A private Instagram account is only one layer of protection. Before accepting an unfamiliar follower or replying to a stranger, review follower approval, message requests, tags and mentions, Hidden Words, Restrict, blocking, and login security separately. Each control addresses a different risk, and none proves that an accepted follower is trustworthy or makes contact impossible.
What a private account protects—and what it does not
Set the account to private if posts and stories should be limited to people you approve. Singapore’s Online Safety Commission recommends private accounts so only approved followers can see and interact with protected content (Staying Safe on Instagram). Review the follower list as part of the same task: an account that was acceptable months ago may no longer be one you want to keep.
Private status is an audience gate, not an identity check. Approval confirms only that you allowed a profile to follow you; it does not establish who operates the profile, whether the person is honest, or what they may do with information they can see. Some profile details can remain visible even when posts are protected, so avoid treating the private badge as total invisibility.

Use the current Instagram app’s privacy settings and search for the setting by name rather than relying on a fixed tap sequence. Labels and eligibility can change with app version, account type, age and location. A practical audit is:

- Confirm whether the account is private and remove followers you no longer recognize or trust.
- Review message-request categories and story-reply permissions independently of account privacy.
- Narrow who can tag or mention the account, and turn on manual approval if the option appears.
- Configure Hidden Words and comment controls for unwanted language or requests.
- Choose Restrict for a quiet boundary or blocking for a hard stop.
- Turn on two-factor authentication, login-request alerts and current recovery details.
Use the controls as a layered system

1. Confirm privacy and audit followers
Check the account audience
In the app, open the privacy controls and look for the account-privacy setting. If the goal is to keep posts and stories for an approved audience, choose private status and confirm the change. The exact screen name may differ by version, so use Instagram’s settings search for “private account” or “account privacy” if you do not see it immediately.
Review the list, not just the switch
Open the follower list and inspect unfamiliar names, recently changed usernames, empty profiles, copied biographies and accounts that have no credible connection to you. Remove an account when you are not comfortable with its access. Do this periodically rather than only when a stranger sends a message. Removing a follower changes access to protected content; it does not establish that the account cannot find you by another route.
Set expectations for approved followers
Tell children and other household users that “approved” is not the same as “known.” A person can present a convincing profile, use another person’s photograph or operate several accounts. Avoid sharing addresses, school or work schedules, travel plans, private contact details or other information merely because a follower has been accepted.
2. Separate message requests from account privacy
Why a private account can still receive requests
Account privacy controls who can see protected content after approval. Message delivery is a separate decision. If bots or unfamiliar people are still sending requests, find the message-request and story-reply controls and review each category. Depending on the current app, you may be able to allow, limit or disable requests from particular groups, and choose where permitted requests are delivered.
Do not apply teen defaults to every adult account
Meta’s January 2024 teen-safety announcement describes stricter protections for teen accounts, subject to age and location details. It says adults over 18 are restricted from initiating private chats with teens they are not connected to, and that requests from people a teen does not follow or is not connected to are limited to text until the recipient accepts. Those are teen protections, not a promise about the default settings on an adult account. Adult options, labels and eligibility can differ.

When reviewing an adult account, read the current descriptions in the app instead of assuming that a teen rule applies. If an account is used by a teenager, confirm that the age on the account is accurate so the intended protections can apply. If the user’s age or region makes a control unavailable, use the narrower audience, filtering, Restrict and blocking options that are offered.
Story replies need their own check
Stories can create a contact path even when feed posts are protected. Review who can reply to stories and whether replies from people outside the approved audience become requests. A private account does not automatically answer every message-delivery question, so check the story-reply choice alongside direct-message requests.

Choose the narrowest useful audience
Find the controls for who can tag you in posts and who can mention your username. Where the app offers audience choices, select people you follow or otherwise trust instead of the broadest available group. Turn on manual approval for tags if that option is available. A pending tag can then be reviewed before it is associated with your profile.
What this reduces
Tag and mention limits reduce unwanted association with someone else’s post and reduce exposure when a stranger tries to draw attention to your account. Meta’s teen-safety guidance describes additional limits for people a teen does not follow, while Singapore’s government guidance identifies tag and mention management as a core safety setting.
These controls are not a universal contact block. Someone who cannot tag you may still attempt a message request, reply to a story, follow you, or use another account. Treat tag and mention settings as one layer in the audit, not a substitute for message controls.

4. Filter unwanted language with Hidden Words and comments
Build a useful filter
Hidden Words can automatically filter words, phrases and emojis you choose to hide in comments and message requests. Add spelling variations, recurring slurs, phrases used by spam accounts and terms that are personally distressing. Review the list occasionally: a filter that is too broad can hide legitimate comments, while a list that is too short will miss variations.

Meta reported in October 2022 that more than one in five people with more than 10,000 followers had turned on Hidden Words. Among those people, when Hidden Words was used for comments, Meta said they saw an average of 40% fewer comments that might be offensive. Those figures describe that specific population and feature use; they are not a platform-wide guarantee or a prediction for every account (Meta’s abuse-prevention update).
Combine filtering with comment visibility
Use the comment controls to limit who can comment when the account offers that choice, and hide comments that meet the selected criteria. Filtering lowers the amount of hostile or manipulative material you have to see; it does not prove that a message is safe or identify every bot.
5. Decide between Restrict and blocking
Use Restrict for a quiet boundary
Restrict is useful when you want to reduce an account’s impact without an obvious block. Meta’s Safety Center says a restricted person cannot see when you are online or whether you have read their messages. Their new comments are initially visible only to them, and you do not receive notifications for those comments (Meta Safety Center: Tools to stay safe).
This can be appropriate for a persistent acquaintance, a suspicious follower you are still evaluating, or a situation where an immediate block could provoke unwanted attention. Because the account is not fully cut off, continue to avoid sharing sensitive information and escalate to blocking if the contact continues.

Use blocking for a hard stop
Block an account when you want to stop it from contacting or interacting with you. Meta’s expanded blocking flow can include other existing accounts that person may have and accounts they may create, which is useful when one operator is running several profiles. Meta said it expected the expanded change to mean four million fewer accounts would need to be blocked each week, based on initial test results; that is Meta’s stated expectation, not a measured current outcome.
When the block prompt offers the broader option, read it carefully and choose whether to include related accounts. Blocking addresses the selected operator’s interaction; it does not make your profile invisible to every unrelated account or secure a compromised login.
Choose the response that matches the risk
- Unwanted language without a specific person: start with Hidden Words and comment limits.
- A person you want to quiet while preserving distance: use Restrict.
- Repeated contact, harassment or a suspicious network of accounts: block and select the expanded option when it is offered.
- Concern that someone may access the account: use two-factor authentication and update recovery information; social controls alone do not solve a takeover risk.
6. Protect login and recovery
Turn on two-factor authentication
Open the security settings and enable two-factor authentication using one of the methods the current app supports. A second factor means a stolen password alone should not be sufficient to complete a login. Store backup or recovery codes in a secure place if Instagram provides them, and do not share authentication codes with anyone who asks in a message.
Enable login-request alerts
Meta says Instagram login requests alert you when someone attempts to log in from an unrecognized device or browser. Turn on those alerts and act on a prompt you do not recognize: reject it, change the password from the official app and review active sessions if the current security screen provides that view (Meta’s account-security guidance).

Check the email address and phone number connected to the account. Remove an old address or number that you no longer control and replace it with recovery information you can access. A private profile does not help if an attacker can take over the login or the recovery channel.

Verify account notices inside Instagram
Scammers may send a direct message claiming that the account will be banned, has violated a rule or needs urgent verification. Meta’s security guidance says, “Instagram will never send you a DM,” in its warning about malicious accounts impersonating Instagram. Verify genuine account communications in the Emails from Instagram area in settings instead of following links or replying to a threatening message.
How to audit the settings when labels have changed
Instagram changes menus, names and eligibility by app version, age and geography. Use this method to find the current controls without relying on an old screenshot:
- Update Instagram through your device’s official app store, then reopen it.
- Open your profile and the settings and privacy area. The icon or wording may differ between devices.
- Use the settings search field for terms such as private account, messages, story replies, tags, mentions, Hidden Words, Restrict, blocking, two-factor authentication and Emails from Instagram.
- Read the audience description on each screen and select the narrowest option that still permits the interactions you want.
- Recheck the account after an app update or a change in age, region or account type, because availability and defaults can change.
There is no single universal adult menu path established for every current Instagram account. If a control is missing, do not assume that another setting has silently replaced it; check the on-screen explanation and Instagram’s current help material for that account.
A practical response to bots messaging a private account
If a private account is already receiving bot requests, work through the layers in this order:
- Confirm the account is still private and remove followers you do not recognize.
- Review message-request categories and story replies. A private feed does not automatically disable every request channel.
- Add recurring bot language to Hidden Words and tighten comment visibility where possible.
- Restrict a suspicious account when you want to reduce its visibility and notifications without an overt block.
- Block the account when contact should stop, using the broader related-account option if it appears.
- Secure the login. Turn on two-factor authentication, enable login-request alerts and verify that recovery email and phone details are current.
Do not click a link in a message that claims to be from Instagram or provide a password, one-time code or recovery detail in reply. Check official notices in Emails from Instagram instead.
Review cadence and household checklist
Make the audit routine rather than a one-time reaction. Review the follower list after accepting a group of requests, after a suspicious message, and whenever the account’s circumstances change. For a teen account, check that the registered age is accurate and that the stricter teen defaults are active where applicable. For an adult account, verify each audience choice directly because teen protections do not automatically transfer.
- Private account status matches the intended audience.
- Follower list contains only people the user is willing to approve today.
- Message requests and story replies are set separately from feed privacy.
- Tags and mentions are limited, with manual approval enabled when available.
- Hidden Words includes the terms and variations that matter to this user.
- Restrict is reserved for quiet boundaries; blocking is used when interaction must stop.
- Two-factor authentication and login-request alerts are enabled.
- Recovery email and phone are current and controlled by the user.
- Account notices are verified in Emails from Instagram, not through a direct message.
