You need to install PostgreSQL on your computer only if you want to run a database server locally. If your course, workplace, or project already provides a hosted database, you may only need a client to connect to it. For a local setup, download PostgreSQL from the official project site and choose the installer or package for your operating system.

Do you need to install PostgreSQL on your computer?

Install a local PostgreSQL server if you want to learn by creating databases on your own machine, or if an application you are developing needs a local database. You may not need one if you have access to a database hosted elsewhere and your task is only to connect to it. Whether a hosted database is available depends on your course or project.

A PostgreSQL server accepts connections from client applications. The official server setup and operation documentation explains server setup, client connections, and security.

How do I install PostgreSQL?

  1. Open the official PostgreSQL downloads page and select your operating system.

  2. Choose a binary installer or operating-system package when one is available for your system. PostgreSQL recommends binary packages for ordinary users; building from source is mainly for people developing PostgreSQL or its extensions. See the binary installation documentation.

  3. Follow the instructions for the selected installer or package. Options, supported systems, and setup steps differ by operating system and package.

  4. After installation, use that package’s instructions to start the server and connect a client. Do not assume a single startup command works for every installation.

How to install PostgreSQL on Windows

The official Windows installers page links to an EDB-certified graphical installer. It includes the PostgreSQL server, pgAdmin, and StackBuilder. The installer is hosted by EDB, not on PostgreSQL community servers. Check the page for current platform support, then follow the installer’s prompts and its operating-system-specific guidance for starting and connecting to the server.

How to install PostgreSQL on macOS

The official macOS packages page lists several routes: the EDB installer, Postgres.app, Homebrew, MacPorts, and Fink. Choose according to whether you prefer a graphical app or package-manager workflow.

Postgres.app

Postgres.app is a native menu-bar app. Opening it starts a server ready for connections; closing it stops the server. This suits a setup where you want the server to run while the app is open.

Installer or package manager

The EDB installer includes the server, pgAdmin, and StackBuilder. If you use Homebrew, MacPorts, or Fink, follow the current instructions on the official macOS page. Package names and version-specific commands can change, so verify them there rather than relying on an old example.

How to install PostgreSQL on Linux

When PostgreSQL is available through your Linux distribution, use its package-management instructions. The project recommends this route because it integrates with system management, including automatic patching. Visit the official Linux downloads page, select your distribution, and follow its current instructions; commands vary by distribution.

Do you need pgAdmin to use PostgreSQL?

No. pgAdmin is a graphical management tool, not the PostgreSQL server itself. The EDB-certified installer linked from the official Windows and macOS pages includes pgAdmin, but you can use other clients to connect to a PostgreSQL server. If you only need to connect to a hosted database, you may need a client rather than a local server; the available connection details depend on the database provider or project.

How do you start PostgreSQL after installing it?

There is no universal startup step: packaged installers and operating-system integrations can manage the server differently. Postgres.app starts its server when opened and stops it when closed. For other installations, follow the selected package’s instructions and the official server setup and operation guide, which covers database-cluster creation, starting and stopping the server, connections, and security.
