There is no universal winner. Buy the Insta360 Flow 2 Pro if its Deep Track 4.0 app route, 360° pan movement, or Android support matches how you shoot. Choose the DJI Osmo Mobile 8 if your priority is DockKit tracking on a compatible iPhone and you want DJI’s Multifunctional Module for person, cat, and dog tracking. In either case, check your exact phone, operating-system version, camera or streaming app, and bundle contents before ordering. The manufacturer pages reviewed here do not establish a current price advantage or an independent stabilization winner.
Insta360 Flow 2 Pro vs. DJI Osmo Mobile 8 at a glance
These are not interchangeable feature lists. The important difference is where tracking happens: Apple’s DockKit system in compatible iPhone apps, the manufacturer’s own app, or (for DJI) an additional tracking module. The table below separates documented facts from areas that still require checking at purchase time.
| Decision point | Insta360 Flow 2 Pro | DJI Osmo Mobile 8 |
|---|---|---|
| Documented iPhone DockKit requirement | iPhone 12 or later, iOS 17.0 or higher; iPhone SE series and iPhone 16e excluded. Verify the intended app’s DockKit support. Insta360’s DockKit requirements | iPhone 12 or later, iOS 18.5 or higher; iPhone SE (3rd generation) and iPhone 16e excluded. DJI’s Osmo Mobile 8 FAQ |
| Manufacturer-app tracking | Deep Track 4.0 in the Insta360 app; Insta360 says it tracks people, animals, and objects, including on Android through that app. Product specifications | DJI documents tracking through DJI’s Multifunctional Module and its supported operating modes; confirm the current app and phone matrix in the FAQ. | Accessory tracking | Flow 2 Pro’s standard bundle does not include the separate AI Tracker. The Flow 2 Plus bundle does include one. Insta360 comparison and FAQ | The Multifunctional Module adds cat and dog tracking to person tracking, according to DJI. Whether it is included depends on the package you select; verify the box contents. |
| Pan and tilt movement | Three-axis stabilization, continuous 360° pan range, and 360° free tilt mode are listed by Insta360. Flow 2 and Flow 2 Plus have a more limited pan range. | Movement and tracking modes are model-specific; the reviewed DJI documentation does not provide a directly comparable independent movement test. |
| Published runtime | 10 hours when balanced on a flat surface at 25°C/77°F with the tracking ring light off; a manufacturer test condition, not an independent measurement. | No directly comparable Osmo Mobile 8 runtime figure was established in the reviewed material. DJI’s approximately 10-hour figure is published for the Osmo Mobile 7/7P when balanced and stationary without accessories, and falls with tracking and light use. |
| Phone fit | Phone width 64–84 mm, thickness 6.9–10 mm, and weight 130–300 g; gimbal approximately 357 g plus approximately 25 g for the magnetic clamp. | Check DJI’s current compatibility information for your exact phone and case. The reviewed FAQ does not establish a matching dimensional table for Osmo Mobile 8. |

Start with your phone and the apps you actually use
A gimbal can be mechanically compatible with a phone yet fail to track in the app you care about. Decide whether you record with the native camera, a social app, a video-call app, a streaming app, or the gimbal maker’s application. Then check support for that exact combination.
Flow 2 Pro: two separate tracking routes
Insta360 documents both Apple DockKit and its own Deep Track 4.0. DockKit is an Apple subject-tracking technology that depends on iOS support. With a qualifying iPhone, Flow 2 Pro can use the native iPhone camera and supported third-party apps after NFC pairing. The supported-app list matters: DockKit does not automatically make every camera, social, or streaming app track a subject. Insta360’s DockKit support instructions tell users to check whether their intended app is supported.

Deep Track 4.0 is a different system inside the Insta360 app. Insta360 says it can follow people, animals, and objects. Android phones do not use Apple DockKit, but Android users can use Deep Track in the Insta360 app. That gives Flow 2 Pro a documented Android path, while still requiring you to shoot through the app and confirm that your phone meets Insta360’s compatibility requirements.
Osmo Mobile 8: DockKit plus a DJI tracking module
DJI’s direct-phone DockKit mode also depends on the app. DJI specifies an iPhone 12 or later running iOS 18.5 or later, excluding the iPhone SE (3rd generation) and iPhone 16e. DJI says to close DJI Mimo and remove the Multifunctional Module when using this direct DockKit feature. That instruction is important: the accessory-based and direct-DockKit paths are not simply one combined mode.
The Osmo Mobile 8 Multifunctional Module adds cat and dog tracking to person tracking, according to DJI’s current FAQ. Confirm which package contains the module and which phone, app, and operating-system combinations support the mode you want. The FAQ is the authoritative place to recheck requirements because accessory and software behavior can change.

Why the iOS version difference matters
Both products list iPhone 12 or later for DockKit, but their minimum operating systems are different: iOS 17.0 or later for Flow 2 Pro and iOS 18.5 or later for Osmo Mobile 8. An iPhone that satisfies the hardware requirement can still fail the DJI requirement if it cannot run iOS 18.5. Both manufacturers list exclusions, so do not infer compatibility from the iPhone name alone.
Tracking subjects: people, pets, and objects
When Flow 2 Pro is the better fit
- You use Android and are willing to record through the Insta360 app.
- You need documented tracking for objects as well as people and animals; Insta360 explicitly lists all three for Deep Track 4.0.
- You want to use DockKit in the native iPhone camera or a supported third-party app and your iPhone meets the iOS 17.0 requirement.
Deep Track’s subject list does not guarantee identical behavior in every scene or app. It describes the supported subject categories, not an independent accuracy or reliability test.
When Osmo Mobile 8 is the better fit
- You have an iPhone that meets DJI’s stricter iOS 18.5 DockKit requirement and your chosen app supports DockKit.
- You specifically want the Multifunctional Module’s documented cat and dog tracking in addition to person tracking.
- You prefer to follow DJI’s accessory and app setup rather than relying on the Insta360 app for tracking.
Neither manufacturer page supplies a controlled head-to-head test of lock-on speed, recovery after occlusion, or tracking reliability. Do not treat the feature descriptions as proof that one gimbal tracks better.

Physical movement, mounting, and phone fit
Flow 2 Pro’s movement range
Insta360 lists three-axis stabilization, a continuous 360° pan range, and 360° free tilt mode for Flow 2 Pro. A continuous pan range is useful when you walk around a subject or want the camera to rotate without hitting a defined pan stop. Insta360 says the less expensive Flow 2 and Flow 2 Plus have a more limited pan range; do not assume their movement matches the Pro model.

The stated phone envelope is 64–84 mm wide, 6.9–10 mm thick, and 130–300 g. Measure your phone with its case attached if you intend to shoot without removing the case; a case can push a phone outside those limits or alter the balance.
Osmo Mobile 8’s setup choices
The Osmo Mobile 8 supports direct phone connection using NFC for its documented DockKit workflow. DJI’s instructions also create a physical choice: use the phone directly for DockKit-compatible iOS apps, or install the Multifunctional Module for its additional tracking functions. In direct DockKit mode, DJI says to remove that module and close DJI Mimo.

The reviewed DJI material does not establish a matching Osmo Mobile 8 phone-weight, thickness, or width table, nor does it provide an independent comparison of stabilization or pan range against Flow 2 Pro. Use DJI’s live compatibility checker for your exact handset and case rather than extrapolating from another Osmo Mobile generation.
Battery claims and what they do—and do not—tell you
Flow 2 Pro’s 10-hour figure applies when the gimbal is balanced on a flat surface at 25°C/77°F and its tracking ring light is off, according to Insta360’s specifications. Handheld movement, an unbalanced phone, colder or hotter conditions, and use of lights or tracking features can change actual runtime.
DJI’s cited approximately 10-hour figure belongs to the Osmo Mobile 7/7P specifications, measured balanced and stationary without accessories. DJI notes that tracking and light use reduce runtime. That is useful context for how accessory use affects a gimbal battery, but it is not an Osmo Mobile 8 test and cannot establish parity with Flow 2 Pro.

Insta360 AI Tracker
Insta360 says the Flow 2 Plus bundle includes an AI Tracker. Standard Flow 2 and Flow 2 Pro bundles do not include it, although the accessory can be purchased separately. Insta360 describes the AI Tracker as enabling tracking in third-party apps on iOS and Android. If third-party-app tracking is the reason you are considering Flow 2 Pro, compare the price of the correct bundle plus any separate tracker—not just the bare gimbal.
DJI Multifunctional Module
DJI documents the Multifunctional Module as the route to cat and dog tracking on Osmo Mobile 8. Confirm whether your selected retail package includes it. If it does not, add the module’s current price and verify that the resulting setup still supports your intended app and phone. For direct DockKit use, DJI instructs users to remove the module, so owning it does not mean every shooting mode uses it simultaneously.

A DJI FAQ for the Osmo Mobile 7 Series says the DJI OM Grip Tripod is sold separately and is recommended when conditions are unsuitable for the built-in tripod. That statement is about the 7 Series, not proof of Osmo Mobile 8 compatibility. Do not buy the accessory for Mobile 8 without checking DJI’s current compatibility listing.
Quick Recap
How to choose in five practical steps
- Identify your phone. Record the exact model, operating-system version, and whether you use a case. Eliminate Osmo Mobile 8 if your iPhone cannot meet iOS 18.5; eliminate Flow 2 Pro DockKit if your iPhone is an excluded model or cannot meet iOS 17.0.
- Identify your shooting app. If you need native-camera or third-party-app tracking, verify DockKit support for that app. If you are comfortable using a manufacturer app, compare Deep Track 4.0 with DJI’s supported module workflow.
- Identify the subject. Flow 2 Pro’s Deep Track documentation lists people, animals, and objects. DJI specifically documents cat and dog tracking through the Multifunctional Module. Match the feature to your actual subject rather than assuming “subject tracking” covers every case.
- Price the complete setup. Include the AI Tracker or Multifunctional Module if needed, a compatible clamp or case arrangement, and any tripod. Current prices and bundle contents vary by region and were not established in the cited material.
- Recheck the manufacturer FAQ immediately before purchase. Confirm phone, app, operating-system, accessory, and regional availability details on the Flow 2 comparison and FAQ and Osmo Mobile 8 FAQ.
Basic setup paths
Flow 2 Pro with an iPhone and DockKit
- Mount the phone within the stated 64–84 mm width, 6.9–10 mm thickness, and 130–300 g weight limits.
- Update the iPhone to iOS 17.0 or later and confirm that it is not an excluded iPhone SE-series model or iPhone 16e.
- Pair through NFC as described in Insta360’s DockKit instructions.
- Open the native Camera app or another app listed as DockKit-compatible; do not assume an unlisted app will track.
- Test subject acquisition, framing, and controls before recording a paid, live, or one-take session.
Flow 2 Pro with Android or with Deep Track
- Check that your Android phone is supported by Insta360 and fits the clamp limits.
- Install and update the Insta360 app.
- Balance the phone, select Deep Track, and choose the person, animal, or object you want the app to follow.
- Test the intended resolution, frame rate, and recording controls in the app before relying on the setup.
Osmo Mobile 8 in direct DockKit mode
- Use an iPhone 12 or later running iOS 18.5 or later, excluding iPhone SE (3rd generation) and iPhone 16e.
- Use NFC to connect the phone as DJI describes.
- Close DJI Mimo and remove the Multifunctional Module, as DJI instructs for direct DockKit operation.
- Open a DockKit-compatible iOS app and test tracking before the real shoot.
Osmo Mobile 8 with the Multifunctional Module
- Confirm that your package includes the module or obtain the current compatible accessory.
- Install it according to DJI’s current instructions and verify the supported phone and app combination.
- Use the documented person, cat, or dog tracking mode, then test transitions, distance, and lighting in the location where you will record.
Common buying mistakes and fixes
- Buying for the phone brand alone: Two iPhone 12 models can differ in operating-system support. Check the version and excluded models.
- Assuming every app supports tracking: DockKit requires app-level support. Check the supported-app list for the exact camera, social, call, or streaming app.
- Confusing Deep Track with DockKit: Flow 2 Pro’s Android route is Deep Track in the Insta360 app, not Apple DockKit.
- Missing the accessory in the box: Flow 2 Pro normally does not include the AI Tracker; DJI’s module inclusion depends on the Osmo Mobile 8 package.
- Using the wrong mode with DJI’s module attached: DJI says to remove it and close DJI Mimo for direct Osmo Mobile 8 DockKit use.
- Treating runtime figures as laboratory parity: Flow 2 Pro’s figure and DJI’s cited 7/7P figure use different products and conditions. They are not a head-to-head battery result.
- Expecting a performance ranking from specifications: The cited pages do not establish which gimbal has better stabilization, tracking reliability, or recovery after obstruction.
Which one should you buy?
Buy Flow 2 Pro when
- You use Android and want documented in-app tracking.
- You need Deep Track 4.0’s stated people, animal, and object categories.
- You want continuous 360° pan and 360° free tilt listed for the Pro model.
- Your iPhone meets the lower iOS 17.0 DockKit requirement and your preferred apps support DockKit.
Buy Osmo Mobile 8 when
- You use a compatible iPhone that meets DJI’s iOS 18.5 requirement.
- Your preferred workflow is DockKit in a supported iOS app and you are comfortable following DJI’s direct-mode setup.
- You need the Multifunctional Module’s documented person, cat, and dog tracking and the chosen bundle includes it—or its added cost fits your budget.
Wait and verify before either purchase when
- Your phone model, case, or app is not clearly listed.
- You need third-party-app tracking but have not priced the required accessory.
- You are choosing solely on battery life, stabilization quality, or tracking accuracy; the cited manufacturer specifications do not provide a comparable independent test.
