An ink-tank printer can cost less over time if you print regularly, but a cheaper cartridge printer may be the better buy if you print only occasionally. The deciding factor is not the printer’s sticker price: compare the printer, expected ink use, and other known costs over the same ownership period using local prices and your actual print volume.

What does a fair printer cost comparison include?

Epson defines total cost of ownership as the hardware purchase price plus ongoing ink or toner costs. Other consumables, servicing, power, and replacement parts can also affect the total when reliable figures are available. Epson’s calculator methodology describes this broader approach.

Use a consistent period, such as three years, and calculate each candidate separately:

Ownership cost = printer price + expected consumable costs + other known operating or maintenance costs.

Epson EcoTank ET-4800 Wireless Color All-in-One Supertank Printer
  • Innovative Cartridge-Free Printing ― High-capacity ink tanks mean no more tiny, expensive ink cartridges; Epson’s exclusive EcoFit ink bottles make filling easy and worry-free
  • Impressive Print Quality ― Unique Micro Piezo Heat-Free Technology produces sharp text – plus impressive color photos and graphics – on virtually any paper type
  • Zero Cartridge Waste – By using an EcoTank printer, you can help reduce the amount of cartridge waste ending up in landfills
  • Built-in Scanner & Copier ― High-resolution flatbed scanner and a color display for easy document copying and navigation

For each model, record its current local price and whether the package includes starter ink or a fuller supply. Estimate black and color printing separately if your use differs, then estimate the consumables needed for the entire period. Add service, power, and maintenance costs only when you have credible figures; otherwise, state that they are excluded rather than silently treating them as zero.

When does an ink tank pay for its higher purchase price?

Tank printers generally exchange a higher upfront cost for a lower ink expense per page. If you print frequently or at higher volume, those recurring savings may eventually outweigh the price premium. If you print rarely, the premium may take too long to recover, making a lower-cost cartridge printer more economical.

HP publishes this break-even calculation: Break-even months = (Smart Tank price − Cartridge printer price) ÷ (Monthly cartridge cost − Monthly Smart Tank ink cost). Use the prices and monthly ink costs for the exact models you are considering. The answer changes with local prices, the mix of black and color pages, and how much you print; there is no universal break-even month.

HP’s cost-comparison article illustrates why assumptions matter: for a specific comparison at 400 pages per month, HP reports one-year totals of $149 for its Smart Tank 5101 and $2,883 for its Envy 6055e, including annual ink costs of $62 and $2,826, respectively. These are HP’s model-specific calculations, not independent market averages or a forecast for other printers. See HP’s comparison and assumptions.

How to estimate your own costs

  1. Choose an ownership period and page volume. Use a period such as three years and estimate your monthly pages from recent experience. If your volume is uncertain, run separate low-, medium-, and high-use scenarios.
  2. Compare exact models at current local prices. Record each printer’s price and what ink is included. Do not compare a tank’s refill cost with a cartridge printer’s full replacement cost while ignoring the ink bundled with either printer.
  3. Separate black and color use. Estimate those page counts independently where possible; a mostly black-text workload can produce a different result from frequent color documents or photos.
  4. Check yield and consumable prices. Use genuine ink prices and the published yield for the exact printer and consumable. Note the yield test method and account for ink used during setup.
  5. Estimate replacements across the full period. Apply your page volume to the published yield to estimate how many bottles or cartridge sets you may need. Treat this as an estimate, not a promise of exact output.
  6. Add other costs you can substantiate. Include relevant maintenance supplies, service, power, or parts only when you have dependable data. Clearly identify costs you exclude.
  7. Check whether each printer meets your needs. Compare print-only versus all-in-one functions, scanning or an automatic document feeder, automatic duplexing, paper capacity, connectivity, speed, and photo quality. A lower ink bill does not compensate for missing features you need.

Why published page yields are only estimates

Manufacturers’ yield figures are not a guarantee of the number of pages you will print. Epson says quoted yields can vary with image content, paper, print frequency, and environmental conditions; it also notes that initial setup consumes ink to fill printhead nozzles. Epson’s EcoTank calculator disclosures describe those qualifications.

HP likewise says actual yield varies and that some included ink is consumed during startup. Its published page-yield claims should be checked against the exact model and the linked footnote before use. HP’s Smart Tank disclosures explain these qualifications.

For context, Epson’s Europe calculator claims “save up to 95% on ink costs.” That is an Epson calculation comparing average bottle yield and cost with cartridges used in 40 of Europe’s best-selling consumer A4 color inkjets. The comparison references IDC shipment data from 2023, published in Q1 2024; it is not a guaranteed saving for an individual buyer or a current U.S. price comparison.

The same calculator lists yields of 7,500 black and 6,000 color pages for separately sold 102 bottles. Epson says these figures are extrapolated from its test-pattern methodology, vary with print conditions, and are not based on ISO/IEC 24711. It also lists 14,000 black and 11,200 color pages for two included bottle sets with the specified ET-3700, ET-3750, and ET-4750 models. Those figures apply to the named models and bundle, with actual output varying. Read Epson’s yield and comparison disclosures.

How maintenance and printer features change the decision

Ink use is not limited to the pages you print. Consumer Reports defines maintenance ink use as extra ink used by an inkjet printer to maintain its printheads. Its 2026 buying guide describes annual ink cost as an estimate based on its tests and members’ reported printing habits, rather than a universal cost for every owner. Consumer Reports’ Buying Guide 2026 provides that evaluation framework.

The guide lists approximate prices of $180 for the Epson EcoTank ET-2840 Special Edition, $299 for the Epson EcoTank ET-4810, $300 for the Epson EcoTank ET-3843, $350 for the HP Smart Tank 7602, and $580 for the Epson EcoTank Photo ET-8500. These are guide-listed approximate retail prices, not live prices for October 2026. They show why “tank printer” alone does not determine the upfront cost: model features and intended use also matter.

Before choosing, verify that the printer handles the tasks you actually do. A useful comparison includes:

Which printer type fits your printing habits?

A cartridge printer may fit occasional printing

If you print only a few pages now and then, compare the lower purchase price against the ink you realistically expect to use. A low upfront cost can make sense when your total expected cartridge expense over the ownership period does not erase that saving.

An ink-tank printer may fit regular or high-volume printing

If you print often, the lower ongoing ink cost may compensate for the higher initial price. Estimate the break-even point from your own monthly page count and local prices rather than relying on a manufacturer’s volume cutoff or savings example.

Run scenarios if your volume changes

For a household whose printing varies, calculate the total at several monthly page counts. If a tank wins only under the highest-use scenario, the choice depends on whether that volume is realistic for the full ownership period, not just a busy month.

What the published comparisons can—and cannot—tell you

HP’s comparison and store pages are useful for its product details and its own cost calculations, but those calculations are manufacturer claims rather than independent market averages. HP Store also states a maximum of up to 18,000 black or 8,000 color pages per ink set for its Smart Tank Plus product family; this is a stated maximum, not a guaranteed yield for every model or print pattern. HP’s Smart Tank Plus page gives the product-family qualification.

Epson’s calculator claims are also manufacturer figures. Its UK methodology describes average-price data from IDC EMEA 2019 trackers for one regional calculator, while its Europe calculator references 2023 shipment data published in Q1 2024. Neither establishes current street prices for every region. Consumer Reports’ 2026 guide offers an independent evaluation framework and approximate model prices, but it does not provide a matched tank-versus-cartridge cost study for every printer.

Because printer and ink prices vary by region and model, the reliable answer is the total for your specific candidates and usage—not a single market-wide break-even figure.
