If Instagram notifications are enabled but alerts still do not appear, first work out whether Instagram is not sending them or your phone is hiding, silencing, or routing them elsewhere. Check the specific notification category in Instagram, then check your phone’s permission and alert settings. On iPhone, also check Focus and—if you use one—a paired Apple Watch. If only Instagram is affected and those settings are correct, an app or account issue is possible, but recent user reports do not establish a confirmed platform-wide fault or a universal fix.
First identify what is missing
“Notifications aren’t working” can describe different problems, and each points to a different control. Before changing settings, note whether the issue affects every Instagram alert or just one type, and whether alerts are absent altogether or merely lack a sound, banner, or lock-screen appearance.
- No Instagram alerts at all: check the app’s notification preferences and the phone’s permission for Instagram.
- Only one category is missing: check that category in Instagram, along with any relevant person- or chat-specific notification setting.
- A badge appears, but there is no sound or banner: the alert may be arriving without the presentation you expect. Inspect the phone’s sound and alert-style settings.
- Alerts appear late or only in some situations: check whether a Focus or other notification setting is changing their delivery or visibility.
Also note whether other apps are notifying normally, whether the problem follows one Instagram account across devices, or whether it happens only on one device. These comparisons help narrow down where to look; none by itself proves the cause.
Check Instagram’s own notification preferences
Instagram has controls for pausing push notifications, using sleep mode, and choosing which interactions and posts trigger alerts. An overall notification control being on does not necessarily mean every category is enabled.
- Open Instagram and go to its notification settings.
- Check whether push notifications are paused or sleep mode is enabled.
- Open the category that matches the missing alert—for example, messages or post-related activity—and check its setting.
- If the problem concerns one person or chat, inspect that person’s or chat’s notification preferences too, where available.
Instagram’s Help Center describes these notification controls. Its available help material identifies Android and iPhone among the supported platforms, but does not establish one complete, current troubleshooting path for every phone model.

On iPhone, check permission and how alerts are presented
iOS controls whether Instagram can send notifications and which alert surfaces it can use. Open Settings > Notifications > Instagram, then confirm notifications are allowed and inspect the options relevant to the missing alert. Depending on what is happening, check whether alerts can appear as banners or in Notification Center, and whether sounds and badges are enabled as desired. Apple’s instructions and the exact labels can vary by iOS version.
If notifications seem delayed, hidden, or inconsistent, check whether a Focus setting is affecting them. Apple recommends reviewing notification and Focus settings when alerts do not arrive as expected. Notification History can also help show whether an alert arrived but was missed; availability and presentation depend on the device’s software settings.

A notification that seems absent from the iPhone may have appeared on a paired Apple Watch instead. Apple says notifications generally go to either the Watch or the iPhone, not both. Check the Watch and its notification-mirroring settings before concluding that the alert was never delivered.

On Android, verify the app and device controls without assuming one menu path
Android notification controls and menu labels vary among phone makers and operating-system versions. Check Instagram’s notification permission and the relevant notification category in your phone’s system settings, then review any device-level setting that could silence or restrict notifications. Also confirm the matching category is enabled inside Instagram.
The available official Instagram help material indicates that Android-specific guidance exists, but it does not establish a complete current Android settings path that applies to every device. Use the instructions and labels for your phone’s model and Android version rather than relying on a universal menu sequence.

Use a short comparison to narrow down the cause

Could Instagram itself be having a problem?
Yes, an app or account issue is possible after the relevant preferences and device settings have been checked. Individual Reddit posts dated September 3, 2026 described missing notifications despite enabled settings, including a report of different behavior between accounts and another about silent or missing lock-screen DM alerts on iPhone while an Android device received them. Those posts document individual experiences, not how widespread the issue is or what caused it.
Windows Report published an article on August 19, 2026 describing user complaints that Instagram showed a “Your Notifications Are Off” warning even when settings were enabled; it also reported that some users said reinstalling did not help. This is secondary reporting, not an official Meta confirmation. The available evidence does not establish a confirmed incident’s scope, an official diagnosis, or a reliable fix that applies to everyone.

What to do if the settings are correct
- Record what is missing: all alerts or one category, and whether the problem is absent delivery or silent/hidden presentation.
- Note whether it affects one account, one device, or multiple accounts and devices.
- Use Instagram’s in-app help or reporting flow to describe the symptom and the checks you have already made.
Do not assume that reinstalling Instagram or resetting the phone will fix the problem. The reports cited above do not establish either as a dependable remedy, and a device reset is disproportionate when the cause has not been identified.
