Choose Inscryption if you want card strategy, roguelike experimentation, escape-room puzzles and a horror story that keeps changing its rules. Choose Visage if you want the most sustained haunted-house dread, survival-horror pressure and a deliberately slow investigation. Choose Layers of Fear if you want cinematic first-person exploration, environmental puzzles and dramatic reality-warping with little mechanical friction.

The title sometimes appears as “Encryption,” but the game is Inscryption, Daniel Mullins Games’ 2021 card-driven psychological-horror adventure. It is fundamentally different from Visage and Layers of Fear, which are both first-person house-exploration games. That distinction matters more than any simple “which is scariest?” ranking.

At a glance: the right game for each kind of horror fan

Game Best for What you do Main horror style Commitment
Inscryption Strategy fans and players who enjoy experimentation Build card decks, make risk decisions, solve cabin puzzles and uncover secrets Meta-horror, grotesque rituals, unreliable interfaces and reality-breaking surprises Variable runs with strong replay value
Visage Experienced horror players seeking maximum tension Investigate a large house, find items, interpret clues and survive escalating threats Sustained haunted-house dread, vulnerability and pursuit Slow-burn; the developer’s 2020 press kit estimated 15–20 hours
Layers of Fear Beginners and story-first players Explore an artist’s mansion, solve environmental puzzles and follow authored story beats Surreal transformations, unreliable space and cinematic set pieces Usually brisker and more guided; the 2023 edition is the broadest package

A useful one-line verdict is: Inscryption is the best game for systems and surprise, Visage is the scariest fit for patient horror veterans, and Layers of Fear is the easiest recommendation for atmospheric story and visual spectacle.

What Inscryption actually plays like

Inscryption released on October 19, 2021, from Daniel Mullins Games and Devolver Digital. The official description calls it “an inky black card-based odyssey that blends the deckbuilding roguelike, escape-room style puzzles, and psychological horror into a blood-laced smoothie.” That unusual combination is the point: the card table, the cabin and the game interface all become parts of the horror.

Card combat is the core activity

You assemble a deck from woodland-creature cards and fight through a sequence of encounters. Cards can be obtained through drafting, and the game’s fiction turns deck improvement into disturbing physical acts, including surgery and self-mutilation. Sacrificing one creature to play another is both a tactical decision and a horror ritual, so the mechanics continually reinforce the setting instead of sitting beside it.

Runs encourage experimentation. A powerful card may help in the next battle but create an awkward deck later; a seemingly minor choice can alter your route or resources. This makes Inscryption more strategically demanding than either house-exploration game.

The cabin is also an escape room

Between card encounters, you search Leshy’s cabin and solve puzzles hidden in its walls. These discoveries are not optional decoration: they reveal how the world works and undermine your assumptions about what kind of game you are playing. The result is a horror adventure in which interface, rules and story can all become unreliable.

Is Inscryption a horror game or a card game?

It is both, but the card game is the delivery system for the horror. If you dislike turn-based strategy, deck construction or repeated runs, its most important ideas may feel like obstacles. If you enjoy finding synergies, testing risky choices and being surprised by a game that changes shape, the mechanics make the horror more effective than a conventional haunted-house walk-through.

Replay value and audience

Repeated experimentation is a major reason to choose Inscryption. Its runs, deck decisions and secrets give strategy-minded players more reason to return than the authored progression in Layers of Fear. It is available digitally on PC, PlayStation, Xbox and Nintendo Switch; verify the current store listing for the edition and region you intend to buy. Physical editions have also been announced through a partnership involving Special Reserve Games, Devolver Digital and Daniel Mullins Games, so check current stock and regional compatibility before ordering.

What Visage actually plays like

Visage is a first-person survival/psychological-horror game from SadSquare Studio. It takes place in a large house with a terrible history, a timeline marked by repeated deaths. The house is not merely a backdrop: searching ordinary rooms, managing your vulnerability and working out what to do next are the main sources of pressure.

A slow investigation with real survival-horror tension

The game gives you moderate agency over exploration and item use, but objectives can be opaque. You may need to examine a room carefully, remember a visual clue or test an object without an explicit quest marker telling you what comes next. That uncertainty creates tension, but it also demands patience. Players who want constant direction may find the pacing frustrating.

SadSquare’s press material describes randomized gameplay elements and four chapters, each approaching a different horror sub-genre. Randomization and chapter structure mean that the house can feel hostile even during routine searching. You are not simply walking from one scripted scare to the next; you are trying to stay oriented while the game withholds certainty.

How long is Visage?

SadSquare’s 2020 press kit estimated 15 to 20 hours of gameplay. That is a historical developer estimate, not a guaranteed completion time: exploration speed, puzzle-solving ability and how often you retreat from danger will change the result. The same press kit reported more than 150,000 PC copies sold during the first Early Access year and more than 87% positive Steam reviews. Those are dated, developer-reported figures, not current sales or review measurements.

Who should choose Visage?

Choose it if you want the strongest sense of vulnerability in this comparison and are comfortable with a slow-burn investigation. It is more intimidating and less forgiving than Layers of Fear, particularly for newcomers to survival horror. Its rewards come from enduring uncertainty: learning the house, interpreting its history and deciding when a search is worth the risk.

What Layers of Fear actually plays like

The original Layers of Fear released on February 15, 2016, from Bloober Team. You play a painter exploring an ever-shifting Victorian mansion while trying to complete a masterpiece at the cost of his sanity. Rooms, corridors and objects transform as memories surface, making environmental change the central scare device.

Authored exploration and environmental puzzles

Layers of Fear is built around first-person exploration, environmental puzzles and story reveals. Progression is more guided than in Visage, and the game asks less of you mechanically than Inscryption. You follow a designed sequence of spaces and set pieces rather than constructing a build or managing a survival-horror resource loop.

That guidance makes it an approachable entry point. You still need to inspect rooms and interpret what the mansion is showing you, but the experience is closer to an interactive haunted-house tour than to an endurance test. Players seeking combat, open-ended survival systems or a long replay loop may find it too authored.

Should you play Layers of Fear 2016 or 2023?

The 2023 Layers of Fear, developed by Anshar Studios and Bloober Team and released on June 15, 2023, is presented as a definitive edition. It collects the series’ chapters and adds content, making it the broadest single package for someone starting now. Choose the 2016 release if you specifically want the compact original experience; choose the 2023 edition if you want the larger modern collection in one purchase.

These are not interchangeable labels for exactly the same product. The 2016 game is the original painter-in-the-mansion release, while the 2023 edition packages the series’ material into a wider collection. Check your platform’s current listing to confirm which chapters and regional edition are included.

Which is scarier: Visage or Layers of Fear?

Visage is the scarier choice for most players who define horror as sustained fear and vulnerability. Its house, pursuit pressure, uncertain objectives and survival-horror structure keep you exposed for longer stretches. The slow pace gives dread time to accumulate, and the lack of obvious direction can make ordinary exploration stressful.

Layers of Fear is more likely to impress than overwhelm. Its strongest effects come from dramatic changes to rooms and corridors, unreliable space and carefully staged reveals. Those moments can be startling and visually memorable, but the more guided structure gives you less room to feel lost or mechanically helpless.

Your tolerance matters. If being unable to tell what the game expects is more stressful than a sudden visual transformation, Visage will feel harsher. If you prefer controlled pacing and spectacle, Layers of Fear may produce more enjoyable scares even when it is not the more punishing game.

Which one has puzzles instead of combat?

All three involve puzzles, but they use them differently.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Inscryption: card battles are the main interactive system, while escape-room puzzles in the cabin reveal secrets and alter your understanding of the game. It is the only option here where deck construction is a central skill.
  • Visage: investigation, item use and environmental problem-solving are integrated into survival-horror exploration. The challenge is often discovering what to do while staying safe, not defeating enemies through a conventional combat loop.
  • Layers of Fear: environmental puzzles and exploration drive progression. Its authored structure emphasizes observing spaces and following story clues rather than building a character or surviving a combat system.

If “puzzles instead of combat” means you want no card battles, choose Visage or Layers of Fear. If you are happy for the main challenge to be strategic card combat plus separate room puzzles, Inscryption offers the most unusual design.

Which psychological horror game is best for beginners?

Start with Layers of Fear, preferably the 2023 edition if you want the broadest package. Its first-person controls, guided progression and low mechanical friction let you concentrate on atmosphere and story. You are less likely to be blocked by deck-building decisions or an opaque survival-horror objective.

Move to Visage when you want a more demanding experience and are willing to search without constant direction. It rewards patience but can be intimidating for someone new to survival horror.

Choose Inscryption first only if you already like strategy games or are excited by an unconventional format. Its horror works through systems and surprises, so a player expecting a conventional haunted house may misread the opening hours.

Which game has the most replay value?

Inscryption has the strongest replay-oriented design of the three because runs, deck choices and experimentation are built into its structure. Even when the broad narrative is authored, the moment-to-moment decisions change how you approach encounters.

Visage offers reasons to revisit its house if you want to understand missed clues or experience its chapter-based variations, but its primary appeal is the first sustained investigation rather than an endless build system.

Layers of Fear is the least replay-driven choice. Its appeal is discovering how the mansion’s transformations and story reveals fit together. The 2023 edition adds breadth by collecting chapters, but it remains primarily an authored exploration experience rather than a run-based game.

Visage

Platform and regional availability should be checked on the current store page before buying. The historical press-kit figures do not establish today’s price, sales status or review score, so treat them as context rather than a purchasing guarantee.

Layers of Fear

Decide first whether you want the compact 2016 original or the broader 2023 definitive edition. The 2023 release is the straightforward choice for a new player who wants the series’ chapters and added content together; the 2016 release is appropriate when your priority is the original game itself. Digital pricing and included content vary by storefront and region.

A practical decision guide

Pick Inscryption when…

  • You want a card game that is also a psychological-horror story.
  • You enjoy roguelike runs, deck construction and meaningful risk decisions.
  • You like escape-room puzzles and discovering secrets without knowing where the narrative is going.
  • You value experimentation and replayability more than a traditional haunted-house setting.

Pick Visage when…

  • You want the most oppressive atmosphere and sustained dread.
  • You are comfortable with vulnerability, pursuit and slow exploration.
  • You prefer investigating a house with a history of deaths to solving a card-game meta-puzzle.
  • You have patience for unclear objectives and survival-horror pressure.

Pick Layers of Fear when…

  • You want a cinematic first-person horror story with visual spectacle.
  • You prefer environmental puzzles to deck management.
  • You are new to psychological horror and want a guided introduction.
  • You want one modern package containing the series’ chapters; in that case, begin with the 2023 edition.

Final recommendation

These games are not three versions of the same formula. Inscryption is a strategy game that weaponizes horror through cards, sacrifices, puzzles and meta-fiction. Visage is the slowest and most demanding haunted-house survival experience, best suited to players who want to feel genuinely unsafe. Layers of Fear is the most accessible, authored and visually theatrical option, with the 2023 edition offering the broadest starting package.
