Q970 vs. B960 is currently a comparison of leaked Intel Nova Lake-S motherboard-chipset information, not a comparison of released products. A February 2026 PC Gamer report, attributed to leaker Jaykihn, describes Q970 as offering more reported chipset expansion, storage connectivity and high-speed I/O than B960. ComputerBase also describes the 900-series lineup as leaked. Intel has not confirmed either chipset in the official material identified for this topic.
The practical answer is therefore conditional: Q970 could suit a workstation or storage-heavy build if a final motherboard exposes its additional links and ports. B960 could be sufficient for a simpler system. Neither is a safe purchase target yet, because no released Q970 or B960 motherboard, final specification, retail date or verified compatible accessory has been established.
What the Q970 vs. B960 comparison actually represents
The names Q970 and B960 are reported as proposed 900-series desktop chipsets for Intel’s Nova Lake-S platform. The evidence is a leaked feature table reproduced by PC Gamer in February 2026 and a separate ComputerBase report describing the same general lineup as leaked. These reports are useful for understanding the claimed positioning, but they do not turn the figures into Intel specifications.

Intel’s official desktop-chipset pages and chipset-identification guidance located for this subject do not confirm Q970 or B960. They explain how Intel documents released chipsets and direct readers to product-specification pages for feature comparisons; they do not establish a Nova Lake-S launch schedule, final chipset names or board designs.

Every number below should be read as a preliminary value from the reported table. It may change, disappear or be implemented differently by motherboard manufacturers. The comparison is valuable for planning questions, not for ordering hardware.
Reported Q970 and B960 specifications
The leaked table reports the following differences. “Approximately” is retained where the report used that qualification, and the figures are not presented as official Intel data.

The table’s PCIe figures need careful reading. “Total PCIe lanes” and “chipset lanes” are separate labels in the leak, so the 34-versus-44 totals should not be treated as a simple count of only the explicitly listed PCIe 4.0 and 5.0 chipset lanes. The report does not provide enough verified platform documentation to reconstruct how every lane is allocated between processor and chipset.

PCIe: where Q970’s reported advantage matters
More total lanes can support more expansion
At face value, the leaked table gives Q970 44 total PCIe lanes compared with 34 for B960. Ten additional lanes can create room for more expansion devices, but the useful question is how a board wires them. A motherboard could devote lanes to one or more M.2 sockets, add-in cards, networking, storage controllers or other onboard devices. The chipset’s ceiling does not guarantee that all of those options will appear on every board.
Q970 is reported with eight PCIe 5.0 chipset lanes
The reported Q970 allocation includes eight PCIe 5.0 chipset lanes. B960 is listed with 14 PCIe 4.0 chipset lanes and no PCIe 5.0 chipset-lane figure in the reproduced table. PCIe 5.0 can provide more bandwidth per lane than PCIe 4.0, but the benefit depends on a device that supports the newer standard and on the motherboard routing it at that speed.
A buyer considering several fast solid-state drives, a high-bandwidth add-in card and external expansion should look for the final board’s block diagram, not just the chipset name. The diagram should show which sockets use chipset lanes, which operate at PCIe 5.0 or PCIe 4.0, and whether installing one device disables or reduces another slot.

The extra lanes do not automatically improve graphics performance
A chipset comparison does not establish the electrical configuration of the primary graphics slot. That slot may be connected differently from chipset expansion, and its width and generation must be verified in the board manual. Q970’s reported total therefore should not be advertised as a guaranteed frame-rate or graphics upgrade over B960.
Storage: SATA capacity and M.2 planning
Q970’s reported SATA allowance is higher
The leaked table lists four SATA 3.0 lanes for B960 and eight for Q970. For systems using several 2.5-inch solid-state drives, hard drives, optical devices or a SATA storage backplane, that difference could be meaningful. It may also help a board maker offer more native SATA connectors without adding a separate controller.
Those are chipset-level figures, not a promise that a retail board will have four or eight physical connectors. A manufacturer can expose fewer connectors, route some capacity to another function or share resources with M.2 sockets. The board’s storage diagram and manual are the authority for the final connector count and any disabled-port rules.
Fast NVMe storage still requires board-level verification
The reported PCIe figures indicate potential expansion capacity, but they do not identify a guaranteed number of M.2 sockets or their operating modes. Before buying, check the manual for each socket’s lane source, supported generation, maximum device length, heatsink arrangement and interaction with SATA ports or add-in slots. A Q970 board with fewer exposed M.2 sockets can provide less useful storage flexibility than a well-designed B960 board, even if the chipset table favors Q970.
TB4 and USB4: one reported additional port allowance
Q970 is listed with two TB4/USB4 ports, while B960 is listed with one. This is an allowance in the leaked chipset table, not a statement that every Q970 board will have two rear-panel ports or that every B960 board will have one. Board makers choose the connector type, placement, controller implementation and power-delivery features.
For users moving large projects to external storage, connecting docks, driving displays through a compatible dock or attaching high-speed peripherals, an additional port can reduce the need for hubs. The port’s actual capabilities still need checking: a connector may support different combinations of data rate, display output, charging and device wake features. Only the final board specification and manual can establish those details.

USB port classes in the reported table
USB 2 is equal on both reported chipsets
Both B960 and Q970 are reported with 14 USB 2 ports. That count describes possible chipset connectivity, not the number of USB-A or USB-C sockets that must appear on a case’s rear panel. Manufacturers may use some of the allowance for internal headers, firmware-service ports or other board functions.
Q970 has the larger reported 20 Gbps allowance
The table reports approximately two USB 3.2 20 Gbps ports for B960 and approximately four for Q970. This is the clearest USB difference in the leak. It could matter to a creator who regularly uses multiple fast external SSDs, a high-speed capture device and a dock at the same time.
“Approximately” matters here because the report does not establish a mandatory connector layout. A board can expose fewer 20 Gbps ports, place them on internal headers, or allocate them in a way that requires a case with the appropriate front-panel connector.
USB 3.2 10 Gbps is reported as equal
Each chipset is listed with approximately four USB 3.2 10 Gbps ports. If a planned system mostly uses ordinary external drives, keyboards, audio interfaces and other peripherals that do not require 20 Gbps operation, this part of the comparison may not affect the decision.
Who could care about Q970’s reported extra connectivity?
Storage-heavy workstations
Editors, photographers, developers with several local environments and researchers managing multiple data volumes may value the reported eight SATA lanes and larger PCIe budget. The benefit is greatest when the final motherboard exposes several independent storage connections without aggressive lane sharing.
Multi-device external-workflow users
A workstation that routinely connects fast external drives, a dock, capture hardware and other high-throughput peripherals could make practical use of Q970’s reported two TB4/USB4 ports and approximately four USB 3.2 20 Gbps ports. The use case depends on the actual devices and on the board putting those ports where they are accessible.

Expansion-card users
People planning multiple add-in cards, such as specialized networking, storage or acquisition hardware, may appreciate the reported 44 total PCIe lanes and eight PCIe 5.0 chipset lanes. They should still inspect the slot map: physical slot length does not reveal how many electrical lanes are connected or whether two slots share bandwidth.
Mainstream systems with few peripherals
A typical desktop with one graphics card, one or two NVMe drives, a small number of SATA devices and ordinary USB peripherals may not use Q970’s reported headroom. In that situation, a board’s firmware support, slot layout, networking, audio, cooling and price would matter more than a higher chipset ceiling, once those board specifications exist.
Why the chipset number is not the motherboard specification
Chipset capabilities are an upper-level design envelope. Motherboard manufacturers decide how to divide that envelope among rear I/O, front-panel headers, M.2 sockets, SATA connectors, PCIe slots, networking and onboard controllers. They can also omit optional functions to meet a target price or board size.
- A listed port allowance can become an internal header instead of a rear-panel connector.
- An M.2 socket can share lanes with SATA connectors or a PCIe slot.
- Two physical slots can operate at reduced width when both are populated.
- A board can use an additional controller, changing the relationship between chipset lanes and visible connectors.
- Connector type, display support, charging power and retimer or controller choices are board-level details, not settled by the leaked table.
For that reason, compare final manuals line by line. Count the connectors you will actually use, then trace their sharing rules and operating generations. A board with fewer theoretical options but a clearer, non-shared layout may be the better fit.

PC Gamer reports that the leaked table characterizes Q970 and W980 as business-oriented. It also says the leak distinguishes B960 from Z970 on CPU overclocking. Those are contextual descriptions of the leaked lineup, not confirmation of a guaranteed feature set for Q970 or B960.
The business-oriented label should not be turned into assumptions about remote-management features, validation programs, security functions or support terms. None of those details is established by the comparison evidence here. Likewise, the reported distinction from Z970 does not provide a final definition of B960’s overclocking behavior.

For a purchase decision, use the final CPU-support list, firmware notes and board manual. Do not infer overclocking, memory-tuning or enterprise-management support solely from a rumored chipset tier or its name.
What remains unconfirmed
The current evidence does not establish:
- That Intel will launch products named Q970 or B960.
- Final chipset specifications or whether any leaked lane and port counts will change.
- An official Nova Lake-S desktop launch date.
- Retail availability, pricing or regional distribution.
- Any released Q970 or B960 motherboard.
- Which motherboard vendors will support the chipsets, or how they will wire slots and ports.
- Compatibility with a particular processor, memory kit, cooler, expansion card or accessory.
Intel’s product-specification pages should be treated as the confirmation point for released chipset features. Until a product page and board documentation appear, reports based on the leaked table remain provisional.
How to evaluate a future Q970 or B960 motherboard
When boards are announced, use this process rather than relying on the chipset label:

- Read the block diagram. Identify processor-connected and chipset-connected PCIe links, their generations and their lane widths.
- Map storage connections. Count M.2 and SATA connectors, then record every sharing rule that disables or slows another connector.
- Audit external I/O. Count rear-panel and front-panel USB ports by speed class, and verify which connectors carry TB4 or USB4 functionality.
- Check the slot population rules. Note what happens when the second graphics-length slot, an additional M.2 drive or a storage controller is installed.
- Match the layout to the workload. Keep only the ports and slots you can use simultaneously; theoretical capacity has no value if the board cannot expose it in your preferred arrangement.
- Check firmware and processor support. Confirm the exact CPU models, required firmware version and memory support before ordering.
Should you wait before buying?
Yes. The available evidence supports researching the distinction, not buying around it. No released Q970 or B960 board or confirmed compatible Nova Lake-S component is established here. Purchasing a current motherboard on the assumption that it will support an unconfirmed chipset or processor creates a compatibility risk.
If you need a system now, choose from a platform with published processor, chipset and motherboard documentation. If you can wait, revisit Q970 and B960 when Intel publishes official specifications and vendors publish complete manuals. At that point, compare the actual board’s connector layout and sharing table rather than selecting solely by the rumored chipset tier.
Bottom line on Intel Nova Lake-S motherboard chipsets
The leaked comparison portrays Q970 as the higher-connectivity option: 44 total PCIe lanes, eight reported PCIe 5.0 chipset lanes, eight SATA 3.0 lanes, two TB4/USB4 ports and a larger allowance of USB 3.2 20 Gbps ports. B960 is reported with 34 total PCIe lanes, 14 PCIe 4.0 chipset lanes, four SATA 3.0 lanes, one TB4/USB4 port and approximately two USB 3.2 20 Gbps ports. The reported USB 2 and USB 3.2 10 Gbps allowances are equal.
Those figures describe a leak, not finished Intel products. Q970 is potentially more useful for expansion- and storage-intensive builds, while B960 could cover less demanding layouts, but the meaningful choice will be determined by final motherboard wiring, available ports, lane-sharing rules, firmware and confirmed compatibility. Until Intel and board vendors publish that information, treat both names as unconfirmed planning references.
