Choose the Instax SQUARE 2 if you want Warm and Cool mood filters, dedicated close-up/standard/landscape focus ranges, and a newer, more configurable body. Choose the Instax SQUARE SQ1 if you prefer the lightest camera and the simplest point-and-shoot workflow, especially for selfies.
Both cameras expose the same 62 × 62 mm image on the same Instax SQUARE film. Exposure, ejection and development are also broadly alike, so this is not a choice between different image sizes or film systems. The meaningful differences are creative control, body depth and weight, the selfie/close-up workflow, and battery format.

The weights and dimensions exclude batteries, film and strap, so a loaded camera will weigh more. Battery-life figures are manufacturer ratings, not a guarantee for every shooting pattern.
What both cameras do the same
Identical film format and picture area
Each camera accepts Instax SQUARE film and exposes a 62 × 62 mm picture. Buying one does not lock you into a different cartridge type, and film purchased for one body can be used in the other. Fujifilm lists 10 prints per cartridge; a 40-exposure multipack is also available. Film is sold separately from both cameras.

The square frame is useful for portraits, groups and social snapshots because you do not have to rotate the camera to change between horizontal and vertical compositions. It also means that changing bodies will not change the size of the physical print or the image area.
Automatic exposure and similar timing
Both models use automatic exposure and list a programmed shutter range of 1/2 to 1/400 second. The camera meters the scene and selects the exposure; there is no manual shutter-speed or aperture control to set. Prints eject automatically after the exposure and take approximately 90 seconds to develop.
That shared automation makes either model approachable for a first instant camera. It also sets expectations: these are quick, self-contained cameras rather than tools for deliberately controlling depth of field, shutter motion or exposure compensation.
The differences that affect your decision
SQUARE 2: physical Warm and Cool filters
The SQUARE 2 has a switch that places a Warm or Cool filter over the lens, with an Off position for an unfiltered look. Fujifilm describes it as a way to match the mood of a scene. The control is mechanical and available before you press the shutter, so you can decide on a color treatment without editing a scan later.
Warm is suited to scenes where you want a golden, cozy impression; Cool gives the frame a cooler cast. The filters do not turn the camera into a manual color-grading system, and the available evidence does not establish a measurable image-quality advantage over the SQ1. Their value is the immediate creative choice and the ability to repeat a look across a set of prints.
SQUARE 2: three explicit focus ranges
Before shooting, the SQUARE 2 lets you select one of three focus ranges:

- Close-up: 0.3–0.5 m.
- Standard: 0.5–3.0 m.
- Landscape: 3.0 m and beyond.
These ranges give you a clear physical control for a nearby subject, an ordinary conversation-distance scene, or a distant view. You still need to estimate the subject’s distance; the camera does not display a measured value. Selecting the matching range is especially helpful when you move from a selfie to a group shot or from a person to a landscape.
SQ1: fewer controls and a combined selfie/close-up mode
The SQ1 is deliberately simpler. Twisting the lens turns it on; twisting it again selects Selfie mode. Fujifilm states that the Selfie setting also functions as the close-up mode, and a built-in mirror helps you frame your face.
There is no equivalent Warm/Cool filter switch and no separate Standard or Landscape selector. That reduction is useful if you want fewer decisions at a party or if a beginner will be sharing the camera. The trade-off is that you cannot choose a color mood in-camera or explicitly tell the lens that a distant scene is a landscape.
Body size and carrying weight
The SQ1 is 60 g lighter before accessories and is shallower by 13.5 mm according to the listed dimensions. Its 130.7 × 118.6 × 57.5 mm body is easier to slip into a small bag than the SQUARE 2’s 139.0 × 119.5 × 71.0 mm body. The SQUARE 2 is also 450 g before batteries, film and strap, compared with 390 g for the SQ1.
Those differences matter when the camera will hang from a wrist all day, travel in a small shoulder bag, or be handed around at an event. They matter less if the camera normally stays on a table or in a dedicated case. Neither body should be judged by empty-camera weight alone: a cartridge, batteries and strap add to the carry weight.

- Flawless 4K@60Hz Video with HDMI: Delivers exceptional clarity and smoothness with its 4K@60Hz HDMI port, making it ideal for high-definition presentations and entertainment. (Note: Only the HDMI port supports video projection; the USB-C port is for data transfer only.)
- Double Up on Efficiency: The two USB-A 3.0 ports and a USB-C port support a fast 5Gbps data rate, significantly boosting your transfer speeds and improving productivity.
- Fast and Reliable 85W Charging: Offers high-capacity, speedy charging for laptops up to 85W, so you spend less time tethered to an outlet and more time being productive.
- What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (7-in-1), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
These ratings are similar in film capacity but not interchangeable in practice: the cameras require different battery types. Before choosing, check which format is readily available where you live and whether you already keep that type for other equipment. Carrying a spare set is sensible for travel because both cameras depend on batteries for exposure, ejection and flash operation.
Which camera fits your way of shooting?
Choose SQUARE 2 for deliberate creative control
The SQUARE 2 is the stronger match when you expect to use the Warm/Cool switch or want a dedicated focus choice for every distance. A portrait session can use Warm for a consistent tone, Close-up for a tight subject and Standard for a group. A day of travel can switch to Landscape for distant architecture without relying on a single automatic mode.
It is also the more suitable option if you want to learn a small amount of instant-camera technique. You can make an explicit decision about distance and color before each exposure, then see the result after the approximately 90-second development period.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Choose SQ1 for the least complicated operation
The SQ1 is a better fit when the camera will be used by beginners, children old enough to handle an instant camera safely, or a group that should be able to pick it up and shoot without reading a mode guide. Its lens-twist startup and single Selfie/close-up position reduce the number of settings that can be left in the wrong state.
The built-in selfie mirror is useful for self-portraits because it gives you a visual reference for your face placement. If most of your pictures are ordinary snapshots and selfies rather than carefully staged scenes, the SQ1’s simpler control scheme may be an advantage rather than a limitation.
Choose based on what you carry
For events, festivals and trips where every gram matters, the SQ1’s 390 g body and shallower profile are the deciding specifications. For a camera bag that already has room for a larger body, the SQUARE 2’s extra depth buys you the filter switch and explicit focus ranges.

Do not choose based on film compatibility
There is no film-format advantage: both cameras use the same Instax SQUARE cartridges and expose the same 62 × 62 mm area. If your decision is only about print size, either body meets the requirement.
How to use the SQUARE 2 correctly
Set up and load film
- Insert four AA alkaline batteries, observing the polarity marks in the battery compartment.
- Load an Instax SQUARE cartridge with the yellow marks aligned as indicated by the cartridge and camera. Keep the film pack sealed until you are ready to load it.
- Turn the camera on and allow the protective dark slide to eject before taking a picture. Do not open the film door after loading unless the cartridge is empty; exposing the pack to light can ruin the remaining sheets.
Select distance and mood before pressing the shutter
- Estimate the subject distance. Select Close-up for 0.3–0.5 m, Standard for 0.5–3.0 m, or Landscape for 3.0 m and beyond.
- Move the filter switch to Warm, Cool or Off. Decide this before framing so the color treatment is intentional.
- Frame through the viewfinder, keep fingers clear of the lens and flash, and press the shutter once.
- Let the print eject automatically. Handle it by the edges and allow about 90 seconds for development; do not bend or shake it while it develops.
For a close selfie
Set Close-up, keep the camera within the 0.3–0.5 m range, and use the viewfinder to compose. The official SQUARE 2 description pairs Close-up mode with its built-in selfie mirror for in-focus selfies. The mirror helps position your face, but it does not remove the need to hold the camera at the correct distance.
How to use the SQ1 correctly
Start the camera and choose Selfie mode
- Install two CR2 lithium batteries with the polarity shown in the compartment.
- Twist the lens to turn the camera on. Load an Instax SQUARE cartridge before shooting and allow the dark slide to eject.
- For a self-portrait or nearby subject, twist the lens again to select Selfie mode. Use the built-in mirror to position your face.
- For an ordinary snapshot, leave the lens in its normal position, frame the scene and press the shutter.
- Wait approximately 90 seconds for the print to develop after automatic ejection.
Because Selfie mode doubles as close-up mode, switch back to the normal position when you move to a subject at ordinary or distant range. The SQ1 does not provide the SQUARE 2’s separate Standard and Landscape selections, so careful framing and sensible subject distance are particularly important.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Film, battery and ownership costs
Film is a recurring expense
Both cameras require separately sold film. Fujifilm lists 10 prints per cartridge, and a 40-exposure multipack is available. The camera body is a one-time purchase; every successful exposure consumes one sheet, including accidental shots and test frames. When comparing deals, calculate the price per exposure rather than looking only at the camera’s shelf price.
The same film works in both models, so changing from SQ1 to SQUARE 2 does not create a new consumables ecosystem. Your long-term film budget will therefore be essentially independent of the body you select, although local film pricing and availability vary by country and retailer.

The rated capacity of about 30 ten-exposure packs per new set is an estimate, not a guaranteed number. Flash use, cold weather, storage age and the number of film ejections can affect real results. Keep the required battery format with your spare film, and remove depleted cells if the camera will be stored for an extended period.

Known SQUARE 2 price signal and SQ1 uncertainty
Digital Camera World reported an expected SQUARE 2 retail price of $119.95, £89.99 or CA$139.99 on October 14, 2026. Those are regional expected-retail figures, not a guarantee of the price you will see at checkout. The cited official pages did not establish a current US MSRP for the SQ1, so verify the local retailer price and whether the listing is new, used or clearance stock.
Retailer inventory, shipping, taxes and bundle contents can change the effective cost. A bundle that includes film may be better value than a lower camera-only price, but compare the number of included exposures and the battery situation before deciding.
Practical limitations to understand before buying
No documented digital screen or wireless printing
The cited product information does not list a digital preview screen or wireless-printing feature for either camera. You compose through the optical viewfinder, press the shutter, and accept the physical print that ejects. If you require preview, image selection or phone connectivity, these models are not documented as providing those functions.

Automatic exposure is convenient but not fully controllable
The programmed 1/2–1/400 second shutter range and automatic exposure simplify operation, but neither camera gives you a manual exposure interface. Very dark, strongly backlit or high-contrast scenes can therefore require careful positioning and realistic expectations. The SQUARE 2’s focus ranges and filters add creative choices; they do not convert it into a manually metered camera.
Development time affects how you handle prints
Allow about 90 seconds for development. Plan where you will place a fresh print so it is not bent, covered or dropped while the image appears. At a busy event, this small handling step can be as important as the camera choice because a damaged sheet cannot be reused.
A buying checklist
- Do you want Warm/Cool/Off filters, or would you rather have no color-control decision?
- Will you use explicit Close-up, Standard and Landscape ranges, or is a combined Selfie/close-up setting sufficient?
- Is the 60 g lighter and 13.5 mm shallower SQ1 body important for your bag or wrist?
- Can you reliably obtain four AA alkaline batteries for the SQUARE 2 or two CR2 lithium batteries for the SQ1?
- Have you budgeted for separately sold Instax SQUARE film, typically 10 exposures per cartridge?
- Is the SQUARE 2’s expected regional price within your budget, and have you checked the SQ1’s current local price rather than assuming an old MSRP?
- Are you comfortable shooting without a documented digital preview or wireless-printing function?
Verdict by buyer type
For creative control
Pick the SQUARE 2. Its Warm/Cool switch and three focus ranges are the only major control differences, and they directly affect how you can make a picture before exposure.
For beginners and shared use
Pick the SQ1 when minimizing controls is more valuable than selecting a filter or distance range. Lens-twist startup, a combined Selfie/close-up mode and the built-in mirror make its basic workflow easy to explain.
Recommended Free Tools
For travel and lighter carry
Pick the SQ1 if the smaller, 390 g body is important. Pick the SQUARE 2 if the additional 60 g is acceptable in exchange for its controls.
For the same square print
Either camera is suitable. Film compatibility, 62 × 62 mm image area, automatic exposure, automatic ejection and approximately 90-second development are shared characteristics.
