To install a downloaded Debian package on Ubuntu or Debian, open a terminal in the folder containing the file and run sudo apt install ./package-name.deb. Replace the filename with the actual name. The ./ tells APT to use a local file; review the proposed package changes before confirming.

Install a local .deb file with APT

  1. Open a terminal in the directory containing the downloaded file. If you are unsure of its exact name, list the files in the directory and copy the package filename.

  2. Run sudo apt install ./package-name.deb, replacing package-name.deb with your file’s name. For a file in another directory, give its full path, such as sudo apt install /path/to/package-name.deb.

  3. Read APT’s proposed transaction, including the packages it will install, upgrade, or remove. Continue only if the changes make sense; enter N to cancel.

APT can obtain and install dependencies from your configured repositories when compatible packages are available there. It cannot guarantee that every dependency will be available or resolvable. Ubuntu’s package-management documentation and Debian’s APT documentation describe installing local package files this way.

Choose APT or dpkg

Tool Example What it does Limitation
APT sudo apt install ./package-name.deb Installs a local package and attempts to resolve dependencies from configured repositories. Resolution depends on compatible packages being available in those repositories.
dpkg sudo dpkg -i ./package-name.deb Installs a local package archive directly. Does not automatically download and install missing dependencies.

For a straightforward installation, start with APT. Use dpkg -i when you specifically need the lower-level package operation or are following a process that handles dependencies separately. Ubuntu’s package-management guide distinguishes dpkg’s direct package operation from APT’s higher-level dependency handling.

Understand the confirmation prompt

APT shows a summary of the planned transaction and asks whether to proceed. Check the list for unexpected removals or other changes; cancel rather than accepting a plan you do not understand. Ubuntu’s command-line tutorial explains the distinction between required dependencies (Depends), strongly useful but not strictly required recommendations (Recommends), and optional suggestions (Suggests). A program may not have every optional enhancement if those packages are not installed.

Check the package’s source before installing

The .deb extension identifies a package format, not a trustworthy publisher. Download the file from the software publisher or another source you trust. If the publisher supplies a signature or checksum procedure, follow it and obtain the expected value through an independently trusted channel.

APT authenticates packages obtained through configured repositories by validating signed repository metadata and package hashes. That protection does not, by itself, prove that an arbitrary file downloaded separately is safe just because it is installed with apt install ./file.deb. Debian explains the repository authentication chain in its package-authentication guide; the dpkg-deb manual notes that binary packages are usually not individually signed and that higher-level APT supports repository authentication.

Ubuntu also cautions that non-standard software sources can make a system unstable or non-functional. Do not bypass a trust warning or add a repository key unless you understand who controls the source and what packages that trust will cover.

If APT cannot resolve dependencies

Read the full error output first: it may name an unavailable dependency or a version conflict. APT can resolve dependencies only when compatible packages are available from the configured repositories; otherwise, you may need to obtain a compatible package from its publisher or resolve the conflict through a deliberate package-management plan. Do not guess replacement package names.

If the repository package index may be stale, refresh it and retry the install:

sudo apt update
sudo apt install ./package-name.deb

apt update refreshes local repository metadata; it is not a system upgrade and is not a routine prerequisite for every local-file installation. Ubuntu documents the command in its package-management guide.

Check the result and investigate package state

Ubuntu’s software-installation tutorial covers these package inspection commands and the dpkg log.

Use a different command for scripts

APT’s apt command is intended for interactive use. For non-interactive scripts, Ubuntu recommends apt-get; check the syntax and behavior against the target system’s release before automating. See Ubuntu’s package-management documentation.
