To remove a message you sent from the shared Instagram chat, use Unsend on that specific message. Deleting the conversation from your inbox is different: it removes it from your view and should not be treated as deleting it for the other person.
How to unsend a message on Instagram
- Open the Instagram conversation containing the message.
- Select the specific message you sent and choose Unsend, if that action is available in your current app.
- Check the action label before confirming. Taps and labels can vary by app version, and exact current steps have not been verified for every platform.
Instagram Help Center wording reproduced in a Reddit discussion says that after a message is unsent, it is no longer visible to people included in the chat. The same wording warns that participants may already have seen it. Read the reproduced guidance in the Reddit discussion (April 20, 2025). The official Help Center page was not directly accessible when this guidance was checked, so the quotation is attributed through that reproduction.
Unsend versus deleting a conversation

What unsending cannot guarantee
- That nobody saw the message: a participant may have read it before you unsent it.
- That all copies are gone: the available guidance addresses visibility in the chat, not every device, notification, backup, or Instagram system.
- Whether the other person is notified: available explanations conflict, so there is no reliable basis here to promise either an alert or no alert.
- That an entire conversation can be erased for everyone: no reliable confirmation of a bulk or whole-chat removal method is established here. The supported guidance concerns unsending an individual sent message.
- A particular deadline: no verified time limit is established here; do not rely on unsourced claims about an unsend window.
Choosing the right action
If you want to remove one message you sent from the shared chat, look for Unsend on that message. If you only want to clear a conversation from your own inbox, use the conversation-deletion action—but do not expect it to remove the other participant’s copy. Neither action can reverse something the other person has already seen.
