An interior gateway protocol (IGP) is a routing protocol that distributes routing information among routers within one autonomous system (AS). It describes a protocol’s role and scope—not one particular protocol or routing algorithm.

What an IGP does

Routers use routing information to determine where to send network traffic. An IGP enables routers inside the same AS to exchange that information. RFC 1812, section 7.2.1, defines an IGP as a protocol used to distribute routing information “between the various routers in a particular AS.”

An AS is the routing-domain boundary that gives “interior” its meaning here. An IGP operates within that boundary; the term does not specify a particular vendor, protocol implementation, or method for calculating routes.

How an IGP differs from BGP

IGP and BGP are not interchangeable names. They describe routing at different scopes: an IGP distributes routing information within an AS, while RFC 1812 identifies BGP-4 as an inter-AS routing protocol. In other words, the distinction is about where the routing information is exchanged, not simply which protocol is newer or more capable.

TP-Link AX1800 WiFi 6 Router (Archer AX21 V5)
  • DUAL-BAND WIFI 6 ROUTER: Wi-Fi 6(802.11ax) technology achieves faster speeds, greater capacity and reduced network congestion compared to the previous gen. All WiFi routers require a separate modem. Dual-Band WiFi routers do not support the 6 GHz band.
  • AX1800: Enjoy smoother and more stable streaming, gaming, downloading with 1.8 Gbps total bandwidth (up to 1200 Mbps on 5 GHz and up to 574 Mbps on 2.4 GHz). Performance varies by conditions, distance to devices, and obstacles such as walls.
  • CONNECT MORE DEVICES: Wi-Fi 6 technology communicates more data to more devices simultaneously using revolutionary OFDMA technology
  • EXTENSIVE COVERAGE: Achieve the strong, reliable WiFi coverage with Archer AX1800 as it focuses signal strength to your devices far away using Beamforming technology, 4 high-gain antennas and an advanced front-end module (FEM) chipset
  • OUR CYBERSECURITY COMMITMENT: TP-Link is a signatory of the U.S. Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency’s (CISA) Secure-by-Design pledge. This device is designed, built, and maintained, with advanced security as a core requirement.

Examples of interior gateway protocols

OSPF, IS-IS, and RIP are examples of IGPs. They share the within-an-AS role, but use different routing approaches.

Protocol Algorithm family Metric or calculation
OSPF Link-state Not stated in the cited source notes
IS-IS Link-state Uses shortest-path-first calculations
RIP Distance-vector Uses hop count

These categories describe how protocols approach route information; they do not change the basic definition of an IGP. The table’s classifications and details are supported by the cited protocol overviews; a specific metric for OSPF is not established in those source notes.

TP-Link AC1200 WiFi Router Dual Band Wireless Internet Router (Archer A54)
  • Dual-band Wi-Fi with 5 GHz speeds up to 867 Mbps and 2.4 GHz speeds up to 300 Mbps, delivering 1200 Mbps of total bandwidth¹. Dual-band routers do not support 6 GHz. Performance varies by conditions, distance to devices, and obstacles such as walls.
  • Covers up to 1,000 sq. ft. with four external antennas for stable wireless connections and optimal coverage.
  • Supports IGMP Proxy/Snooping, Bridge and Tag VLAN to optimize IPTV streaming
  • Access Point Mode - Supports AP Mode to transform your wired connection into wireless network, an ideal wireless router for home
  • Advanced Security with WPA3 - The latest Wi-Fi security protocol, WPA3, brings new capabilities to improve cybersecurity in personal networks

OSPF and IS-IS

OSPF and IS-IS are link-state IGPs. IS-IS uses shortest-path-first calculations to determine routes. IS-IS also has an IP extension described in RFC 1195, as noted in Cisco’s IOS XE IS-IS documentation.

RIP

RIP is a distance-vector IGP whose metric is hop count. That makes it a straightforward example of how an IGP can use a particular measure when evaluating routes.

TP-Link AC1200 Gigabit Dual Band WiFi Router (Archer A6)
  • Dual band router upgrades to 1200 Mbps high speed internet (300mbps for 2.4GHz plus 900Mbps for 5GHz), reducing buffering and ideal for 4K stream
  • Full Gigabit Ports - Gigabit Router with 4 Gigabit LAN ports, ideal for any internet plan and allow you to directly connect your wired devices
  • Boosted Coverage - Four external antennas equipped with Beamforming technology extend and concentrate the Wi-Fi signals
  • MU-MIMO technology - (5GHz band) allows high speeds for multiple devices simultaneously
  • Access Point Mode - Supports AP Mode to transform your wired connection into wireless network, an ideal wireless router for home

IGRP

IGRP is another example found in Cisco’s documentation, which describes it as an IGP. It is best understood here as a historical, vendor-developed example rather than as a claim about the default choice for contemporary networks.

Does “IGP” mean one specific protocol?

No. IGP is the category: it identifies protocols used to exchange routing information within an AS. OSPF, IS-IS, and RIP are individual examples in that category. Their algorithm families and route metrics differ, so the definition alone does not tell you which protocol a network uses.

How to think about IGP selection

There is no universally best IGP established by these definitions and protocol overviews. A network’s requirements and implementation context determine which protocol is appropriate. The useful first distinction is scope: identify whether the routing exchange is within an AS or between ASes. For an interior-routing question, then compare the relevant protocols by their algorithm family and route-calculation approach.
