A GIF can grow dramatically after re-encoding if the new file stores full frames instead of compact updates to only the pixels that changed. Animation-aware optimization can restore that compact structure, but it does not guarantee a smaller file. The reported 4.5× increase is a case-specific result, not a verified general benchmark; confirm it against the actual before-and-after files.
Why can re-encoding make a GIF larger?
An animated GIF does not have to store a complete canvas for every frame. It can store a smaller image rectangle that updates only part of the displayed animation. If an encoder instead writes more of the canvas into each frame, the result may contain substantially more image data than the original.
This is one plausible explanation for a larger re-encoded GIF, not a diagnosis of any particular file. To establish why a file grew, compare the original and output, including frame rectangles, palettes, disposal values, and encoder settings.
How interframe differencing reduces frame data
Interframe differencing represents a frame by the region that changed from the preceding displayed frame, rather than repeating unchanged pixels across the full canvas. Gifsicle describes this approach as storing only the changed portion of each image. Its manual documents three optimization levels:

ImageMagick likewise describes optimizing animations with smaller sub-image overlays in its animation optimization guide. Fewer stored pixels can mean less encoded data, but each frame’s appearance depends on what remains on the canvas and how the prior frame is handled.
Why frame disposal matters
Disposal tells a viewer what to do with a frame before the next frame is displayed. Depending on that behavior, the next frame may be drawn over what is already visible or after some or all of the previous frame is cleared. An optimized partial-frame sequence must preserve the intended result; otherwise, areas can appear stale, disappear unexpectedly, or show visual glitches.

ImageMagick’s animation basics explains disposal behavior and notes that disposal choices affect the overlays needed for an animation. It also says the traditional approach of coalescing an animation and then deconstructing it is no longer recommended, pointing instead to its general GIF optimizer. Avoid treating an old deconstruct-after-coalesce recipe as the preferred current method.

- Keep the original. Make a copy before processing, and record the original file’s byte size.
- Use an animation-aware optimizer. For Gifsicle, test its documented optimization levels, starting with
gifsicle -O1 input.gif -o output.gif; try-O2or-O3if needed. The Gifsicle manual describes the levels and their trade-offs. - Record the result. Compare the output’s byte size with the original. If the output is larger, try another setting or encoder rather than assuming optimization must reduce it.
- Check playback, not just size. Watch the full animation, including transitions and the loop boundary. Check that frames look correct and that timing and looping remain as intended.
- Make a result reproducible. Record the tool and version, command or export settings, and before-and-after sizes.
Why optimization may still increase file size
Re-encoding is not guaranteed to shrink a GIF. Gifsicle explicitly warns that optimization can fail to reduce size and that, in rare cases, even -O3 can enlarge the file. Higher optimization levels may also take longer. A smaller frame representation is only one part of the encoding; the encoder’s choices and the animation’s content affect the outcome.

Compare candidate outputs on four measures: byte size, visual fidelity and disposal behavior, playback timing and looping, and the time or complexity required to produce them. Keep the version that meets the file-size goal without breaking the animation.
