The Instax Square 2 uses FUJIFILM instax SQUARE Instant Film. Instax mini and instax WIDE cartridges are different sizes and cannot be loaded into a Square camera. Each SQUARE print measures 86 × 72 mm, with a 62 × 62 mm image area, and normally develops in about 90 seconds. Correct loading, gentle handling, and cool, dry storage prevent most blank, faded, or discolored photos.

What film does the Instax Square 2 use?

Use Fujifilm instax SQUARE instant film, the square-format cartridge specified for the Instax Square 2. The cartridge contains ten exposures per pack. Buy replacement film by looking for the exact “instax SQUARE” format name; packaging labeled only “instax mini” or “instax WIDE” is not compatible.

Why mini and WIDE film will not work

Instax formats are built around different cartridge and frame dimensions. Mini film is narrower, while WIDE film is substantially larger. Their cartridges cannot be substituted for a SQUARE cartridge, and attempting to force one into the camera can damage the film compartment or leave the camera unable to eject a sheet. The Square 2 does not crop or adapt another Instax format.

The 86 × 72 mm measurement is the complete SQUARE print, including its border. The exposed picture itself is a 62 × 62 mm square, so leave enough space around subjects when composing through the viewfinder.

How Instax Square film creates a picture

Instax film uses silver-halide instant-film chemistry. When a sheet ejects, a developer-fluid pod at the edge of the print is activated. The camera’s rollers spread that fluid across the sheet, starting the chemical process that gradually reveals the image. Because the reaction continues after ejection, the print is not finished when it first leaves the camera.

How long does Instax Square film take to develop?

A SQUARE print normally develops in approximately 90 seconds. That is an estimate, not a stopwatch guarantee: ambient temperature changes the speed of the chemical reaction. A print may appear sooner in warm conditions and take longer when it is cold.

What to do while the image develops

  1. Let the print eject completely before touching it.
  2. Place it on a flat surface or hold it by the border.
  3. Keep it still while the image emerges.
  4. Do not crease, bend, or shake the print. Fujifilm specifically warns that these actions can interfere with development.
  5. Wait roughly 90 seconds, allowing extra time if the surrounding air is cold.

Shaking does not speed up Instax chemistry. Movement can spread developer unevenly, producing streaks, patches, or other defects. Avoid pressing on the image area while the print is wet inside.

Temperature and development expectations

Use the camera and film within normal room-temperature conditions when possible. If the pack has been exposed to extreme heat or cold, let it return to normal temperature before shooting. Development time varies with ambient temperature, so a cold print should not be judged as defective simply because it remains pale after a minute and a half.

Why did my Instax photo come out white or blank?

The most important cause of a completely white SQUARE frame is opening the film door after the cartridge has been loaded. The remaining sheets are light-sensitive. Fujifilm warns that opening the door exposes those sheets and can turn them white. The exposed pack may then produce blank prints even though the camera ejects them normally.

If the film door was opened accidentally

  • Close the door immediately and keep it closed.
  • Do not open it again to inspect the pack.
  • Expect that some or all remaining sheets may be fogged; the exact number depends on how much light entered.
  • Replace the pack if subsequent frames are blank or badly washed out.

Once a cartridge has been exposed to light, there is no camera setting that can restore the affected sheets. Avoid testing the camera with a valuable pack after a door-opening mistake; use a fresh, correctly loaded cartridge instead.

Other reasons a print can look pale

  • Insufficient development time: wait the full approximate 90 seconds, longer in cool conditions.
  • Cold film: allow film chilled by transport or storage to reach normal temperature before use.
  • Handling during development: bending, creasing, shaking, or pressing can disturb the developer spread.
  • Expired film: use packs before the expiration date printed on the package; aged chemistry can produce unreliable results.

A white frame caused by a light-exposed cartridge is different from a dim image that is still developing. Give a normally ejected sheet time first; if the entire frame remains blank and the door was opened, pack exposure is the stronger explanation.

How to load SQUARE film without fogging it

  1. Check that the cartridge is labeled instax SQUARE and is within its package expiration date.
  2. Open the camera’s film compartment only when you are ready to install the pack.
  3. Match the cartridge’s alignment marks with the marks inside the camera.
  4. Close the film door firmly before exposing the cartridge to light for longer than necessary.
  5. Turn on the camera and press the shutter once to eject the dark protective cover sheet.
  6. Do not reopen the film door until the pack is empty and the counter indicates no exposures remain.

The protective cover sheet is not a photograph. After it ejects, the camera is ready for the ten light-sensitive sheets in the pack.

How should unused Instax Square film be stored?

Keep unopened and partially used film cool, protected from strong light, and within the package expiration date. Fujifilm advises allowing film that has experienced extreme heat or cold to return to normal temperature before use. Sudden temperature changes can affect the chemistry and make development less predictable.

At home

  • Store packs in a cool, dry place away from direct sun, heaters, radiators, and hot vehicles.
  • Leave film in its original sealed packaging until you are ready to load it.
  • Check the printed expiration date before loading an old pack.
  • After removing a pack from a cold environment, let it warm naturally rather than applying direct heat.

On flights and while traveling

Carry Instax film in your hand luggage rather than checked baggage. Fujifilm recommends this to reduce the risk of X-ray fogging from baggage-screening equipment. Keep packs in their original packaging and avoid leaving them in a hot car or in direct sunlight during the trip.

How should finished Instax photos be stored?

Protect developed prints from strong light and keep them in a cool, dry place. Prolonged intense light can alter the appearance of the image over time. Avoid humid locations such as bathrooms, damp basements, or areas where condensation forms.

Do not store instant photos in a sealed bag. Fujifilm warns that sealed bags may cause discoloration. Use an album, box, or display method that protects the prints from light while still avoiding an airtight enclosure. Keep the image surface clean and do not stack prints while they are still developing.

Common handling problems and fixes

Symptom Likely cause What to do
Entire frame is white Film door opened after loading; remaining sheets were exposed Close the door, finish the pack if possible, then replace the light-exposed cartridge
Image is faint immediately after ejection Normal early stage of development or cold conditions Keep the print flat and still for about 90 seconds or longer
Streaks or uneven patches Print was shaken, bent, creased, or pressed Handle only by the border and leave future prints undisturbed
Pack will not eject correctly Wrong format cartridge or misaligned loading Do not force it; confirm the SQUARE label and alignment marks
Colors look poor after storage Strong light, heat, moisture, or sealed-bag storage Move finished prints to a cool, dry, shaded, non-airtight storage method

Battery and pack planning for regular shooting

Fujifilm’s current Square 2 specifications estimate approximately 30 ten-exposure SQUARE film packs per set of new AA batteries. That is a camera-capacity estimate, not a guaranteed number of packs: flash use, temperature, shooting habits, and battery condition can change the result. Plan around the estimate rather than treating it as a fixed service interval, and carry spare AA batteries for travel or extended events.
