Insure&Go Bare Essentials is a basic single-trip policy for Australian travellers, but the cover differs sharply by trip type. For international trips, its current benefit table lists unlimited emergency medical expenses outside Australia, alongside capped cancellation and baggage cover. For domestic trips, it lists no medical-and-other-expenses cover. Both versions leave out several common travel-disruption benefits, including travel-delay expenses.

This review covers Insure&Go Australia’s Single-Trip Travel Insurance under the Product Disclosure Statement (PDS) effective 7 October 2026—not UK products or older Australian policy versions. Check the PDS that applied on your purchase date, as well as your Insurance Certificate, before relying on any benefit.

What does Insure&Go Bare Essentials cover?

The figures below are Australian dollars and are maximums per insured person per trip, subject to policy terms, excesses and sub-limits. The PDS says its benefit tables are summaries, not the full contract. Your PDS and Insurance Certificate together set out the cover, and the certificate shows the applicable excess.

Domestic single trip

Benefit Bare Essentials limit
Trip cancellation $2,000
Medical and other expenses outside Australia Nil
Additional emergency expenses Nil
Personal belongings and baggage $2,000
Personal liability $1,500,000

Do not assume this domestic policy covers emergency medical expenses: the PDS table lists nil for medical and other expenses outside Australia, and nil for additional emergency expenses.

Does Bare Essentials cover cancellation?

Yes. The table lists up to $10,000 for an international trip and $2,000 for a domestic trip. Whether a particular cancellation is covered depends on the policy’s qualifying reasons, conditions and exclusions; the limit alone does not establish that a claim will be paid.

Compare the relevant ceiling with your prepaid, non-refundable trip costs, then check the wording for the circumstances that qualify. If your likely eligible costs exceed the limit, consider whether a higher tier better fits your exposure.

  • Travel-delay expenses or delayed baggage
  • Money, passport and travel documents
  • Hospital cash, trip resumption or special-event benefits
  • Accidental death or permanent disability, legal expenses or airline-hijack benefits
  • Pet care, rental-car excess waiver or loss of income
  • COVID-19 cancellation or disruption

The domestic table also lists no travel-delay expenses, money, legal expenses, rental-car excess waiver, loss-of-income benefit or COVID-19 cancellation or disruption cover. CHOICE’s feature summary likewise displays $0 for travel-delay expenses and rental-car excess, but the current PDS is the controlling source for policy terms.

Is Bare Essentials enough for international travel?

It may suit a traveller whose priority is overseas medical cover and who can accept relatively modest limits and the absence of several disruption benefits. The unlimited medical-and-other-expenses entry is a notable feature, but it does not remove exclusions, excesses or eligibility conditions. The $10,000 cancellation and $5,000 baggage ceilings may be inadequate for a costly itinerary or high-value belongings.

For domestic travel, the decision is different: the table lists no medical-and-other-expenses cover. Assess the cancellation and baggage limits against your trip, and do not treat Bare Essentials as a source of emergency medical cover within Australia.

What conditions and exclusions should you check?

Pre-existing medical conditions

Cover for a pre-existing condition requires an application and medical screening, acceptance by the insurer, payment of any additional premium, and confirmation on the Insurance Certificate. The PDS also excludes claims arising from certain conditions involving symptoms or pending tests, travelling against medical advice, or travelling to obtain medical treatment or advice. Confirm your individual position before buying.

Destinations, activities and cruises

  • The PDS excludes claims connected with travel in, to or through places subject to Australian Government “Do Not Travel” advice and addresses conflict and sanctions restrictions. It also says Antarctica is not covered.
  • Commercial cruise-ship travel is not covered under this single-trip PDS; the document directs travellers to a Cruise policy.
  • Bare Essentials is not available with the Worldwide Including travel plan.
  • Check the PDS activity list and your certificate for any upgrade. Winter sports and Activities Plus have specific terms; upgraded activities are not covered unless Insure&Go agrees in writing and the required premium is paid.

Baggage and proof

Claims for belongings that are lost, stolen or damaged require proof of ownership. Check the wording for item exclusions and limits. The Bare Essentials table does not list a personal-electronics sub-limit or a separate valuables benefit; do not infer that an item is covered just because the overall baggage limit exceeds its value.

How should you compare Bare Essentials with Silver and Gold?

Get quotes using the same travellers and trip details, then compare the certificate and PDS—not just the headline premium. Insure&Go describes Bare Essentials as its simplest cover level, but the right tier depends on the cover you need and the terms that apply to your trip.

  • Trip and destination: Confirm domestic or international cover, destinations, trip duration and whether a cruise is involved.
  • Medical needs: For overseas trips, examine emergency medical cover, dental limits and repatriation. If you have a pre-existing condition, verify screening, acceptance and certificate wording.
  • Cancellation costs: Compare your eligible prepaid costs with the applicable $10,000 international or $2,000 domestic limit, and review covered reasons and exclusions.
  • Baggage: Check the total limit, item terms and excluded categories against what you are taking.
  • Disruption: Decide whether the absence of travel-delay and delayed-baggage cover matters for your itinerary.
  • Excess and premium: The excess applies per insured person per event when applicable. Insure&Go says a higher premium can reduce the excess, while choosing a lower premium can mean a higher excess. Compare the actual quote and certificate across tiers.
  • Activities and upgrades: Make sure the activities you plan are covered and that any required upgrade is shown on the certificate.

No fixed premium is established here, so value cannot be judged from a generic price claim. Obtain a quote for your exact itinerary and compare the premium, excess, limits, exclusions and add-ons for each tier.

Which policy wording applies?

The current Australian PDS is effective 7 October 2026, but the applicable wording depends on when you bought the policy. Insure&Go’s policy-wordings page says customers should retrieve the version applicable to their purchase date from their account. Read that PDS alongside your Insurance Certificate, which records the selected cover, applicable excess and any accepted conditions or upgrades.

CHOICE also publishes an Insure&Go Bare Essentials product review. Its expert rating and component scores are member-only on the page reviewed; no score is stated here. Use CHOICE as a secondary feature summary and the applicable policy documents for definitive terms.
