If you are stuck developing an Immortal, spend your first fragments on the star milestones that you can use immediately, not on skills for locked slots. Immortal quality (the “rarity” players usually mean) determines baseline strength and how much attributes improve when stars increase. Star development also improves the Immortal’s initial skill and opens the second skill slot at three stars and the third at seven stars, according to the documented 2020 player guides. Tower of Knowledge skills are a separate fragment expense, and later systems such as Immortal Specialization add different materials and progression rules.
The exact costs and availability can change with season and patch. Treat the star and slot rules below as the documented baseline, then confirm the price, level requirement and skill availability shown in your current client.
What Immortal rarity (quality) changes
Infinity Kingdom’s official-hosted player guide lists four quality tiers: Uncommon, Rare, Elite and Epic. The guide says strength rises with quality and that higher-quality Immortals receive larger attribute increases when they reach a new star level. In other words, quality affects both an Immortal’s starting position and the value of each star-up, rather than acting as a cosmetic label.

These four labels come from a GTArcade-hosted, player-made guide dated May 18, 2020 (Infinity Kingdom Immortal Upgrade GuideⅠ). The guide is a useful description of the basic system, not a current developer guarantee that every quality, cost or acquisition method is unchanged.

What a star upgrade actually does
Star development consumes Immortal Fragments. The documented guide states that developing an Immortal increases attributes by a percentage and upgrades the Immortal’s initial skill. The initial skill is the ability attached to that Immortal from the start; it is different from skills learned through the Tower of Knowledge.
The same 2020 documentation identifies two important slot milestones:
- Three stars: the second skill slot becomes available.
- Seven stars: the third skill slot becomes available.
Until a slot is open, a fragment purchase that unlocks a skill for that slot cannot provide an immediate equipable benefit. A second GTArcade-hosted player guide repeats the milestones and specifically cautions players not to unlock skills for slots they cannot yet use (Infinity Kingdom Immortal Upgrade GuideⅡ).

No current, complete fragment-cost schedule by quality and star is established in the available official material. Costs can also be affected by version, event or server progression. Use the number displayed in your client instead of copying a total from a 2020 guide.

How to choose between stars and Tower of Knowledge skills
Both choices can consume Immortal Fragments, so treat them as competing uses of one limited resource. There is no universally correct order for every element, troop type or roster. Use this sequence whenever you are deciding where the next batch of fragments goes:
- Identify the Immortal and its job. Decide whether it is a damage dealer, tank, support or utility pick that you expect to keep using. A star-up on a temporary placeholder can delay the development of the Immortal you actually need.
- Check the slots currently open. Confirm whether the Immortal is below three stars, between three and six stars, or at least seven stars. Do not pay to unlock a skill intended for a slot that is still locked.
- Inspect the live skill list. Read the skill’s current description, season restriction and level requirement in the Tower of Knowledge. Skills can move between seasons and their effects can change in a patch.
- Compare an immediate benefit with a threshold benefit. A star-up gives the documented attribute increase and initial-skill improvement now. A Tower skill is worthwhile only when its slot is open and the skill can be equipped and used in your current content.
- Keep a reserve for the next confirmed milestone. If the next star opens a slot soon, saving fragments can be more useful than spending them on a skill you cannot equip yet. Recheck the costs in the client before committing.

How Tower of Knowledge skills fit into progression
The Tower of Knowledge is the system used to unlock battle and utility skills. The player guides describe Immortal Fragments as the currency required to unlock these skills, which is why a new player can feel a conflict between improving stars and collecting abilities.
Skill availability is not permanent or universal. Official v2.9.9 notes dated September 3, 2026 provide a clear example: Psychic Vortex is obtained from the Wish Shop during Legendary Season. Its effect increases Magical Damage by 9% + 3% per level when the Immortal’s HP decreases by 10% or an Ultimate Skill is cast, and the effect can stack up to five times. Those numbers describe that named skill in that version; they are not a rule for every Tower skill or a promise that it is available to a new account immediately.

The same v2.9.9 notes move Energy Mastery to S2 and place Arcane Hunter, Divine Blessing and Eternal Battlelust in Conquest Season. Therefore, a build recommendation copied from an older guide can fail simply because the skill is not yet offered on your server or in your current season. Current-patch examples: why skill text must be version-aware
Horus illustrates the difference between a specific skill description and a general star rule. In the v2.9.9 notes, Horus is a Chaos Immortal in the back-row Magic position who commands Bowmen. His Royal Sarcophagus passive limits each instance of damage received to “19%-2%/level of Max HP.” His active skill deals Magical Damage to all enemies at “204%+28%/level,” with a 60% chance to apply Punishment for six seconds. Punishment increases damage received by 4.5% + 1.5% per level. Horus’s exclusive artifact raises the Punishment application chance to 100%.
Those percentages retain the game’s level notation: the value depends on the skill level, and the notes do not authorize silently converting it into one total at an unspecified level. They are also not evidence that every Horus star adds one of those percentages directly. Stars improve the Immortal’s attributes and initial skill under the documented system; the exact wording and scaling shown in the live skill panel control the current result.
Immortal Specialization is a separate layer

Specialization should be treated as a separate system, not as an alternate name for a star upgrade or a Tower of Knowledge unlock. It may use some of the same fragments while adding materials and requirements of its own. A practical free-to-play plan for a new account
A week-old account that has an Immortal around level 24 does not need to solve every progression system at once. Focus on making each fragment purchase usable:
1. Choose a core formation
Pick the Immortals that match the troops and roles you can actually field. Quality is a long-term advantage, but a team needs compatible roles and skills; do not replace a functioning role solely because another Immortal has a higher label.
2. Push the next useful star threshold
If your main Immortal is close to three stars, calculate the client’s current fragment requirement and consider saving for the second slot. If three stars are distant, smaller development steps still improve attributes and the initial skill, provided you intend to keep that Immortal.

3. Spend Tower fragments only on open, obtainable slots
Open the Tower of Knowledge, select the intended Immortal and verify both the slot and the season/source requirement. Skip a skill that cannot be equipped now, even if an old guide calls it essential.

4. Read every level and season qualifier
Named skills can have level scaling, stack limits, event sources or season gates. Record the exact text shown in your client rather than relying on a screenshot from another patch.
5. Keep separate notes for specialization
Master Marks, Master Insights and Well of Time progress belong to the specialization layer. Do not assume that completing a star milestone satisfies a specialization requirement or vice versa.
Common mistakes and how to correct them
- Buying a skill for a locked slot: wait until three or seven stars unlock the slot, then verify that the skill is still available.
- Treating rarity as an automatic win: compare role, initial skill, star development and usable Tower skills; quality alone does not guarantee the best result in every formation.
- Copying an old fragment total: the 2020 guides document the mechanics but do not provide a verified current cost table. Use the live price.
- Assuming every named skill is available from the beginning: v2.9.9 demonstrates season-specific access and skill moves. Check your server’s current season.
- Confusing specialization with stars: specialization uses additional materials and Well of Time stages, so inspect that system separately.
- Using a patch-specific percentage as a universal rule: Horus and Psychic Vortex values are examples from v2.9.9, not formulas for all Immortals.
Level caps and dated progression information
An official-channel v2.8.8 notice from November 2025 says level-60 Immortals and Tier 35 advancement apply only after entering Legendary Season (v2.8.8 patch notice). The later v2.9.9 notes examined here do not reconfirm those caps. Treat the notice as dated context: the level, tier and season gates shown in your current client take priority.
