The right interactive chart tool depends on where the chart will live, who needs to view it, and whether the work is a one-off graphic or a managed reporting system. For published charts and maps, start with Datawrapper or Flourish; for code-led work, consider Plotly or Observable; for organization-wide analytics, compare Tableau Cloud with Power BI. Google Data Studio is a no-cost route for lightweight reports, while Canva Graph Maker is geared toward visual presentation. The important catch: a free chart maker may still charge for private viewers, collaboration, branding controls, compute, or large-scale use.

How to choose an interactive chart maker

First decide what you are publishing: an embeddable chart, a visual story, a dashboard, a notebook, a web app, or a presentation graphic. Then check the authoring workflow, data sources and refresh needs, audience access, and the complete cost of publishing to that audience. A gallery of chart types alone does not tell you whether a tool suits your workflow.

  • Output: Is the deliverable an embed, dashboard, notebook, app, or presentation graphic?
  • Authoring: Do you need point-and-click controls, spreadsheet-connected editing, or code?
  • Data workflow: Check connectors, preparation tools, refresh behavior, and whether separate hosting or infrastructure is needed.
  • Audience: Identify public and private viewers, paid viewer seats, role controls, embed restrictions, and attribution.
  • Portability: Confirm available exports, live-update options, self-hosting, and what happens if your plan changes.
  • Cost model: Look for creator/editor seats, viewer seats, annual commitments, compute, credits, API operations, capacity, taxes, and sales-quoted terms.

Prices and plan details below are vendor-listed figures checked October 7, 2026, not independent benchmarks. Plans can change; confirm current terms, currency, eligibility, and tax treatment before buying.

Eight interactive chart tools and what they cost

Tool Best fit Costs and limits to check
Datawrapper Embeddable charts, maps, and tables for published storytelling. The free plan includes publishing and PNG export. Pro and Business add features such as attribution removal, PDF/SVG export, extended edit history, or additional chart types. Listed prices are in USD and exclude VAT. API operations have separate charges effective October 1, 2026. Datawrapper pricing
Flourish Interactive charts, maps, stories, and presentation-oriented graphics. The free plan includes templates and public publishing with attribution. Unbranded embeds, live data updates, and HTML export depend on tier; Publisher and Enterprise features require contacting the vendor. Presenter is available through Canva Business or Enterprise. Flourish pricing
Plotly Python-backed interactive apps and Dash publishing for technically oriented users. The free offer includes a one-time 10-credit trial, one app, and three private viewers. Pro is listed at $29 per Creator per month or $290 annually, with 30 monthly credits. Additional private viewers are $10 each per month and extra credits are $1 each. Credits cover Studio AI actions and cloud computing; when exhausted, credit-powered features stop, while published apps keep running. Plotly pricing
Tableau Cloud Organizational dashboards, data exploration, role-based collaboration, and governance. Standard annual pricing lists Creator at $75, Explorer at $42, and Viewer at $15 per user per month. Enterprise lists Creator at $115, Explorer at $70, and Viewer at $35 per user per month. Every deployment needs at least one Creator. Capacity-based Viewer pricing is an alternative to role-based Viewer licensing; the two cannot be mixed in one tenant. Cloud+ is sales-priced. Tableau Cloud pricing
Microsoft Power BI Interactive reports in Microsoft-centric business intelligence workflows. A free account supports authoring but requires an upgrade to share reports. Microsoft lists Pro at $14 per user per month and Premium Per User at $24 per user per month, paid yearly; Embedded pricing varies. Confirm local currency, eligibility, and licensing requirements. Power BI pricing
Observable Interactive notebooks, data exploration, and team authoring or embedding for code-capable users. Pro is listed at $22 per month with annual billing or $25 billed monthly. Team is $40 per editor per month with annual billing or $45 billed monthly; private viewers cost $10 per viewer per month. Pro and Team list 50 minutes of monthly compute per person or editor, so check whether that allowance suits your usage. Observable pricing
Google Data Studio No-cost drag-and-drop reports, ad hoc analytics, interactive dashboards, and web embedding—particularly for one-off reports or single and pre-aggregated data sources. Google documentation describes Data Studio as a no-cost product and says it connects to more than 1,000 data sources; that figure is Google’s own product documentation, not an independent benchmark. Data Studio Pro adds enterprise capabilities and technical support. It is distinct from the separately paid Looker BI platform. Google Data Studio comparison
Canva Graph Maker Quick graph design and visual presentation. Do not assume its graph maker provides the same publishing or developer workflow as chart-specific platforms. Flourish Presenter, which can embed interactive Flourish charts in designs and PowerPoint, requires Canva Business or Enterprise. Canva Graph Maker · Flourish pricing

Where “free” can stop being free

Publishing, privacy, and branding

A free tier may let you create a chart but limit who can see it, whether it can be shared privately, or whether vendor attribution appears. Datawrapper’s free plan includes publishing and PNG export, while Flourish’s free publishing carries attribution. Power BI’s free account supports authoring, but sharing reports requires an upgrade. Check the precise plan for public and private sharing, embeds, branding, and export formats such as PNG, SVG, PDF, or HTML.

People who create versus people who view

Count creators and editors separately from casual viewers. Tableau requires at least one Creator in a deployment and offers role-based or capacity-based Viewer pricing, with restrictions on combining those models in one tenant. Observable lists per-editor pricing for teams and a separate private-viewer charge. Plotly also lists a charge for each additional private viewer. For Power BI, confirm the licenses required for both authors and report consumers under your intended sharing setup.

Usage caps and metered work

Plotly’s Pro credit allowance is 30 credits per month; additional credits cost $1 each, and private viewers beyond the included allowance cost $10 each per month. Observable lists 50 minutes of monthly compute per person or editor for Pro and Team, plus a separate team private-viewer fee. Datawrapper’s API uses operation-based charges, with the vendor’s listed pricing taking effect October 1, 2026. Estimate actual usage rather than treating an entry plan as unlimited.

Annual commitments, capacity, and quoted plans

Some listed per-user rates require annual billing. Tableau’s Standard and Enterprise prices are annual-contract rates, while its Cloud+ tier is sales-priced. Flourish Publisher and Enterprise features also require a vendor conversation. Google’s paid Looker platform has its own user licensing and sales pricing; it should not be conflated with no-cost Data Studio. A custom quote is an unknown until the scope is clear: compare included users, capacity, support, hosting, and contract terms rather than guessing a per-seat equivalent. Looker pricing

Infrastructure, taxes, and the rest of the bill

Depending on the workflow, the plan price may not include everything needed to operate a reporting system. Check whether you must budget separately for hosting, cloud capacity, data connectors, refresh infrastructure, custom domains, support, SSO, governance, or self-hosting. Datawrapper explicitly states its listed prices exclude VAT. Confirm the price currency, billing cadence, tax treatment, and any minimum role requirements before comparing annual totals.

Match the tool to the job

For a chart or map embedded in a published story

Begin with Datawrapper or Flourish. Compare the exact publishing and embed terms, attribution, exports, and whether you need live updates. Datawrapper’s free tier includes publishing and PNG export; Flourish’s free tier includes public publishing with attribution.

For code-led charts, notebooks, or apps

Plotly is aimed at Python-backed interactive apps and Dash publishing; Observable is built around interactive notebooks, exploration, and collaborative authoring or embedding. Compare technical fit with viewer charges and usage meters: a technically flexible workflow can still have separate costs for private access or compute.

Rank #4
NOAA BookletChart 11467: Intracoastal Waterway West Palm Beach to Miami
  • An alternative to large, full scale charts which may too big to manage, especially on the water in a small vessel.
  • Exact replica of the full scale version of the corresponding NOAA Chart 11467, just printed in smaller scale and offered in a booklet form.
  • Your Booklet chart will be printed on demand for your order and will include all updates at the time of printing.
  • Printed on high-quality durable paper with stapled (saddle-stitched) binding.
  • Handy 8.5 x 11 inch size. Page count varies depending on the chart.

For governed organizational reporting

Tableau Cloud and Power BI are the relevant choices in this shortlist. Tableau’s Creator, Explorer, and Viewer roles make audience licensing explicit, while Power BI fits Microsoft-centered reporting. Model the complete sharing arrangement—including authors and consumers—rather than comparing only an authoring seat.

For lightweight reports or presentation graphics

Google Data Studio suits no-cost, drag-and-drop reporting and interactive dashboards, especially for ad hoc use or prepared data. Canva Graph Maker is a visual-design route; if you want interactive Flourish charts inside Canva designs or PowerPoint, confirm that your Canva plan qualifies for Presenter.

How to estimate the real cost before you commit

  1. Write down the deliverable: specify whether you need a public embed, private dashboard, app, notebook, or presentation, plus the needed exports and update frequency.
  2. Count each role: list creators, editors, and viewers separately, and identify which viewers need private access.
  3. Apply plan minimums: include required Creator roles, annual billing, viewer seats, or capacity pricing in the total. Do not multiply a starting rate without checking the minimum and licensing model.
  4. Estimate meters: forecast credits, compute minutes, API operations, data refreshes, and any other usage limit that applies to your workflow.
  5. Add deployment requirements: account for hosting, connectors, refresh infrastructure, support, governance, or custom domains if your use case requires them.
  6. Verify the terms in writing: confirm currency, taxes, contract duration, included features, private sharing, attribution, and what happens if you exceed a cap or change plans.

For an ad hoc public chart, a free plan may be sufficient. For private team reporting, large audiences, or governed business intelligence, viewer access and deployment requirements can matter more than the price of the chart editor itself.
