Updated August 7, 2026: Instagram still does not offer a universal Download audio or MP3 button for every Reel. The app’s official audio workflow is designed to save a sound inside Instagram and reuse it—not export it as a file.
If you need an actual audio file, you have two practical options: download a Reel you are authorized to access and extract its audio, or screen-record the Reel and convert the recording. The best method depends on whether you need the original media quality or simply a usable copy for personal editing.
What Instagram’s “Save Audio” button actually does
Open a Reel and tap the audio name shown near the bottom of the screen. On the audio page, tap Save Audio. This saves the sound to your Instagram account so you can find it later while creating a Reel. The same page may also show Use Audio.
It does not create an MP3 in your phone’s Files, Photos, or Downloads folder. Meta documents Reels audio as something you can use through Instagram’s Audio tool, including original audio from another creator or audio from Instagram’s music library. Save Audio may not appear if the sound has been removed, restricted, made unavailable in your region, or is otherwise not reusable. Meta also says original audio from a feed video cannot be used unless the video is remixed.
Method 1: Save the sound inside Instagram
Use this method when you want to reuse the audio in another Reel, not when you need a standalone audio file.
- Open Instagram and play the Reel.
- Tap the Reel’s audio name.
- Tap Save Audio on the audio page.
- When creating a Reel later, open the audio picker and choose the saved-audio collection, or return to the audio page and tap Use Audio.
Instagram’s labels can vary slightly between Android and iPhone versions, but the important distinction remains the same: this is an Instagram save, not a download.
When this is the right choice
- You want to make your own Reel with the same Instagram sound.
- You do not need an MP3 or WAV file.
- You want Instagram to handle music licensing and audio availability.
Method 2: Download the Reel and extract the audio
This produces an audio file from the Reel’s delivered media. It is the best computer-based method when you have permission to access and use the Reel.
First check whether the Reel is downloadable
Instagram says Reels from public accounts can be downloaded unless downloads have been disabled for the account or that individual Reel. Private-account Reels are visible only to approved followers, so extraction is not reliably available. A public Reel can also contain licensed music that is muted, removed, or unavailable in some locations.

Instagram’s current settings labels and locations can change, so do not assume that every public Reel has a download option. Meta’s explanation of Reel downloads is available in its Reels download help page.
Use yt-dlp
yt-dlp supports Instagram, although its documentation warns that extractors are not guaranteed to keep working when a website changes. Install yt-dlp and FFmpeg first. The FFmpeg installation must include the ffmpeg and ffprobe binaries; installing a Python package named ffmpeg alone is not enough.

Check the URL before downloading:
yt-dlp -F "https://www.instagram.com/reel/REEL_ID/"The -F option lists formats that yt-dlp can see. If it reports no usable formats, the Reel may require a login, be private, be unavailable, or be blocked by a changed Instagram delivery method.
To download the Reel and convert it to MP3:
yt-dlp -x --audio-format mp3 "https://www.instagram.com/reel/REEL_ID/"Here, -x means extract audio and --audio-format mp3 selects MP3 output. yt-dlp also supports formats such as m4a, wav, flac, opus, and aac.
If the Reel is visible only when you are logged in, you can pass cookies from an authorized browser session:

yt-dlp --cookies-from-browser chrome -x --audio-format mp3 "https://www.instagram.com/reel/REEL_ID/"Replace chrome with the browser you use, such as firefox, safari, edge, opera, or brave. Do not use someone else’s account or attempt to bypass access restrictions.

If you already have reel.mp4, use FFmpeg rather than changing the extension:
ffmpeg -i "reel.mp4" -vn -c:a libmp3lame "reel-audio.mp3"-i identifies the input, -vn removes video from the output, and libmp3lame encodes the audio as MP3. Renaming reel.mp4 to reel.mp3 does not convert the file and will not make it playable as an MP3.
Typical yt-dlp and FFmpeg errors

Method 3: Screen-record the Reel, then extract the audio
Screen recording is a fallback when you cannot download the Reel directly. It captures playback rather than the original audio stream, so quality may be lower and notifications, pauses, interface sounds, or volume changes can be included.
iPhone or iPad
- Swipe down from the top-right corner to open Control Center.
- Tap the gray Record button and wait for the three-second countdown.
- Close Control Center and play the Reel from the beginning.
- When finished, tap the screen-recording indicator at the top of the display and tap Stop. You can also open Control Center and tap the red Record button.
- Find the recording in Photos → Library.
Apple notes that screen recording can capture sound, but some apps may block audio or video recording. Screen recording also cannot run at the same time as screen mirroring. See Apple’s screen-recording instructions.

Android
- Swipe down twice from the top of the screen.
- Tap Screen record. If it is not visible, swipe right or tap Edit and add it to Quick Settings.
- Choose the audio option. Select device or internal audio when your phone offers it; microphone audio can include room noise.
- Tap Start, then play the Reel.
- Swipe down and tap the Screen recorder notification to stop.
- On supported devices, find the recording under Photos → Collections → On this device → Movies.
Android menus differ by manufacturer. Google’s instructions apply to supported Android devices, including Pixel phones running Android 11 or later; see Google’s screen-recording guide.
Convert the recording to MP3
Transfer the recording to a computer and run:
ffmpeg -i "Screen Recording.mov" -vn -c:a libmp3lame "reel-audio.mp3"For an Android recording, replace the input filename with the actual file, such as Screen recording.mp4.
If the recording is silent
- Confirm that device or internal audio was enabled before starting.
- Make sure the phone is not muted and that sound is routed to the intended speaker or headphones.
- Disconnect Bluetooth temporarily if audio is being sent to another device.
- Try the recording without microphone capture if the device provides separate audio choices.
- Remember that Instagram or the operating system may block capture of protected playback.

Use downloaded or extracted audio only when you have the necessary permission. Saving a sound for use within Instagram does not automatically give you permission to redistribute the music or publish it elsewhere.

Does Instagram have an official Download Audio button?
No—not universally. Instagram provides Save Audio and Use Audio for Reels, while a direct audio-file export is not consistently available.
Where does Save Audio go on Instagram?
It is saved inside Instagram’s audio collection for use when creating another Reel. It does not appear as an MP3 in Files, Photos, or Downloads.

Can I download audio from every Reel?
No. Public-account downloads can be disabled, private-account access is restricted, and licensed audio may be muted, removed, or unavailable in a particular region.
Why does yt-dlp say there are no formats?
The Reel may be private, require an authenticated session, be unavailable, be rate-limited, or use a delivery format that the current extractor cannot read. Update yt-dlp and test the URL with yt-dlp -F.
Can I turn an MP4 into an MP3 by renaming it?
No. The extension does not change the media format. Use yt-dlp’s audio extraction options or convert the file with FFmpeg.
Why is my screen recording silent?
Internal audio may not have been selected, the phone may be muted, Bluetooth may be handling the output, or Instagram or the device may block recording. Apple also warns that some apps prevent audio or video capture.

Save Audio is the safest official option when your goal is to reuse a sound in Instagram, but it is not an audio download. For an actual MP3, download an accessible Reel with yt-dlp and extract it with FFmpeg. If that is not possible, screen-record the playback and convert the recording—provided the device and app allow capture and you have permission to use the result.
