For sellers who want viewers to browse products during a live broadcast, Facebook Live has the clearer documented setup. Meta’s seller training describes a synced catalog and product list viewers can browse while watching. Instagram can support product discovery through tagged posts, Reels, and affiliate links, but the current sources do not establish an equivalent product-list experience inside Instagram Live. Neither platform is proven to deliver universally better reach, and the available sources do not provide comparable current cost figures. Your choice should depend on account and regional eligibility, your audience, the checkout route, and whether you plan to pay to promote the broadcast.
Instagram Live vs. Facebook Live at a glance
| Decision point | Facebook Live | Instagram Live |
|---|---|---|
| Product browsing during the live | Meta’s May 2025 training describes a synced catalog and product list viewers can browse during a shoppable live. Meta’s June 2026 announcement also describes viewers browsing products and seeing prices without leaving the broadcast when Facebook live-shopping tools are combined with live video ads. | The current sources establish product tagging and affiliate links in Instagram feed posts and Reels, but do not establish an equivalent product list for Instagram Live. |
| Checkout route | The specific checkout destination is not stated in the cited Facebook live-shopping training material. Confirm the current setup for your account and market before promoting an event. | For approved sellers using Instagram Shopping through Shopify in supported regions, customers complete their purchase on the seller’s online store. |
| Reach beyond followers | Meta says live video ads can reach potential shoppers beyond a seller’s current audience. This describes a capability, not a guaranteed audience or sales result. | Meta announced live video ads for Instagram in June 2026. That announcement does not establish a comparative reach figure or guarantee a particular audience size. |
| Costs | Paid promotion is optional, but current ad rates and a complete seller cost schedule are not stated in the sources. | Current comparable advertising, transaction, and seller-platform costs are not stated in the sources. |
| Eligibility | Meta describes a synced catalog and product list for its live-shopping workflow. Check current account and market availability. | Shopify documents requirements including a supported region, Meta product-policy compliance, approval, and a Meta product catalog. |
These are documented workflow differences, not proof that one platform will perform better for every seller. Meta reported more than 3.5 billion people worldwide using its apps daily in a June 2026 announcement; that broad figure is not the audience for either platform’s live video or for any individual broadcast.
How Facebook Live supports product selling
Catalog and product-list workflow
Meta Blueprint’s Facebook Live shopping training, published May 22, 2025, describes a shoppable broadcast built around a synced product catalog and product lists. Viewers can browse and purchase products during the stream, according to the training. Meta’s June 18, 2026 announcement further describes Facebook live-shopping tools that can be combined with live video ads so viewers can browse products and see prices without leaving the broadcast.
This can reduce the friction of asking viewers to remember a product name, leave the stream, and search for it separately. It is particularly relevant when a demonstration depends on showing several products, comparing options, or answering questions while viewers consider an item. The actual buying route and account setup still need to be checked for your market; the cited training does not state a universal checkout destination.
#1 Best Overall
- 100% LIFETIME PROTECTION: Enjoy reliable performance with lifetime coverage, guaranteeing your tripod is always protected against any defects or issues.
- Ultimate Materials & Engineerin: EUCOS's phone tripod utilizes modified Nylon PA6/6 for all-weather durability. The engineered polymer delivers exceptional crush/shear resistance and toughness, achieving optimal rigidity-flexibility balance.
- Rapid Extension Tripod for Phone: Glide the rod in a single, fluid motion to convert it from a compact tripod into a full 62" selfie stick. Achieve instant elevation for dynamic filming.
- Studio-Grade Phone Rig: Safely harness phones from 2.2" to 3.6" wide with pro-level clamping and effortless framing. Built-in cold shoe expands your creative options with lights and mics.
- Hands-Free Control: The Wireless remote enables instant pairing with smartphone and remote capture from up to 33ft/10m. Ensures rock-solid stability for blur-free photography and Start/Stop video recordings effortlessly—all without device contact.
For a seller, the practical value is the continuity of the viewing experience: the product information is presented alongside the broadcast rather than relying only on a verbal description or a viewer’s memory. That does not remove the need to make the demonstration clear or to check the purchase flow. A product list is useful only if the catalog is synced and the products you intend to feature are correctly represented. Before announcing a shoppable event, review the products, prices, and details that viewers will be asked to browse, and verify the path from product selection to purchase for your account and market.
Promotion options
Meta Blueprint says sellers can schedule live video ads in Meta Ads Manager or boost a broadcast in Live Producer. Promotion can extend exposure beyond current followers, but the source provides no promised reach, cost per view, or sales conversion rate. Treat paid distribution as a campaign to measure, not as an assurance that a live event will attract buyers.
The two options are documented ways to promote, not evidence that one placement or method will always be more effective. If you use either, make a note of the campaign settings and spend so you can distinguish paid viewers and outcomes from those generated organically. Compare the result with the goal of the event—such as product interest, orders, or revenue—rather than treating impressions or views as proof of sales success. Meta’s materials do not provide a standard budget or expected return that sellers can apply to every account.

What Instagram Live can—and cannot—be assumed to do
Product discovery beyond the live
Meta’s June 2026 announcement covers Instagram affiliate links and catalog product tagging in Reels and feed posts in 22 countries and regions, including Japan. These shopping features can support discovery around a live-selling strategy, but a tag in a Reel or feed post is not evidence that the same catalog-browsing workflow exists inside an Instagram Live broadcast.
Shopify’s Instagram Shopping help documentation describes approved sellers in supported regions tagging catalog products in Instagram posts and stories. In the documented Shopify path, customers complete purchases through the seller’s online store. That gives sellers a clear external checkout route, but it should not be presented as an in-live checkout feature.

This distinction matters when planning what to promise viewers. A seller may use Instagram posts or Reels to introduce tagged products and affiliate links, and may use a live broadcast to demonstrate items or answer questions. But the reviewed sources do not establish that a viewer can open a Facebook-style product list and browse catalog items without leaving an Instagram Live. If your event relies on that particular interaction, do not assume feed, Reel, or Story shopping features extend to Live; verify the current tools for your account before promoting the event.
Eligibility matters
Shopify lists several conditions for Instagram Shopping: the seller must be in a supported region, meet Meta’s product requirements, receive approval, and have a Meta product catalog. Availability and account requirements can change, so check the current rules for your location and account before building an event around product tags. Product-tag eligibility does not by itself establish that catalog browsing or checkout will work from Instagram Live.

Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Approval and catalog readiness are separate from the question of whether a particular live feature is available. A seller can have a product catalog and be approved for a documented Instagram Shopping path without thereby proving that a Live broadcast has the same product-list behavior. Check both the commerce eligibility and the precise feature you intend to use. If your route sends a shopper to your online store, make that destination and the next step clear in the event plan rather than describing it as an Instagram in-stream checkout.
Reach: potential is not the same as audience
There is no fair, comparable figure in the cited sources for organic Instagram Live versus organic Facebook Live reach, and no platform-specific live-commerce conversion rate. The platforms’ overall user bases cannot fill that gap: Meta’s June 2026 figure of more than 3.5 billion daily users applies to its apps collectively, not to live viewers, shoppers, or your target market.
Facebook’s documented live-video ad option provides a way to seek viewers beyond your existing audience. Meta’s June 2026 announcement also says live video ads are being introduced on Instagram and expanded globally on Facebook. Neither statement tells you how many relevant shoppers will see your event or buy from it. Actual results depend on your audience, creative, offer, targeting, and campaign execution.

Use the distinction between potential distribution and actual audience when deciding where to invest. An ad option means a seller can attempt to reach people beyond current followers; it is not a forecast of how many people will watch, how many will be potential customers, or how many will complete an order. Likewise, a large combined app-use figure is not a basis for estimating a single seller’s live audience. The sources reviewed contain no independent, comparable live-commerce audience benchmark for Instagram versus Facebook.

- Compare follower overlap: estimate how many likely buyers already follow you on each platform.
- Review past live attendance and engagement on each account, using comparable products, timing, and promotion where possible.
- Track campaign outcomes separately from organic viewers if you pay to promote a broadcast.
- Measure product clicks, checkout starts, completed purchases, and revenue—not just views or comments.
- Where possible, use comparable offers and event formats so the result reflects platform differences less than changes in product, timing, or promotion.
Keep a simple record for each event: platform, product or offer, date and time, duration, whether promotion was paid, the amount spent if applicable, qualified viewers, product interactions, orders, and revenue. The available platform materials do not prescribe a universal measurement system, but keeping the same measures across comparable events helps answer the practical question that broad platform statistics cannot: which of your audiences and purchase paths work better for your products?
Costs: what is known and what is not
The sources do not establish a current, comparable price for selling through Instagram Live versus Facebook Live. Meta Blueprint confirms that paid live-video promotion is available but does not publish a current rate in the cited material. Meta’s May 2020 announcement historically described creating a Facebook Shop as free, but that statement does not establish the complete cost of selling today or the costs associated with a live event.
For a realistic budget, separate the possible cost categories rather than treating “going live” as one all-in price:
- Organic streaming: The sources reviewed do not state a platform charge for broadcasting, nor do they establish all current account or commerce terms.
- Paid promotion: You may choose to run live video ads or boost a broadcast. The price depends on your campaign and account; no comparable current ad-price figure is provided.
- Commerce tools: Catalog management, an online store, or other seller tools may have costs under the provider’s terms. The cited sources do not give a complete seller-side schedule.
- Checkout and payment: The Instagram Shopping path documented by Shopify sends customers to the seller’s online store. Any applicable store, payment-processing, or transaction charges must be checked against the seller’s actual service terms; the sources do not provide a platform-by-platform comparison.
- Production: A phone, adequate lighting, and a stable support can help with a demonstration. A tripod or ring light is optional creator equipment, not a documented platform requirement.
Before scheduling a campaign, check the current account-specific advertising interface and the terms for your commerce and checkout providers in the market where you sell. Do not infer current selling costs from Meta’s historical statement about creating a Shop.

In particular, distinguish a historical statement about setting up a Shop from the full cost of operating a seller workflow. The 2020 Shops announcement is useful historical context, but it is not a current fee schedule, a promise that every selling-related tool is free, or a comparison of the Instagram and Facebook Live paths. Similarly, an available ad format does not reveal the price of promoting your specific broadcast. Budget from the terms shown to your business now, and include the tools and checkout services your own route actually uses.
How to choose the right platform for your event
Choose Facebook when in-stream catalog browsing is essential
Facebook is the more clearly documented fit if your event depends on viewers browsing a synced catalog and product list while staying with the broadcast. The Meta materials also describe combining live-shopping tools with live video ads. Confirm that the tools and product setup are available to your business and intended market before making the format central to your campaign.
Choose Instagram when your audience and discovery path are stronger there
Instagram may be the practical choice if your likely buyers are more active on your account and your event can direct them to a supported product-tagging or seller-site path. Plan the route explicitly: the cited Shopify documentation describes purchases through the seller’s online store, while the reviewed sources do not establish an equivalent live product list inside Instagram Live.
Run a controlled comparison if the choice is uncertain
- Confirm commerce eligibility, catalog readiness, and checkout routes for each account and region.
- Select a comparable product, offer, event duration, and time window.
- Decide in advance whether each event is organic or paid; record the budget and campaign settings if you advertise.
- Use clear product demonstrations and a repeatable call to action suited to the available shopping path.
- Compare qualified viewers, product interactions, completed orders, and revenue after accounting for ad spend and seller-side costs.
- Keep the platform that produces the clearest path from product interest to completed purchase for your audience, rather than choosing based on total app-user figures.
Do not compare a paid, promoted event on one platform with an organic event on the other as though the result isolates platform performance. If paid promotion is part of your actual strategy, record it and compare like with like where possible. If the audience, offer, or checkout route differs, note that as well: those differences can affect results, and the sources do not provide a benchmark that can correct for them automatically.

Frequently overlooked setup checks
- Do not assume regional availability: Instagram Shopping eligibility is region- and account-dependent, and feature availability can change.
- Sync and review the catalog: Product information should be accurate before a live event that asks viewers to browse or buy.
- Test the full purchase path: Verify what a viewer sees when selecting a product, where checkout takes place, and whether the flow works on the devices and in the locations you serve.
- Distinguish reach from results: Ads can expand distribution, but a larger audience does not guarantee product interest or sales.
- Budget from current terms: Confirm advertising and commerce costs in your own account and market instead of relying on historical announcements.
A practical pre-live sequence
- Choose the selling path first. Decide whether the event needs an in-stream product list or whether product discovery can lead to a seller-site checkout. The first path is the more clearly documented Facebook Live workflow in the cited Meta materials; the documented Shopify Instagram Shopping path leads to the seller’s online store.
- Check eligibility and geography. For Instagram Shopping, confirm supported-region status, product-policy compliance, approval, and a Meta catalog. For either platform’s live-shopping or ad tools, check current account availability and market-specific requirements.
- Prepare the catalog and offer. Confirm that the catalog is synced and the products being featured are represented accurately. Avoid promoting a browse-and-buy experience until you have checked what viewers will actually see.
- Test the route end to end. Follow the viewer’s steps from the broadcast to product selection and checkout. For Instagram Shopping through Shopify, the documented purchase completes on the seller’s online store. Do not assume a universal Facebook checkout destination from the training description.
- Decide whether to promote. If using Facebook live-video ads, Meta Blueprint describes scheduling them through Ads Manager or boosting in Live Producer. Meta’s 2026 announcement also covers Instagram live video ads. Confirm current options in your account and record any campaign settings and spend.
- Set up the demonstration. Plan which products to show and how to explain them. A phone, adequate light, and stable support may help; a tripod or ring light is optional equipment, not a platform requirement.
- Measure what matters after the event. Record qualified attendance, product interactions, orders, revenue, and any paid spend or seller-side costs you can verify. Use the findings to refine the next event rather than assuming a platform-wide reach advantage.
Two common planning mistakes are treating discovery features as interchangeable and treating paid reach as guaranteed reach. Instagram tags in Reels or feed posts do not prove an in-Live catalog experience. Facebook’s documented advertising capability does not guarantee a certain number of shoppers. In both cases, verify the experience and the current terms in the account that will actually host the event.

Frequently Asked Questions
Which is better for selling products on Live, Instagram or Facebook?
Facebook has the clearer documented in-stream shopping workflow in the sources reviewed: Meta describes a synced catalog and product list viewers can browse during a shoppable live. Instagram can support discovery through product tags and affiliate links in other formats, but the sources do not establish an equivalent product list inside Instagram Live. The better choice still depends on your account eligibility, audience, and checkout route.
Can viewers shop products without leaving Facebook Live?
Meta’s May 2025 training describes viewers browsing and purchasing from a product list during a shoppable Facebook Live. Meta’s June 2026 announcement says Facebook live-shopping tools can be combined with live video ads so viewers can browse products and see prices without leaving the broadcast. Check current availability and setup for your account and market.
Can I tag products in Instagram Live?
The sources reviewed establish catalog product tagging in Instagram feed posts and Reels, plus product tagging in posts and Stories for approved sellers using Shopify in supported regions. They do not establish an equivalent catalog product-list feature inside Instagram Live, so verify current account tools before planning around that capability.
Where does checkout happen with Instagram Shopping?
Shopify’s documentation says customers using its documented Instagram Shopping path complete purchases through the seller’s online store. The reviewed sources do not establish this as an in-Live checkout feature.
Does Facebook Live reach more people than Instagram Live?
The cited sources provide no fair, comparable organic live-reach figures or platform-specific live conversion rates. Meta says live video ads can reach beyond a seller’s current audience, but that is a capability rather than a guaranteed audience or sales outcome. Compare your own follower overlap, past event data, and campaigns.
How much does it cost to sell on Instagram Live or Facebook Live?
The sources do not provide current comparable ad rates, transaction fees, or a complete seller cost schedule for either platform. Paid live-video promotion is optional, and sellers should check current account-level advertising terms plus the costs of their commerce and checkout providers. Meta’s 2020 statement that creating a Facebook Shop was free is historical context, not a complete current cost estimate.
What do I need before setting up Instagram Shopping?
Shopify lists a supported region, compliance with Meta product requirements, approval, and a Meta product catalog as requirements for its documented Instagram Shopping path. Requirements and availability can change, so check the current rules for your account and market.

The Bottom Line
Bottom line: Choose Facebook Live if in-stream browsing of a synced catalog and product list is central to your sales event; that is the clearer documented workflow in Meta’s current materials. Instagram can still be a strong choice when your audience is more active there and a tagged-product or seller-site checkout path suits the event, but do not assume those shopping features work the same way inside Live. Neither platform has a proven universal reach advantage or a substantiated comparable current price. Verify eligibility, checkout, and costs for your account, then let your own audience and campaign results guide the decision.
