For complex, dynamic, or reusable form logic, use reactive forms: define the form model in the component and bind it to the template. For a small form whose logic can stay in the template, template-driven forms are a simpler fit. Angular’s current guidance also includes Signal Forms; check your project’s Angular version before choosing them, because the comparison guide marks them stable in v22 and later.
Which Angular forms approach fits your application?
Angular documents three approaches: reactive forms, template-driven forms, and Signal Forms. The first two are established options with distinct ways of managing state and connecting it to the UI. Signal Forms are another option in current Angular guidance, with version-specific stability.
| Approach | Where the form model lives | How updates work | Validation style | Good fit |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Reactive forms | Explicitly in the component | Synchronous model-to-view updates; changes are also exposed through observable streams | Validator functions | Complex, dynamic, reusable, or heavily tested form logic |
| Template-driven forms | Managed by template directives | Asynchronous data flow | Template attributes and directives | Small, straightforward forms whose logic can remain in the template |
| Signal Forms | Compared with the other approaches in Angular’s current guide | See Angular’s version-specific comparison | See Angular’s version-specific comparison | Consider only after checking the project version and the current comparison guide |
Angular characterizes reactive forms as more scalable, reusable, and testable. For the underlying comparison and version details, see Angular’s forms overview and its Signal Forms comparison.

How do you integrate a reactive form?
A reactive form’s component model is the source of truth. Use a FormControl for one field, a FormGroup for named related controls, and a FormArray when the number of controls can change dynamically.
#1 Best Overall
- Import the forms API. Add
ReactiveFormsModulefrom@angular/formsto the standalone component’simports, or to the relevant NgModule in an NgModule-based application. - Define the model in the component. Create the control, group, or array that represents the form fields.
- Bind the template. For a single control, use
[formControl]. For a group, put[formGroup]on the<form>element and connect each field withformControlName. - Validate and handle submission. Attach validators to the model, show feedback based on validity and interaction state, and prevent or handle submission when the form is invalid.
Reactive forms keep form logic explicit and make programmatic updates and form-level behavior easier to organize as requirements grow. See the Reactive Forms guide for Angular’s model and binding details.
When a custom control needs to work with Angular forms
ControlValueAccessor is the bridge between Angular form controls and DOM elements. It is the extension point to use when connecting a custom control to the forms API.

How do you integrate a template-driven form?
Template-driven forms let directives build and manage the form model. They suit simple forms where keeping logic close to the markup is useful.
- Import the forms API. Add
FormsModuleto the standalone component’simportsor the relevant NgModule. - Bind fields to component properties. Use
[(ngModel)]on an input and give each form control anameso the form can track it. - Track overall status and submission. Angular’s
NgFormcreates a top-levelFormGroupand aggregates value and validation status. Handle submission with the form’sngSubmitoutput. - Show feedback from validity state. Use the form and control state to explain what needs correction and, where appropriate, make submission unavailable until the form is valid.
Because its model is implicit and data flow is asynchronous, a template-driven form can become harder to reuse or manage when its logic grows more complex. See the Template-driven Forms guide for the directive-based setup.

How should you validate fields and show errors?
Angular provides built-in validators and supports custom validation. Choose the validation mechanism that matches the form approach: attach functions to a reactive control, or express constraints through template attributes and directives in a template-driven form.
Reactive validation
Synchronous validators return validation errors or null. Asynchronous validators return a Promise or Observable that later emits errors or null. Angular runs asynchronous validators only after synchronous validation passes, and waits for asynchronous validation to finish before setting errors.

Useful feedback in either approach
- Use validity and interaction state to decide when an error message should appear; an untouched field may not need an immediate error message.
- Make the message specific enough to tell the user what to fix rather than merely stating that the field is invalid.
- Use the form’s validity state in the submission path as well as in the UI, so invalid data is not accepted just because a user bypasses a disabled button.
Angular’s guidance on validators and control states is in the Form Validation guide.

Can Signal Forms work alongside existing forms?
Do not treat Signal Forms as a required replacement for an existing reactive or template-driven form. Angular’s migration guide describes compatibility in both directions: a FormGroup can be wrapped for a signal form, and a signal form control can be exposed for use in a FormGroup. That allows incremental integration where an existing form section should stay in place. Check the project’s Angular version and the Signal Forms comparison before relying on the current stability status; the guide identifies Signal Forms as stable in v22 and later. Migration details are in Angular’s Reactive Forms migration guide.
