If you want interactive websites without writing JavaScript, htmx is a practical starting point for common interactions backed by a server: HTML attributes trigger requests, and the server sends back HTML to place on the page. But htmx is itself a JavaScript library, so it does not make a browser run with no JavaScript. For a small local show-and-hide control, plain HTML and CSS may be simpler; for a self-contained feature with richer behavior, a focused client-side component may fit better.

What “without JavaScript” can mean

The phrase covers two different goals: avoiding custom JavaScript code, or ensuring that no JavaScript executes in the browser. htmx helps with the first, not the second. It is a client-side JavaScript library that lets developers describe common HTTP requests and page updates with HTML attributes. If JavaScript is disabled, htmx-driven interactions will not work.

The practical benefit is less custom client-side request and DOM-update code. Instead, the server handles an interaction and returns HTML—often a fragment—that htmx swaps into the page. The htmx documentation describes that response model and the library’s request and swap behavior.

When htmx is a good fit

htmx suits conventional server-rendered sites where an interaction can be expressed as a request to the application and a returned HTML update. For example, a control might submit a form, and the server could return updated results or a validation message for a section of the page.

In simplified terms, an element can use an attribute such as hx-post to send a POST request. The server processes it and returns HTML; htmx then inserts that response into a chosen target. The official documentation lists request attributes for GET, POST, PUT, PATCH, and DELETE. The exact endpoint, response markup, target, and swap behavior depend on the application.

This shifts work rather than removing it. You need server endpoints that return appropriate HTML, plus working knowledge of HTML, CSS, a programming language, and HTTP basics. htmx can reduce custom client-side scripting, but it does not remove the need to build and understand the backend.

Choose the simplest tool that fits the interaction

What you need Reasonable starting point What to expect
Show or hide a small disclosure or panel Native HTML and CSS Few moving parts; suitable only for behavior the browser’s built-in controls and CSS can express.
Fetch server-rendered content and replace part of a page htmx HTML attributes describe requests and targets; the server must return usable HTML, and the browser runs htmx’s JavaScript.
Declarative local behavior written in markup hyperscript Behavior can live on the element it affects and can integrate with htmx, but the syntax takes some getting used to.
A highly interactive, self-contained feature A web component or focused framework component Keep the surrounding page server-rendered while using JavaScript for the feature that benefits from richer client-side behavior.

Use HTML and CSS for a simple local toggle

If a control only needs to reveal or hide nearby content, a network request may be unnecessary. The htmx project demonstrates a checkbox-and-CSS pattern that presents a checkbox as a button and uses its checked state to show content. This approach can avoid both htmx and custom scripting for that narrow case.

Use a native disclosure control where it meets the design and accessibility needs. CSS-only patterns can be useful, but they are not a general substitute for application logic: they cannot fetch fresh server data or implement every interaction that a script can.

When to add a small client-side tool

For behavior embedded in markup

hyperscript is an option when you want to describe local behavior on the element it affects. Its Getting Started documentation shows a click example and describes installation through a script tag or npm; it also describes integration with htmx. The project cautions that the syntax takes some getting used to, so it should not be treated as effortless or as a no-JavaScript solution.

For a feature with more client-side state

A web component or a focused component from a JavaScript framework may be more appropriate when a feature has substantial local state or intricate, immediate interactions. The rest of the page can remain server-rendered. The htmx project likewise notes that developers use JavaScript, Alpine, or hyperscript where appropriate; using htmx does not require every action to happen on the server. See the project’s discussion, “You Can’t Build Interactive Web Apps Except as Single Page Applications… And Other Myths”.

  • A handy two-book set that uniquely combines related technologies Highly visual format and accessible language makes these books highly effective learning tools Perfect for beginning web designers and front-end developers

How to decide

  • Is the interaction local and simple? Start with a native control or HTML and CSS if that can express the behavior accessibly.
  • Does it need current data or a server-side action? Consider htmx if the server can return the HTML that should appear.
  • Does it need richer local behavior? Add a focused client-side tool or component rather than forcing every interaction through the server.
  • What do you already know? htmx is most approachable when you are comfortable building server-rendered pages and endpoints. A tool that reduces one kind of code may add unfamiliar concepts elsewhere.

There is no comparative study in the cited project materials establishing one approach as easiest for every developer. Ease depends on the interaction, the developer’s existing skills, and how much work is simpler on the server versus in the browser.

Where to start learning htmx

The official htmx documentation is the direct starting point for installation, request attributes, targets, and response swapping. Its page displayed htmx 2.0.11 installation instructions when checked on October 7, 2026; verify the current version and installation guidance before adding it to a project, since those details can change.

For a longer introduction, the htmx project also announces the Hypermedia Systems book, about building hypermedia-driven applications with htmx and related ideas. It is optional; the documentation is enough to begin exploring the request-and-HTML-response model.
