Information Services is used for
IIS receives requests for sites and applications hosted on a Windows computer, then serves content or passes requests through configured processing components. Organizations use it for public websites, internal intranet sites, web applications, and web services. Windows Server documentation also describes sharing information over an extranet.
Administrators can configure multiple sites with their own bindings and settings, and assign sites or applications to application pools. The exact features available depend on the Windows version and edition.
How IIS works
Modules handle request-processing tasks
IIS 7 and later use a modular design: administrators enable components for the functions a server or application needs. Modules can handle tasks such as authentication, caching, logging, security, and customized content processing. Microsoft describes the IIS 7-and-later feature set as more than 30 independent modules.
#1 Best Overall
Choosing only needed features can reduce the code running as requests are processed, memory use, and the server’s attack surface. Module availability and configuration vary by Windows release, so consult documentation for the version in use.
Application pools separate workloads
An application pool groups settings for one or more worker processes serving assigned sites, applications, or services. Separate pools provide process boundaries, helping isolate an application’s workload from applications in other pools. Pool count and worker-process settings should be planned around the server’s capacity.

Windows Process Activation Service manages processes
In IIS 7 and later, Windows Process Activation Service (WAS) manages application-pool configuration and worker processes. It provides the HTTP process activation model used by IIS; this is primarily an administrative detail rather than a separate hosting product.
Where IIS fits in Windows
IIS is a Windows Server role and a web server feature available on Windows Server and Windows Client. It is not a cross-platform server product. For example, Microsoft’s Web Server (IIS) installation guidance covers Windows Server 2025, 2022, 2019, and 2016, while the role services and features available can differ by release and edition. Check the documentation for the specific Windows version before following installation or configuration steps.

Learning to administer IIS
Microsoft Learn offers an IIS administration training path covering topics such as installation, security, backup, logging, and monitoring. For installation details, see Microsoft’s Web Server (IIS) installation guidance. For architecture, consult the IIS Web Server Overview, Application Pools documentation, and IIS Modules Overview.
