Desktop Visio is not included automatically with a Microsoft 365 or Office 365 subscription. You need either Visio Plan 2 or a supported one-time-purchase edition such as Visio Standard or Professional. Visio Plan 1 provides Visio for the web only and does not install the Windows desktop application.
This guide covers the current installation paths for home users, Microsoft 365 administrators, and organizations deploying Visio with the Office Deployment Tool.
Check that your license includes desktop Visio
Before downloading anything, confirm which license you have:
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches| License | Desktop Visio | Where it runs |
|---|---|---|
| Visio Plan 1 | No | Visio for the web |
| Visio Plan 2 | Yes | Windows desktop and web |
| Visio Standard or Professional 2024, 2021, 2019, or 2016 | Yes, if purchased | Windows desktop |
| Microsoft 365 Business Basic, Office 365 E1, Office 365 A1 | No desktop Visio | Web apps only, where included |
Visio desktop is a Windows installation. Microsoft does not support Project or Visio subscriptions on macOS. A Chromebook also cannot run the Windows desktop application. On those devices, use Visio for the web if your plan provides it.

Install Visio Plan 2 on a Windows PC
You must sign in with the work or school account associated with the Visio Plan 2 license. A personal Microsoft account will not show an organization’s Visio subscription.
- Open microsoft365.com and select Sign in.
- Enter the work or school account that has Visio Plan 2 assigned to it.
- On the Microsoft 365 home page, select Install apps. If it is not visible, select Apps in the left navigation pane and then choose Install apps.
- Open the app-selection dropdown and select Visio.
- Choose the installer language and select Install.
- When the download finishes, select Open in Edge or Chrome. Alternatively, open the downloaded
OfficeSetup.exefile from your Downloads folder. - At the User Account Control prompt, “Do you want to allow this app to make changes to your device?”, select Yes. You need local administrator permissions.
- Wait for the installer to finish. The installation is complete when Microsoft displays “You’re all set!”.
Open the Start menu, type Visio, and launch the application. Sign in if prompted, using the account that owns the Plan 2 license.
An alternative portal path for organization users
Microsoft’s deployment documentation also uses the newer Microsoft 365 apps portal:
- Go to m365.cloud.microsoft/apps and sign in with the licensed work or school account.
- Select Install apps, then Microsoft 365 apps.
- Open the portal’s Apps & devices area.
- Select Install Visio and run the downloaded installer.
The two portal routes lead to the same type of Plan 2 desktop installation. They are not different Visio editions.
Install a one-time-purchase Visio license
Use this method for a retail product key for Visio Standard or Professional. Do not use your work account if the purchase belongs to a personal Microsoft account.
- Go to office.com/setup.
- Sign in with an existing Microsoft account, or create one.
- Enter the Visio product key and complete the redemption process.
- Go to microsoft365.com, select Sign in, and use the same Microsoft account.
- Select Install Office.
- When redirected to the Microsoft account portal, open Subscriptions.
- Find Visio and select Install.
- For a different language or architecture, select Other options, choose the language and either 32-bit or 64-bit, then select Install.
If a work account is already active in the browser, sign out before redeeming or installing the personal license. An InPrivate or incognito window is often the quickest way to keep the two accounts separate.

Deploy Visio centrally with the Office Deployment Tool
Administrators can assign licenses and deploy Visio through Microsoft Intune, another software-distribution system, or the Office Deployment Tool (ODT). The ODT installs the Click-to-Run subscription product identified as VisioProRetail.
1. Assign the license
In the Microsoft 365 admin center:
- Go to Billing > Licenses.
- Select the Visio product.
- Select Assign licenses.
- In the right-hand panel, search for and select the user or group.
- Use Turn apps and services on or off if you need to control individual services.
- Select Assign, then close the panel.
You can also assign it to one user through Users > Active users > select the user > Licenses and Apps. Expand Licenses, select the Visio license, and select Save changes.
Assignment can fail if there are no unallocated licenses, the user has conflicting license plans or services, or the account has no valid usage location. Check the admin center’s Errors & Issues area when an assignment does not complete.
2. Create an ODT configuration
Microsoft recommends creating the XML file with the Office Customization Tool. For a Visio-only configuration, leave the Office Suite field empty and choose the required Visio version in the Visio dropdown.
A minimal configuration for Visio Plan 2 looks like this:
<Configuration>
<Add OfficeClientEdition="64" Channel="Current">
<Product ID="VisioProRetail">
<Language ID="en-us" />
</Product>
</Add>
</Configuration>
Save it as installconfig.xml in the same folder as the ODT’s setup.exe. The example installs the 64-bit English version from the Current update channel.

3. Download and install
Open an elevated Command Prompt in the ODT folder and run:
setup.exe /download downloadconfig.xml
That command downloads the installation files defined by downloadconfig.xml. To install using the downloaded files, run:
setup.exe /configure installconfig.xml
For a direct CDN installation, you can use the configuration with the /configure command without first maintaining a local source folder, provided the device can reach Microsoft’s content-delivery network. A successful ODT installation reports:
Products configured successfully.
ODT logs are written to the Windows %temp% folder. If setup.exe and the XML file are stored on a network share, use the complete network path for both. The command must still run with local administrator permissions.
Important compatibility requirements
Match the Office architecture
Visio and Microsoft 365 Apps must use the same architecture. If Office is 32-bit, install 32-bit Visio; if Office is 64-bit, install 64-bit Visio. A mixed 32-bit/64-bit installation is unsupported and normally fails.
The valid ODT values are:
OfficeClientEdition="32"OfficeClientEdition="64"
To check the installed Office architecture, open Word or Excel and go to File > Account > About Word or About Excel. The dialog identifies whether the installation is 32-bit or 64-bit.
Rank #4
If no architecture is specified for a new ODT deployment, Microsoft normally selects 64-bit. It selects 32-bit on 32-bit Windows or on devices with less than 4 GB of RAM. For Arm-based devices, use 64-bit Microsoft 365 Apps on Windows 11 or later.

Watch for existing MSI installations
Older MSI-based Office, Project, or Visio installations can conflict with a Click-to-Run deployment. Microsoft recommends using the ODT RemoveMSI element when replacing MSI-based Office products. Do not remove an existing installation blindly on a managed computer: confirm which Office programs and license types the user still needs.
Some combinations of Office, Project, and Visio cannot coexist. If setup reports an incompatible product, inventory the existing Click-to-Run and MSI installations before retrying.
Choose a supported language
Visio does not support every Microsoft 365 language. Microsoft specifically lists English (United Kingdom), French (Canada), and Spanish (Mexico) among unsupported Visio languages. An unsupported language ID in the XML can cause setup to fail. Choose a Visio-supported language in the Office Customization Tool rather than copying a language ID from an unrelated Office deployment.
Adding Visio to an existing Microsoft 365 Apps installation
If the computer already has Microsoft 365 Apps, you can use Version="MatchInstalled" to add Visio without updating Office to a newer version. This requires an existing Click-to-Run product and a Channel attribute. It cannot be used with the ODT /download switch.
Recommended Free Tools
Use this option when keeping Office on its currently approved build is more important than receiving the newest available build during the Visio installation. The architecture still has to match the existing Office installation.

Fix the most common installation problems
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Visio is missing from the app dropdown | The signed-in user does not have Visio Plan 2 | Have an administrator assign the license, then sign out and back in. |
| No Install button after purchasing a subscription | Provisioning has not completed, or no license was assigned | Wait briefly, sign out, sign back in, and verify the assignment in the admin center. |
| The Install button is gray | The subscription may be expired | Check the subscription status and billing account. |
| A personal purchase does not appear | The browser is signed in with a work or school account | Sign out or use an InPrivate/incognito window, then use the Microsoft account tied to the purchase. |
| Setup reports an architecture conflict | Office and Visio are 32-bit/64-bit mismatched | Use the same architecture, or plan a supported Office reinstall. |
| The installation hangs | Network, firewall, antivirus, or CDN access problem | Try Microsoft’s offline installer route or run ODT from a local source. |
| Visio shows “Unlicensed Product” after a plan change | The old Office installation is tied to the previous plan | Install the version associated with the new plan and uninstall the old version if required. |
Also check activation limits. A user can activate Office on up to five computers. Deactivating an old computer frees an activation but does not uninstall Office from that device.
FAQ
Does Office 365 include Visio?
No. Visio is sold separately. Visio Plan 2 includes the Windows desktop application, while Visio Plan 1 is web-only.
Can I install Visio on a Mac?
Not the supported desktop Visio application. Microsoft states that Project and Visio subscriptions are not supported on Mac. Use Visio for the web instead.

One-click scans. No signup required.
Which account should I use to install Visio Plan 2?
Use the work or school account to which the organization assigned Visio Plan 2. Use a personal Microsoft account only for a one-time-purchase Visio license redeemed through office.com/setup.
Why is Visio not listed under Install apps?
The account probably does not have Visio Plan 2 assigned, or the license has not finished provisioning. Ask the Microsoft 365 administrator to verify the assignment.
Can Visio and Microsoft 365 Apps use different bit versions?
No. They must use the same 32-bit or 64-bit architecture. A mismatch causes the Click-to-Run installation to fail.
What is the ODT product ID for Visio Plan 2?
The product ID is VisioProRetail.
The Bottom Line
For a licensed Visio Plan 2 user, the normal route is microsoft365.com > Install apps > Visio > Install, followed by opening OfficeSetup.exe and approving the administrator prompt. If Visio is absent from the list, the problem is usually licensing or account selection—not a missing download link. One-time-purchase editions use office.com/setup first, while organizations can assign licenses and deploy VisioProRetail with the Office Deployment Tool.
