A single-user experiment reported on 15 October 2026 found that an Intel Core Ultra 9 285H laptop repeatedly reached 105°C and throttled at only 35W with its stock liquid-metal interface. After the owner replaced the liquid metal over the processor with a 25 × 25 mm graphene sheet and added Thermal Grizzly putty to other components, the laptop reportedly stayed below 100°C, averaged about 10°C cooler, and sustained 85W without thermal throttling. Cinebench 2026 increased from 3,431 to 4,634 points—nearly 35%.
Those figures come from one Reddit user’s before-and-after test relayed by Wccftech, not a controlled review. They show how strongly cooling, firmware and power limits can affect a 285H score, but they do not establish that every laptop will get the same result or that replacing liquid metal is universally safe.
What the reported 285H experiment changed
The owner, Reddit user u/kiodrag, described a laptop that reached the processor’s 105°C thermal limit and throttled while drawing about 35W. The reported modification involved removing the stock liquid-metal interface, cutting a graphene sheet to 25 × 25 mm so it covered the CPU silicon, and applying Thermal Grizzly thermal putty to other components. After reassembly, the processor reportedly remained below 100°C, with average temperature down by about 10°C.
With the revised interface and the laptop’s resulting power behavior, the CPU could reportedly draw 85W under load without thermal throttling. That extra sustained power helps explain the benchmark change: Cinebench 2026 rose from 3,431 to 4,634 points.

| Measurement | Before the reported swap | After the reported swap |
|---|---|---|
| Interface over CPU | Stock liquid metal | 25 × 25 mm graphene sheet |
| Reported load power | About 35W with throttling | Up to 85W without reported thermal throttling |
| Temperature | Repeatedly reached 105°C | Stayed below 100°C; average about 10°C lower |
| Cinebench 2026 | 3,431 points | 4,634 points |
The score difference is approximately 35% based on the two numbers above. It is a result from one machine, one modification and one user’s test conditions, rather than a guaranteed performance uplift for the Core Ultra 9 285H.
Why a 35W result cannot be compared directly with an 85W result
Intel’s CES 2025 performance-preview material lists the Core Ultra 9 285H in a 45W PL1 test configuration. PL1 is a sustained power target; laptop makers can configure different long-term and short-term limits, fan curves, temperature targets and performance modes. A machine allowed to hold 85W is operating in a very different performance envelope from one constrained to 35W or 45W.

- Dual USB Hub: With a built-in dual USB hub, the laptop fan enables you to connect additional USB devices to your laptop, providing extra connectivity options for your peripherals. Warm tips: The packaged cable is a USB-to-USB connection. Type C connection devices require a Type C to USB adapter. Please plug the cooling pad's USB cable into a 5V 1A adapter for best performance; otherwise, the fans may fail to spin or run at very low speed.
- Whisper-Quiet Operation: Enjoy a noise-free and interference-free environment with super quiet fans, allowing you to focus on your work or entertainment without distractions.
- Enhanced Cooling Performance: The laptop cooling pad features 5 built-in fans (big fan: 4.72-inch, small fans: 2.76-inch), all with blue LEDs. 2 On/Off switches enable simultaneous control of all 5 fans and LEDs. Simply press the switch to select 1 fan working, 4 fans working, or all 5 working together.
- Ergonomic Design: The laptop cooling stand also serves as an ergonomic stand, offering 6 adjustable height settings that enable you to customize the angle for optimal comfort during gaming, movie watching, or working for extended periods. Ideal gift for both the back-to-school season and Father's Day.
- Secure and Universal Compatibility: Designed with 2 stoppers on the front surface, this laptop cooler prevents laptops from slipping and keeps 12-17 inch laptops—including Apple Macbook Pro Air, HP, Alienware, Dell, ASUS, and more—cool and secure during use.
Consequently, the benchmark increase reflects more than the thermal interface alone. Better heat transfer may have allowed the laptop firmware to maintain a higher package-power limit, but chassis capacity, fan mode, BIOS settings, ambient temperature and run duration also determine the final score. A lower-temperature run at a lower power limit could score less than a hotter run that is allowed to consume more power.

The reported symptoms are consistent with a poor or degraded heat path: the processor reached its limit quickly, then reduced clocks and power to protect itself. Improving contact between the silicon and heatsink can reduce thermal resistance. The putty change may also have improved contact on nearby memory or voltage-regulation components, although the report does not isolate those effects.

Important specifications are missing. The report does not identify the graphene sheet’s manufacturer, thickness, compression requirements or exact laptop model, and it provides no long-term durability data. It also does not show whether the original liquid metal was applied incorrectly, shifted, contaminated or otherwise defective. Without those details, the case cannot establish a universal graphene-versus-liquid-metal advantage.
Is replacing laptop liquid metal with graphene safe?
It is a high-risk modification for most owners. Liquid metal and graphene interfaces have different thickness, compression and surface-contact requirements. A sheet that is too thick can prevent the heatsink from seating; one that is too thin can leave gaps. Cutting or positioning the material inaccurately can create uneven pressure, while disturbing liquid metal can cause spills or poor coverage. Opening the chassis may void warranty coverage, and an interface that performs well initially may change as screws settle, pads compress or the material shifts during transport.

Before attempting any replacement, confirm the exact laptop service manual, heatsink screw order, replacement-interface dimensions and electrical-clearance requirements. Back up data, disconnect the battery where the manufacturer permits it, and document the original assembly. If the machine is under warranty or the user cannot verify compression and clearance, professional service is safer than copying this experiment.
How to diagnose 105°C throttling without opening the laptop
- Record the conditions. Note room temperature, charger connection, Windows power mode, manufacturer performance profile, fan mode and BIOS version.
- Monitor the package. Use a hardware monitor to log CPU temperature, package power, clocks and thermal-throttling flags during a repeatable workload.
- Check power limits. Compare the configured PL1 and short-term limit with the advertised 285H test context; a low limit can look like a cooling fault.
- Clean the airflow path. Inspect vents and fans, elevate the rear of the laptop and retest before changing the internal interface.
- Repeat the benchmark. Run the same Cinebench 2026 workload for the same number of passes, recording both peak and sustained behavior.
A separate Reddit discussion about a Core Ultra 9 285H Zephyrus G16 reported roughly 106°C spikes and HWiNFO thermal-throttling flags. Commenters described different outcomes after changing power limits, airflow or cooling. These observations are useful troubleshooting context, not independent validation of the graphene result.

How to test cooling changes fairly
For a meaningful comparison, keep the laptop model, BIOS, power profile, ambient temperature, fan mode, workload, run count and interface thickness constant. Record peak and sustained temperature, package power, clock behavior, throttling flags, fan noise and benchmark score. Change one variable at a time. Otherwise, a score increase may come from a different power profile or fan curve rather than the interface material.
The most defensible conclusion is limited: this reported 285H laptop appears to have gained thermal headroom after a graphene-sheet and putty modification, enabling a higher sustained power level and a much higher Cinebench result. It does not prove a repeatable 35% gain, universal compatibility, long-term reliability or safety for other Core Ultra 9 285H designs.
