If Instagram notifications are turned on but you still miss alerts, check the settings in three places: your phone’s notification controls, any Focus or Do Not Disturb mode, and Instagram’s own notification preferences. The right first check depends on whether every alert is missing, only one type of alert is missing, or alerts arrive silently.
First, identify which notifications are missing
Note whether you’re missing all Instagram alerts, only direct-message (DM) alerts, or a category such as likes, follows, stories, or posts. Also check whether alerts are absent altogether, appear without sound or a banner, or show up only after you open Instagram. These symptoms point to different settings; they don’t prove a particular cause.
- All alerts are missing: Start with the phone’s Instagram notification permission and any mode that silences notifications.
- Only one category or conversation is affected: Check that category in Instagram and, for a DM, whether the conversation is muted.
- Alerts appear but are silent or delayed: Check alert presentation and Focus or Do Not Disturb before assuming delivery is blocked.
Check Instagram’s notification permission on your phone
Instagram’s in-app preferences cannot override a notification permission that is disabled in your phone’s operating system. Check the app-specific phone setting first.
On iPhone
- Open Settings.
- Tap Apps, then Instagram.
- Tap Notifications.
- Turn on Allow Notifications, then review where alerts appear and whether they can play sounds.
These are Apple’s current directions for iPhone. If Notifications does not appear for Instagram, Apple says the app might not be able to send notifications. Apple’s notification-permission instructions explain the app-specific controls.
On Android
Open Settings and look for Instagram under Apps or Notifications. Enable the notification types you want, and check whether they are set to alert or silent. Android can present alerting notifications with sound or on the lock screen, while silent notifications may appear only in the notification shade. Menu names and options vary by device and Android version; if the path differs, search Settings for “Instagram” or “notifications.” See Google’s Android notification controls.

Check Focus, Do Not Disturb, and silent presentation
A permission can be enabled while a system mode still silences or delays alerts. On iPhone, review Focus, including Do Not Disturb and Sleep, and check any schedule or allowed-app rules. Apple notes that Focus settings can silence notifications according to their configuration; see Apple’s guide to receiving notifications on iPhone and Apple Watch.
On Android, check whether Instagram’s notification type is marked silent and whether a device-wide Do Not Disturb mode is active. If an alert is visible in the notification shade but makes no sound or banner, adjust its presentation rather than treating it as a complete failure to deliver.
Check Instagram’s preferences and muted conversations
In Instagram, open the app’s notification settings and check the preference for the category you’re missing. Labels and menu locations can change, so follow the current wording shown in your version of the app rather than relying on a route that may no longer match.

For a DM-only problem, check whether the specific conversation is muted as well as the broader message-notification preference. A muted conversation can explain why one chat behaves differently from other Instagram alerts. Retest, then troubleshoot the app
- After changing a setting, close and reopen Instagram, then check whether the missing alert type arrives.
- Update Instagram and test again. An update is a sensible check when permissions and notification preferences look correct, but it is not a guaranteed fix.
- If the issue continues across notification categories or devices, use Instagram’s in-app Help or Report a Problem option if available. Describe what is missing and which settings you checked.
- Reinstalling the app is a later option, not a dependable solution. Persistent user reports show it does not always resolve notification problems.
