In Monster Hunter Wilds, Tornado Slash is a grounded Insect Glaive finisher for keeping pressure on a monster that is already within reach. Set up with Kinsect extracts, use grounded attacks while the target stays accessible, and commit to Tornado Slash only when the opening is long enough for the full move and its recovery. Vault when it helps you reach a part or create a mounting opportunity—not because every ground combo requires an aerial link.

What Tornado Slash does in Monster Hunter Wilds

Tornado Slash belongs to the Insect Glaive’s grounded pressure options. Its value depends on position and timing: the target should remain within reach, and the monster’s opening should leave room for the finisher. If the monster moves or the opening closes, prioritize repositioning over forcing the attack.

The move name also appears in Monster Hunter Generations, but that game has different move trees and controls. Capcom’s Generations manual lists Tornado Slash in recommended Insect Glaive combos and notes that its examples can be powered by red extract; those examples are not Wilds control instructions. Prepare with Kinsect extracts

Extracts are the setup layer for Insect Glaive attacks. Send the Kinsect to a marked monster part and recall it to collect the extract. A charged Kinsect Harvest can pass through more than one part. Which color a part yields varies by monster, so check what the Kinsect brings back rather than assuming a fixed part-to-color mapping. The following mechanics are described in the RedGauge Insect Glaive guide, which identifies its coverage as updated for Title Update 4.

Together, the team ventures into an unexplored new frontier where surprises await around every corner.
  • A Living World – The Forbidden Lands spans multiple biomes with dynamic identities, such as the Windward Plains and Scarlet Forest, where the ecosystems shift between vibrant seasons brimming with life, and unforgiving climates where monsters fight over limited resources. Changes in the landscape will impact the creatures that live there and push hunters to adapt as well.
  • New Monsters and Wildlife – Monster Hunter Wilds features a variety of new creatures, ranging from herds of small species to large monsters – some of which roam the Forbidden Lands in packs. Every creature hunters encounter in the wild has carved out a special place in its habitat and possesses unique attacks and behaviors.

  • Red: Enables stronger attacks and lets you charge certain moves.
  • White: Improves movement speed and jump height.
  • Orange: Adds knockback resistance while the weapon is drawn.
  • Red and white: Raise attack.
  • White and orange: Raise defense.
  • All three: Triple extract further raises attack, modifies some attacks, and reduces the effects of roars, wind pressure, and tremors. The three-color effect shares a timer.
  • Green: Restores health when the Kinsect returns; it is separate from the red, white, and orange extract slots.

For Tornado Slash, red is the key threshold described by the guide because it enables the weapon’s stronger attacks. Gather the extracts that support the route you intend to use, then keep track of the shared triple-extract timer if you have all three colors active.

Choose grounded pressure or an aerial route

Route Use it when Trade-off
Grounded attacks into Tornado Slash The part you want to hit is already reachable and the opening can accommodate the finisher. Keeps pressure on a reachable target, but committing during a short opening can leave you exposed or out of position.
Vault and aerial movement A vault gives access to a part grounded movement cannot reach in time, or creates a useful mounting opportunity. Changes your position and access; it is a choice for reaching the target, not a mandatory link between grounded finishers.

When you use Tornado Slash, continue from a grounded string and stay oriented toward the reachable part. Use the recovery to reposition if needed; if the monster remains in reach, continue pressure. If the target has moved beyond reach, vault only when the aerial route offers a useful way to close distance or attack a newly accessible part.

Decide whether to keep pressuring or use Rising Spiral Slash

Rising Spiral Slash is a different commitment, not another name for Tornado Slash. The RedGauge guide describes it as a triple-extract spender after a charged Descending attack. It can suit a longer opportunity when the monster is likely to remain in the attack’s path, but spending the extracts changes your setup and creates a recovery question.

  • Keep grounded pressure when the target remains reachable and you want to preserve triple extract for continued attacks.
  • Consider Rising Spiral Slash when the opening is longer, the monster is likely to stay in its path, and you have a plan to recover the missing extracts afterward.
  • Check for a wound before committing. A wound can give you a way to recover all three extracts with Focus Thrust: Leaping Strike after the attack.

Wounds are shared in multiplayer. Another hunter may destroy the wound you intended to use before you can follow up, so treat that recovery option as available only while the wound remains.

Use Wilds controls, not another game’s button chart

Exact button inputs depend on platform and control settings. The available Wilds guide directs players to the in-game Hunter’s Notes for weapon controls, and no verified Wilds-specific button sequence is established here. Check the Hunter’s Notes for your platform and configuration rather than copying a Generations input chart.

For reference, Arekkz Gaming’s 2025 Insect Glaive tutorial indexes Tornado Slash at 12:33 and a Tornado Slash loop at 26:18. It predates the RedGauge guide’s Title Update 4 context, so use it as a viewing reference rather than authority for current inputs or patch-sensitive mechanics.

A practical decision sequence

  1. Check the target and your extracts. Use the Kinsect on marked parts, recall it, and confirm that red is active before relying on stronger attacks.
  2. Assess reach. If the part is reachable on the ground, begin grounded pressure. Vault only if it provides useful access or a mounting opportunity.
  3. Read the opening. Use Tornado Slash when the monster is likely to stay within reach for the full finisher. If the opening is too short, reposition or continue with a safer option.
  4. Choose whether to preserve triple extract. For continued grounded pressure, keep attacking without spending it. For a longer opening, consider Rising Spiral Slash only if its path and your recovery plan make sense.
  5. Plan the follow-up. If relying on a wound to restore extracts with Focus Thrust: Leaping Strike, make sure it still exists—especially in multiplayer.

What not to infer from the available damage information

No named statistic, damage value, motion value, or universal damage ranking for Tornado Slash is established by the cited material. The supported advice is situational: use the move when the target is reachable and the opening accommodates the finisher, rather than treating it as the best choice in every matchup or build.
