Most 6th-generation Intel Core desktop i5 and i7 processors use the LGA1151 socket, but that label alone does not make a motherboard compatible. Intel lists 100- and 200-series chipset boards for these processor families and says 300-series chipset boards are incompatible with 6th-generation desktop Core processors. Before buying or installing a board, confirm support for your exact CPU on the motherboard maker’s CPU support list.
Which socket does a 6th-generation desktop Core processor use?
Intel lists applicable 6th-generation desktop Core i5 and i7 processors as using LGA1151. The generation commonly includes desktop model numbers in the 6xxx families, but check the exact processor model and package: Intel lists some package variants separately. See Intel’s Core i5 desktop processor information and Core i7 desktop processor information.
This guidance is for desktop Core processors, not every mobile or embedded processor described as 6th generation.
Which motherboard chipsets are compatible?
Intel’s guidance for the applicable 6th-generation desktop Core i5 and i7 families lists motherboards with 100- or 200-series chipsets. Intel also explicitly says 6th-generation desktop Core processors are not compatible with 300-series chipset motherboards, even though those boards may also carry an LGA1151 socket. The socket name is therefore not enough to establish compatibility. See Intel’s LGA1151 processor installation and compatibility guidance.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
How to verify a specific motherboard
- Identify the exact CPU. Use the full model number, not just “Core i5,” “Core i7,” or “LGA1151.” Confirm its package in Intel’s processor information.
- Check the chipset family. For the covered 6th-generation desktop Core families, look for a 100- or 200-series board; do not treat a 300-series LGA1151 board as compatible.
- Open the motherboard maker’s CPU support page. Find your exact processor in the list for the exact board model and revision. Intel directs users to the motherboard manufacturer to confirm board-level support.
- Check firmware requirements and update instructions. Follow the board maker’s stated procedure for the supported CPU and firmware. Do not assume a board supports a processor merely because its socket and chipset appear suitable.
- Verify the remaining build requirements. Check memory type, cooler mounting and thermal/power suitability, and the board’s physical form factor and features against the parts you plan to use.
Memory and cooler checks
Memory type
Intel’s listed 6th-generation Core i5 memory support includes DDR3L 1600 MHz or DDR4 2133 MHz. These are processor memory-support figures, not a promise that every LGA1151 motherboard accepts both types. Check the specific board’s specifications: the board determines which memory type it uses and whether it supports the kit. Intel’s Core i5 desktop processor information contains the family-level memory table.
Cooler compatibility
A shared socket label does not establish that a particular fan-heatsink is suitable. Intel says heatsink compatibility depends on matching the processor’s thermal and power requirements. Confirm the cooler’s mounting compatibility and suitability for the CPU before reusing or buying one; Intel’s Core i7 desktop processor information provides its heatsink guidance.

Installing an LGA1151 processor safely
Follow the motherboard and processor instructions for your exact hardware. Intel warns that improper installation can damage the processor and make it inoperable. Its LGA1151 installation guidance instructs users to make sure the processor is seated correctly before operating the Independent Loading Mechanism lever. Do not force the processor or lever; stop and recheck alignment if it does not seat as directed.
