When you switch an Instagram account from private to public, pending follow requests are reportedly deleted—not accepted automatically. The people who sent them are not notified, and they can follow you again by visiting your profile. That behavior is described by the UK Safer Internet Centre; it is not confirmed by current official Instagram documentation, so treat it as guidance rather than a guarantee for every account or app version.

What happens to pending Instagram follow requests when you go public?

The UK Safer Internet Centre says pending requests are deleted when a private Instagram account becomes public. They do not turn into approved followers. The Centre also says requesters are not notified and can visit the now-public profile to follow again.

This guidance appears in the Centre’s 2018 article, Privacy settings on Instagram – answering some FAQs. The available evidence does not establish that Instagram currently handles every account, region, or app version the same way.

Why does a private account have follow requests?

A private account requires the owner to approve people who want to follow it. Archived Instagram Help Center text says requests appear in Activity, where the owner can approve or ignore them. The archive is preserved in a California Courts PDF and dates from around 2018: Controlling Your Visibility.

With a public account, people can follow without first sending an approval request. That removes the approval barrier for ordinary follows; it does not mean the old pending requests are accepted.

What changes about who can see your Instagram content?

Changing to public is a privacy decision, not just a way to clear requests. Instagram Help Center text says private posts and follower/following lists are limited to approved followers. Meta’s 2021 safety announcement likewise says private accounts limit who can see posts, Stories, and Reels: Giving Young People a Safer, More Private Experience on Instagram.

Do not assume that every profile field becomes public: the cited material establishes visibility rules for content and lists, not a blanket rule for every piece of account information. Consider whether you are comfortable with a wider audience seeing your public posts before changing the setting.
