Use Not Interested to reduce unwanted topics and similar suggested posts. Use Mute to hide one account you follow without unfollowing it. Not Interested sends Instagram negative feedback about the post itself; Mute changes that account’s visibility for you. Neither is a permanent, all-suggestions-off switch.
Instagram’s ranking system combines many interests and actions, so results are adaptive rather than guaranteed. For a broader cleanup, combine Not Interested with Hidden Words or the Following feed; use the 30-day snooze when you only need a temporary break from suggested posts.
What the two controls actually target
Not Interested is post-level recommendation feedback
Not Interested applies to the individual post you are viewing. Meta’s 2022 product announcement describes the immediate effect precisely: “By tapping Not Interested, it removes the post from your feed immediately, and we’ll suggest fewer posts like it in the future.” The important phrase is fewer posts like it, not “no posts like it ever again.”

1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsThe signal is about the content’s topic, format or other characteristics, so it can influence recommendations from accounts you do not follow. It is the more appropriate control when several unrelated accounts keep showing material you do not want in Explore, Reels or other recommendation areas.
#1 Best Overall
Mute is an account-level visibility setting
Mute is designed for a followed account. Instagram’s official explanation, quoted by Boing Boing in 2021, says: “You can mute an account if you’d like to stop seeing what they share, but are hesitant about unfollowing them.” Muting changes what you see from that account while preserving the follow relationship.
Mute is therefore a narrow filter, not a documented way to tell Instagram that you dislike an entire subject. If five different accounts post the same unwanted topic, muting one account does not address the other four or establish a topic-wide preference.
Which one reduces recommendations more effectively?
For recommendation relevance, Not Interested is the stronger of the two. It explicitly supplies negative feedback about a recommendation and is intended to produce fewer similar suggestions. Mute is stronger for a different problem: seeing content from one particular account.
| Control | Primary target | What changes | Best use | What it does not establish |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Not Interested | A selected recommended post | The post is removed immediately and Instagram says it will suggest fewer similar posts | Reducing a topic or pattern that appears across recommendations | A permanent block on every related post |
| Mute | One account you follow | That account’s content is hidden from your view while you remain connected | Taking a quiet break from one person or publication without unfollowing | A topic-wide change to Explore, Reels or other recommendation surfaces |
| Hidden Words | Specified words or phrases | Content containing those terms can be hidden where the feature applies | Recurring terms in recommendation captions or hashtags | A guarantee that every visual or indirectly related post is removed |
| Following feed | The feed surface | Shows followed accounts chronologically and contains no suggested posts in that view | Browsing only accounts you chose to follow | Changing what appears when you return to other recommendation surfaces |
| Snooze suggested posts | Suggested posts temporarily | Pauses suggested posts for 30 days | A short-term pause rather than permanent preference training | A lasting change after the 30-day period |
Choose the control by your goal
- You dislike a subject appearing from many accounts: choose Not Interested on representative posts. Add relevant terms to Hidden Words if the same words or hashtags recur.
- You want to keep following one account but stop seeing it: choose Mute on that account. This preserves the follow relationship.
- You want a feed containing only followed accounts: switch to the Following feed. Meta describes it as chronological and free of suggested posts.
- You need a temporary break from suggestions: use Snooze suggested posts, which Meta documents as a 30-day pause.
- You want all recommendations gone permanently: neither Not Interested nor Mute is documented as a permanent, platform-wide off switch. Use the Following feed when you want to browse without suggestions.
How to use Not Interested
From a recommended post
- Open the suggested post in your Instagram feed, Explore results or another recommendation surface.
- Open the post’s options menu, usually the three-dot button.
- Select Not interested. Instagram removes that post from the feed immediately.
- Continue marking genuinely unwanted examples rather than selecting the option indiscriminately. Each selection is feedback about the kind of content you do not want recommended.
Menu wording and placement can vary by app version, account and region. If the option is not visible in the first menu, look for a recommendation or “why you’re seeing this” submenu before assuming the feature is unavailable.
What to expect afterward
The documented promise is a reduction in similar suggestions, not elimination. Instagram can still show related material because its ranking uses multiple interests and actions. A single selection may be outweighed by other behavior, such as repeatedly watching, saving, sharing or searching for related posts. The effect is best understood as a preference signal that competes with other signals over time.
How to mute an account without unfollowing
From the account’s post
- Open a post from the account you still want to follow.
- Open the post options menu.
- Choose the account-level Mute option and select the content types Instagram presents on your version of the app.
From the account profile
- Open the profile of the account.
- Tap Following (or the equivalent relationship button).
- Select Mute, then set the available visibility switches.
The exact labels and available switches can change with app releases and regional rollouts. The defining result is unchanged: you remain a follower, but muted content is omitted from your view. Because Mute is tied to an account, it is efficient when the source is one account and inefficient when the same subject comes from many sources.
Use Hidden Words for recurring terms
When unwanted recommendations repeatedly contain identifiable words or phrases in captions or hashtags, Hidden Words is a more targeted companion to Not Interested. Meta describes Hidden Words as a way to hide content containing specified words or phrases. Add the terms that actually recur, including common hashtag forms, and review the resulting filter if your app provides a preview or management screen.

A post can be unwanted without containing your chosen term, and a term can appear in a post you would otherwise want to see. Use both only when their scopes match your objective.
Browse without suggestions using Following
Meta describes the Following feed as chronological and limited to accounts you follow, with no suggested posts in that view. It is the clearest way to read only selected accounts without asking the recommendation system to change its ranking.
- From Instagram’s home area, open the feed selector or Instagram wordmark menu, depending on your app version.
- Choose Following.
- Return to this view whenever you want a chronological, followed-accounts-only session.
This is a view choice rather than a global preference reset. Explore, Reels and the default home feed can still contain recommendations when you leave the Following view.

Pause suggested posts for 30 days
Snooze suggested posts is useful when you want a defined break, such as during an event or a period when you do not want algorithmic discovery. Meta documents a 30-day snooze. Look for the snooze control in the suggested-post options menu and confirm the pause. At the end of the 30 days, suggested posts can return; snooze should not be treated as permanent training or a replacement for account-level Mute.
Why Not Interested may not remove every similar post
Recommendations combine several signals
Instagram personalizes recommendations from content and actions that indicate interest. Not Interested adds a negative signal, but it is one input among many. Watching a related Reel to the end, opening a profile, searching for a term or sharing a post can communicate interest that offsets a previous negative selection.
Similarity is broader than a single keyword
Two posts can be classified as similar because of visual style, audio, creator category, audience behavior or topic associations, not just identical words. Conversely, a post that looks similar to you may not be grouped with the original by Instagram. That is why the documented outcome is probabilistic: fewer similar suggestions, with no stated percentage or fixed timetable.
Recommendations appear in several surfaces
Feed suggestions, Explore results and Reels are separate experiences even though they are personalized by the same service. Mute narrows one account’s visibility; it is not documented as a control that removes a topic from every surface. Not Interested is broader in intent, but Meta does not promise that one selection synchronizes a permanent block across all surfaces.
What neither setting does
- Neither guarantees a permanent topic block. Not Interested promises fewer similar posts, and Mute hides a selected account’s content.
- Mute is not a general recommendation reset. It addresses the muted account, not every account discussing the same subject.
- Neither setting is documented as an advertising control. The cited product descriptions do not establish that either option removes advertisements.
- Neither changes your follow relationship in the way unfollowing does. Mute is specifically intended for people who want to remain connected while seeing less from an account.
Practical combinations for common situations
One account posts too often
Mute that account. This solves the visibility problem without the social and subscription consequences of unfollowing. If unrelated accounts also produce unwanted material, handle those posts separately with Not Interested rather than muting every source.

A topic has spread across recommendations
Mark several representative posts Not Interested, then add distinctive recurring words or hashtags to Hidden Words. Avoid engaging with the topic while you are trying to reduce it, because other actions can provide competing interest signals.
You want a quiet reading session
Open the Following feed. It provides chronological posts from followed accounts and no suggested posts in that view, without requiring you to retrain recommendations.
You are overwhelmed temporarily
Use the 30-day snooze. When the pause expires, decide whether the underlying issue is a single account, a recurring term or a broader recommendation pattern and choose Mute, Hidden Words or Not Interested accordingly.
Troubleshoot when unwanted recommendations continue
- Confirm the scope of the action. If you muted one account, check whether the remaining posts come from other accounts. That indicates an account-source problem was treated as a topic problem, or vice versa.
- Use Not Interested on the actual recommended posts. Muting an account does not communicate that the topic itself is unwanted.
- Review your recent actions. Searches, watches, saves, shares and profile visits can act as interest signals. Stop interacting with the unwanted subject while its ranking adjusts.
- Add recurring text to Hidden Words. This is useful when captions or hashtags repeat recognizable terms.
- Switch to Following for immediate control. It removes suggested posts from that viewing session without waiting for ranking changes.
- Use snooze for a defined pause. Remember that the documented duration is 30 days, after which suggestions may resume.
- Check the app interface. Instagram changes menu labels and rolls features out by account and region. Update the app and look in the post’s options menu, feed selector and account’s Following menu if a control has moved.
Privacy and relationship questions
Will an account know that you muted it?
Instagram’s quoted explanation presents Mute as a way to stop seeing an account while remaining hesitant about unfollowing. The cited material does not state that Instagram sends the account a mute notification. Because notification behavior and interface details can change, check the current app before relying on Mute for a sensitive situation.

How to decide in five seconds
- Ask whether the unwanted material comes from one account or many accounts.
- For one account you still want to follow, choose Mute.
- For a topic or recommendation pattern across accounts, choose Not Interested.
- If repeated words or hashtags identify the material, add Hidden Words.
- If you want no suggestions during a browsing session, open Following; if you want a temporary pause, use the 30-day snooze.
That division of labor matches the controls’ documented scopes: Not Interested trains recommendation relevance, while Mute filters one account’s visibility.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I turn off all Instagram suggested posts permanently?
The cited Instagram descriptions do not document a permanent, platform-wide switch that removes every suggested post. The Following feed provides a chronological view of followed accounts without suggested posts, and Snooze suggested posts pauses suggestions for 30 days.
Does muting an account retrain Instagram’s recommendations about that topic?
Mute is documented as an account-level way to stop seeing what one account shares while continuing to follow it. It is not documented as topic-wide recommendation feedback; use Not Interested for unwanted recommendation patterns.
Does Not Interested block a topic forever?
No. Meta’s wording promises that Instagram will suggest fewer posts like the selected one. It does not promise a permanent block, a fixed reduction or removal from every recommendation surface.
Do these controls remove advertisements?
The cited product descriptions do not establish that Not Interested or Mute removes advertisements. Treat them as recommendation and account-visibility controls, not ad controls.
