An internet access router forwards IP traffic between a local network and an upstream network that provides internet connectivity. “Access” describes its position at the network edge; it does not identify a separate routing protocol or mean the device must include Wi-Fi or a modem.

What is an internet access router?

It is an IP router used to connect a local or subscriber network to a provider or other upstream network. The router examines IP packet headers and uses routing information to decide where to send traffic next. For an IPv4 router, the IETF’s RFC 1812, Requirements for IP Version 4 Routers, describes this forwarding role and the use of a routing database to select a next hop and interface.

“Access” refers to the router’s role at the edge of a network. It does not mean every such router is a home wireless router: access routers can serve subscribers, businesses, or provider networks. Hewlett Packard Enterprise uses the term for routers that connect subscribers to provider networks for internet or private-network access; that is a vendor explanation of the role, not a separate technical standard.

How it differs from a modem, switch, access point, and gateway

Device or term Main function How it relates to an internet access router
Router Forwards IP traffic between networks using destination addresses and routing information. This is the defining function of an internet access router.
Modem or ONT Terminates a broadband service or access medium, such as a cable, DSL, or fiber connection. It may be a separate device before the router, or its function may be integrated into a gateway. It is not the same function as routing.
Ethernet switch Typically forwards link-layer frames among devices on a local Ethernet segment. A router or gateway may include a switch, but local frame switching is not what defines a router.
Wireless access point Connects Wi-Fi devices to a local network over radio. A wireless router product often combines an access point with routing and Ethernet switching; Wi-Fi is not required for a device to be a router.
Gateway A broad term for an entry point between networks or systems. In consumer broadband, it often means a combined modem or ONT, router, switch, and Wi-Fi device. Check which functions the specific product includes.

NIST’s router glossary entry likewise describes a router as a layer-3 gateway that relays and directs packets between networks. In practice, product names can blur these distinctions because one enclosure may perform several jobs.

TP-Link AX1800 WiFi 6 Router (Archer AX21 V5)
  • DUAL-BAND WIFI 6 ROUTER: Wi-Fi 6(802.11ax) technology achieves faster speeds, greater capacity and reduced network congestion compared to the previous gen. All WiFi routers require a separate modem. Dual-Band WiFi routers do not support the 6 GHz band.
  • AX1800: Enjoy smoother and more stable streaming, gaming, downloading with 1.8 Gbps total bandwidth (up to 1200 Mbps on 5 GHz and up to 574 Mbps on 2.4 GHz). Performance varies by conditions, distance to devices, and obstacles such as walls.
  • CONNECT MORE DEVICES: Wi-Fi 6 technology communicates more data to more devices simultaneously using revolutionary OFDMA technology
  • EXTENSIVE COVERAGE: Achieve the strong, reliable WiFi coverage with Archer AX1800 as it focuses signal strength to your devices far away using Beamforming technology, 4 high-gain antennas and an advanced front-end module (FEM) chipset
  • OUR CYBERSECURITY COMMITMENT: TP-Link is a signatory of the U.S. Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency’s (CISA) Secure-by-Design pledge. This device is designed, built, and maintained, with advanced security as a core requirement.

What happens when traffic leaves your network?

  1. A device on the local network sends an IP packet toward a destination outside that network.
  2. The router consults its routing information to choose a next hop and the interface through which to send the packet.
  3. The packet passes toward the upstream provider network, often through a separate modem or ONT if the broadband service requires one.

RFC 1812 is specifically an IPv4 router requirements document, so it is useful for understanding the core routing role but should not be treated as a complete specification of all contemporary IPv6 router behavior.

What to check when choosing or setting up one

Start with the internet service’s handoff and equipment requirements. The right setup might be a separate router and modem or ONT, a router connected to an Ethernet WAN handoff, or an integrated gateway. There is no single arrangement that fits every ISP.

  • Connection handoff: Confirm whether the provider supplies cable, DSL, fiber through an ONT, cellular service, or an Ethernet WAN connection.
  • Separate or integrated equipment: Find out whether broadband termination is already provided or whether the router must connect to a separate modem or ONT.
  • Functions needed: Decide whether you need routing alone or a combined device with Wi-Fi, Ethernet switching, firewall features, or other gateway functions.
  • Local network needs: Consider wired port count, Wi-Fi coverage, client devices, and where the equipment can be placed.
  • Compatibility and control: Check the provider’s requirements, supported operating modes, and whether you can manage the device yourself.

These checks help identify the appropriate equipment category; they do not establish that any particular model will work with a given service.
