An Intel Authorized Distributor is an upstream channel supplier; a reseller is the customer-facing seller or system builder. Intel does not sell directly to end users, so the company shown on your order or receipt is normally the first contact for an order problem or ordinary return.

Warranty routing is different from a refund. For a standalone Intel component, Intel’s general guidance is to ask the place of purchase within 30 days and contact Intel Customer Support after 30 days, subject to country and product exceptions. If the Intel part came installed in a complete computer, the system manufacturer handles the system warranty.

Distributor and reseller: the practical difference

The two terms describe different positions in Intel’s sales channel, not two versions of the same support desk.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What an Authorized Distributor does

An Intel Authorized Distributor buys or holds Intel products for onward sale through the channel. Intel directs Partner Alliance members to distributors for current pricing and inventory information. A distributor may sell to a business, system builder, or reseller rather than to an individual consumer, and its own ordering and return terms apply when it is the seller on the transaction.

What a reseller does

A reseller is the company that sells an Intel product to the buyer. It may sell a standalone component, bundle components into a system, or sell a branded computer containing Intel components. Intel says Partner Resellers can resell Intel products purchased through Authorized Distributors, including components and branded systems containing Intel components. That does not mean every website or marketplace listing is an authorized sale; verify the seller’s current status and keep the transaction records.

Intel’s direct-sale position

Intel’s official support article “Does Intel Sell Direct to the Customer?”, last reviewed February 14, 2025, states: “Intel doesn’t sell directly to end users. We only sell our products through Intel® Authorized Distributors.” This is why an end user usually cannot ask Intel to locate a retail order, cancel a shipment, or issue a merchant refund.

Which channel should you contact?

Match the contact to the event that needs fixing. The company that accepted payment and created the order controls fulfillment; a manufacturer’s warranty process is a separate path.

Quote, price, or available stock Authorized Distributor or the channel seller preparing the quote Intel directs partners to distributors and channel sellers for pricing and inventory. A price or stock figure can change by country, product, and date.
Order status, late shipment, wrong item, cancellation, or damage in transit The company named on the order confirmation or receipt That company accepted the transaction and can see its warehouse, carrier, payment, and cancellation records.
Change-of-mind refund or ordinary merchant return The seller or merchant on the receipt Intel’s warranty guidance is not a universal consumer return policy. The seller’s terms and local consumer law govern this type of return.
Warranty issue with a standalone Intel component Place of purchase first within the first 30 days under Intel’s general guidance; Intel Customer Support after 30 days Exceptions depend on product, purchase type, country, and eligibility. Check the live Intel warranty terms before shipping anything.
Intel part installed in a complete computer System manufacturer or system seller Intel says the system manufacturer, rather than Intel, covers the system warranty.
Product bought directly from a distributor under Intel’s DRA guidance The distributor; Intel support if the place of purchase cannot provide support Intel gives this route for covered motherboards, systems, servers, telecom, and optical-networking products.

How to resolve an order problem

An order issue is a sales and fulfillment matter, even when the box contains an Intel product. Use the following sequence so the request reaches the team that can act on it.

  1. Read the order confirmation and invoice. Record the legal seller, order number, date, product description, quantity, and delivery address. A marketplace may display one storefront while a different company appears as the merchant of record.
  2. Contact that seller’s order or customer-service channel. State whether you need a status update, cancellation, replacement for a wrong or damaged item, or a delivery investigation. Include photographs and the carrier’s tracking record when the issue involves transit damage or an incorrect shipment.
  3. For a business purchase, identify the distributor account. If your company bought from an Authorized Distributor rather than a retail reseller, use the distributor’s account representative and published return procedure. Do not assume Intel can amend a distributor invoice or release its inventory.
  4. Escalate with complete records. If the seller cannot respond, preserve the invoice, correspondence, payment record, and tracking information. Intel’s public guidance does not create one universal fulfillment escalation for every reseller, so the seller’s written terms and the applicable consumer rules determine the next step.

For a current quote or stock check, ask the distributor or seller directly. Intel’s channel page for pricing and inventory was last reviewed November 17, 2022; inventory, lead times, and prices should therefore be treated as live commercial information rather than a fixed Intel-published figure.

Support depends on what you bought

Standalone Intel component

A processor, board, or other component sold as an individual product can follow Intel’s component warranty route if the product, seller, region, and proof of purchase qualify. Start with the seller during the initial period specified in Intel’s general guidance. If the issue is a warranty claim after 30 days, Intel says to contact Intel Customer Support.

Intel component inside a complete system

When a processor or other Intel part was installed in a finished computer, the system manufacturer or system seller is responsible for the system warranty. The maker may require the whole computer to be returned, may use its own replacement parts, and may apply its own troubleshooting and shipping process. Contacting Intel about an individual component does not replace that system warranty.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Distributor purchase under DRA guidance

Intel’s DRA guidance gives a distributor-first route for covered motherboards, systems, servers, telecommunications products, and optical-networking products. Contact the distributor named on the purchase documents. If the distributor is unavailable or cannot provide support, Intel’s guidance identifies Intel support as the alternative. Confirm that the product and purchase channel fall within the DRA terms before sending hardware.

Ordinary return versus Intel warranty claim

These are legally and operationally different requests.

Ordinary seller return

An ordinary return includes a change of mind, an unwanted item, a duplicate purchase, or a request for a refund under the merchant’s policy. Ask the seller for a return authorization and follow its packaging, deadline, restocking-fee, and shipping instructions. Whether a return is mandatory, optional, or subject to a cooling-off period depends on the seller’s terms and the country where the transaction occurred. Intel’s manufacturer warranty page does not establish a universal refund right.

Manufacturer warranty return

A warranty claim alleges a covered defect or failure during the warranty period. Intel’s general guidance says to contact the place of purchase within 30 days, with stated exceptions. It also notes different handling for physical-store and internet purchases and says consumers may contact Intel when the seller cannot provide support. After 30 days, Intel directs customers to Intel Customer Support for warranty claims. Because eligibility rules can change, use the current product-specific warranty page rather than relying on an old retailer listing.

What happens to the original product

Intel’s replacement services generally require the original product to be returned. Do not discard the failed component, remove identifying labels, or ship it before receiving the required authorization and label. The seller or Intel will tell you whether the product must be packed separately, whether accessories are needed, and where it must be sent.

Intel warranty replacement services

Intel’s page “What Warranty Return Services Are Offered by Intel?”, last reviewed January 28, 2026, describes three services. Availability depends on customer eligibility and country.

Service Eligibility and geography described by Intel Timing, fees, and customer obligations
Standard Warranty Replacement (SWR) Available worldwide, subject to the applicable warranty and eligibility checks. The customer returns the original product with Intel’s prepaid label. Intel ships a replacement after receiving and verifying the original. Intel describes delivery as up to two weeks after the claim is initiated and the original is returned. No service fee is stated for SWR.
Rapid Replacement Eligible customers in the United States and Canada; Intel describes this option for boxed Intel processors, not tray processors. Next-business-day replacement is described. A supported credit card, a service fee, and a refundable deposit are required. The original processor must be returned within 30 days.
Advanced Warranty Replacement (AWR) Qualifying Intel Partner Alliance Prestige and Partner tiers that bought genuine Intel products through authorized channels; the cited page limits the option to boxed processors. Intel describes next-business-day replacement. The original must be returned within 30 days. Eligibility is tied to the partner tier and purchase channel, not merely to owning an Intel product.

“Boxed” and “tray” are not interchangeable categories for these services. A processor’s packaging and supply route can determine whether Rapid Replacement or AWR is available, so retain the product packaging and invoice.

How to verify a seller before filing a claim

  1. Search Intel’s Distributor Partner Directory. Use the current directory to check whether a company is listed as an Authorized Distributor. Directory entries and authorization status can change.
  2. Ask Intel about an uncertain name. Intel advises contacting support with a seller’s name to ask whether it was previously an Authorized Distributor. “Previously” matters: an old listing does not prove current authorization.
  3. Check the transaction chain. Keep the distributor or reseller name, invoice number, date, product identifier, and seller’s terms. A listing that merely uses Intel branding is not proof of an authorized channel.
  4. Use Intel’s Online Warranty and Support tool. Check the product’s warranty eligibility before arranging shipment. A positive product lookup does not remove the need for valid proof of purchase.

A qualifying Intel Partner Alliance member automatically becomes an Authorized Reseller, according to Intel. For buyers, the practical check remains the current directory and the documentation for the actual transaction.

Information to prepare for warranty support

Intel’s warranty checklist calls for more than a model name. Gather these items before contacting the seller or Intel:

  • A valid receipt or invoice showing the original purchaser.
  • The product name and a clear description of the problem, including when it began and any error message or diagnostic result.
  • Your contact information and complete shipping details.
  • Identifying data such as the part number, serial number, FPO, or ATPO, when present.
  • Any order, return-authorization, and carrier tracking numbers already issued.

Photograph labels and the invoice before packaging a component. If a reseller asks you to send the product to a different company, obtain the destination and authorization in writing. This prevents a merchant return from being confused with an Intel replacement claim.

Purchases Intel may not cover

Intel warns that it does not honor warranty requests for products that are used, gray-market, second-hand, gifted, or purchased outside its authorized distributor/reseller channel. Those categories can also make the original purchaser or warranty start date impossible to establish. A receipt from an intermediary may not cure an unauthorized supply route.

If you bought a used computer, the system maker’s policy may be the only available support path, and it may exclude transferred warranties. Check that policy before removing a component or attempting a manufacturer claim.

A decision path for common cases

“The seller has not shipped my processor.”

Contact the seller shown on the order confirmation. Ask for a confirmed ship date, cancellation terms, and a refund timeline. Intel is not the direct seller and cannot provide the merchant’s inventory or payment status.

“The package contains the wrong Intel part.”

Request a merchant correction from the company that shipped the order. Keep the unopened packaging and photographs until the seller issues instructions. Do not open or install the wrong part while a return is pending.

“My standalone processor failed shortly after purchase.”

Start with the place of purchase within the first 30 days under Intel’s general guidance. Supply the invoice, product identifiers, and problem description. If the seller cannot provide support, Intel’s guidance allows consumers to contact Intel; the applicable exception depends on the country and purchase type.

“The component failed after the first month.”

For a warranty claim, contact Intel Customer Support after 30 days as directed by Intel’s general guidance, then follow the eligibility check and replacement-service instructions. An ordinary refund request still belongs with the seller.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

“The processor is inside a prebuilt computer.”

Contact the system manufacturer or system seller. Intel states that the system manufacturer covers the system warranty, so an individual Intel component claim may not be accepted.

“The distributor is no longer responding.”

Collect the invoice and correspondence, confirm whether the product falls under Intel’s DRA guidance, and contact Intel support if that guidance applies. For a normal merchant dispute, use the seller’s written terms and the consumer-protection process available in your jurisdiction.

Common mistakes that delay resolution

  • Sending every return to Intel. A change-of-mind refund and a late shipment are merchant matters, not automatically Intel warranty claims.
  • Calling a reseller a distributor. The distributor supplies the channel; the reseller usually accepted the retail order. Ask the company named on the invoice which role it played.
  • Ignoring system coverage. A processor installed in a complete computer generally follows the system manufacturer’s warranty route.
  • Using an old authorization claim. A former listing or a seller’s own “authorized” label is not current verification. Check Intel’s directory or ask Intel support.
  • Losing proof of purchase. Intel’s checklist requires evidence of the original purchaser and product identity. Save invoices, order confirmations, and serial-number photographs.
  • Confusing boxed and tray processors. Intel’s Rapid Replacement and AWR descriptions apply to boxed processors, while tray processors are excluded from Rapid Replacement.
  • Assuming the same rule applies worldwide. Warranty eligibility, consumer return rights, taxes, shipping, service fees, and distributor procedures vary by country.

What can change over time

Authorization directories, inventory, prices, replacement eligibility, service fees, and merchant return policies are not permanent. Intel’s operational warranty page was reviewed January 28, 2026, while its pricing-and-inventory channel page was reviewed November 17, 2022. Use the current Intel page, the current directory, and the seller’s written terms when you open a case. If those sources conflict, ask the seller or Intel support to confirm which rule applies to your product and country before shipping it.

The short rule to remember

Follow the money for an order: contact the company that accepted the order. Follow the warranty context for a defect: use the seller first within Intel’s stated initial period, Intel after 30 days for an eligible standalone component, and the system manufacturer when the part was sold inside a complete computer. A distributor can be the correct contact for a direct distributor purchase or a DRA-covered product, but it is not automatically the same as the reseller you see at checkout.
