The International Telecommunication Union (ITU) is the United Nations specialized agency for information and communication technologies. It helps governments and other members coordinate radio spectrum and satellite-orbit use, develop international technical standards, and expand access to digital technologies. It does not sell phone or internet service.
What does ITU stand for?
ITU stands for International Telecommunication Union. It is an intergovernmental organization and a UN specialized agency focused on information and communication technologies (ICTs). The name is sometimes written with “Telecommunications” in the plural, but the organization’s official name is “International Telecommunication Union.”
The ITU provides a multilateral forum for countries and other participants to coordinate issues that cross borders. Its work supports international connectivity by coordinating shared resources, developing technical standards, and assisting with ICT development.

What does the ITU do?
The ITU’s work is divided among three sectors, each addressing a different coordination need:

These functions complement one another: coordination helps countries manage shared radio resources, standards support interoperability, and development work aims to improve access and capacity.
Is the ITU part of the United Nations?
Yes. The ITU is a UN specialized agency. A special agreement formally recognizing that relationship came into force on 1 January 1949. The ITU itself traces its origins to 1865, predating the United Nations.

Who belongs to the ITU?
The ITU’s current About page reports 194 Member States and more than 1,000 companies, universities, and international and regional organizations. These are membership figures reported by the organization, not a count of every person who participates in its work. Older ITU material may show lower totals because it has not been updated to match the current overview.

No. The ITU is not a telecom operator or consumer internet provider. It does not sell phone plans or connect individual homes. Instead, it provides a forum for countries and sector participants to coordinate resources and standards, and it supports ICT development.

Are ITU standards legally binding?
Do not assume that every ITU standard automatically becomes law in every country. The ITU develops international technical standards, but the organization’s role as a standards body does not by itself make every standard legally binding on all governments or companies.
