To install an Infinity Fabric modpack, use Minecraft Java Edition, select the exact Minecraft and Fabric Loader versions named by the pack, install the matching Fabric API and other dependencies, and test the complete client pack before creating a server. A working multiplayer server then requires the same Minecraft release, loader, Fabric API, pack files, and configuration on every client. The server should contain only mods that support dedicated-server use; visual, HUD, menu, and other client-only jars belong on players’ computers, not in the server’s mods folder.
This guide covers a launcher-based client installation, a Windows server, a Linux or VPS server, Java requirements, memory and hosting decisions, safe updates, and the failure messages that most often prevent players from joining.
What Infinity Fabric needs before you install it
“Infinity Fabric” is a Fabric-based Minecraft modpack, so the pack’s manifest is the authority for its Minecraft version, Fabric Loader build, mod versions, and configuration. Do not substitute the newest Minecraft patch or loader simply because it is available. Fabric documentation notes that a mod working on one patch can fail on another; a mod built for 1.21.8, for example, may not work on 1.21.11.
Required components
- Minecraft Java Edition: Fabric is for the Java edition, not the separate Bedrock edition.
- A matching Fabric Loader: Use the loader version specified by the Infinity Fabric manifest or server pack.
- Fabric API: Most Fabric mods require it, and its release must target the same Minecraft version.
- Compatible mod jars: Each mod must support the selected Minecraft release and Fabric loader. Some mods are client-only, some are server-only, and some must be installed on both sides.
- A Java runtime appropriate to the Minecraft release: The required major version changes between releases.
- A clean instance or profile: Keeping the pack separate prevents unrelated mods and configuration files from contaminating it.
Record the pack’s exact versions
Before downloading anything, open the pack manifest, release notes, or documented server pack and write down:

- Minecraft version, including the complete patch number.
- Fabric Loader version.
- Fabric API version.
- Every required dependency, such as a library mod.
- Which jars are client-only, server-only, or required on both sides.
- The pack release or file version that your friends will use.
If a dedicated server pack is provided, prefer it over exporting the client instance. A client export often includes graphics, menus, shaders, and other files that cannot run on a headless server.
Choose a safe way to install the client pack
Modrinth App
The Modrinth App can create a Fabric profile without manually assembling every file. Create a new profile, choose Fabric as the loader, select the Minecraft version required by Infinity Fabric, and add the pack’s content. Check that the app has selected the same loader and game versions as the manifest before launching.

Manual installation
Manual installation is useful when a pack author supplies a zip, a custom configuration, or a server/client split.
- Install Minecraft Java Edition and run the selected vanilla version once so its game directory is created.
- Run the Fabric installer and choose the Client tab. Select the exact Minecraft and Fabric Loader versions from the pack documentation, then install to the profile or game directory you intend to use.
- Open the profile’s
modsdirectory and copy in the pack’s mod jars. Install the matching Fabric API and every dependency listed by the mod pages or manifest. - Copy the pack’s
config, resource-pack, shader, and other documented files. Do not copy a server-only jar into the client. - Launch the Fabric profile once. If the launcher reports a missing dependency, stop and install the named dependency for the same Minecraft and loader versions rather than downloading the newest unrelated release.
Download mods from established distribution sources such as Modrinth or CurseForge, and use their Minecraft-version and Fabric-loader filters. Avoid random re-upload sites: a jar with the right name can still target a different game version or contain unwanted changes.

Test the complete client before building a server
Fabric’s server guidance recommends installing and testing the client mods first. This separates mod compatibility problems from networking and server configuration problems.
- Launch the pack with no extra, unlisted mods.
- Create or open a disposable test world.
- Use the features that matter to your group: world generation, dimensions, machines, inventories, key bindings, map displays, and any required integrations.
- Exit normally and inspect the launcher log and crash report if anything fails.
- Resolve missing classes, dependency prompts, mixin errors, and version warnings before setting up the server.
A client that reaches the title screen is not necessarily ready for multiplayer. Test the actual gameplay systems and verify that the pack’s configuration files are present. Keep a copy of the working profile; it becomes your reference when you build the server and when you troubleshoot a later update.
Java versions for Fabric servers
Choose Java from the Minecraft release, not from the Fabric brand. The headless-server guidance gives this matrix:

On a computer with several Java installations, verify the runtime that the launch script actually calls. A terminal command such as java -version shows the default executable; a hosting panel may use a separate runtime setting. A Java mismatch can produce an immediate “class file version” error or cause the server to stop before it creates its normal files.

Set up an Infinity Fabric server on Windows
Install the server with Fabric’s installer
- Create a dedicated folder such as
C:MinecraftInfinityFabric. Do not place the server in the Windows system folder or in a client profile directory. - Open the Fabric installer and select the Server tab.
- Choose the exact Minecraft version and Fabric Loader version recorded from the pack manifest.
- Select the dedicated server folder as the installation location. Enable the option to download the Minecraft server jar if the installer presents it.
- Run the installation. The folder should contain a Fabric server jar and the files needed to start it.
- Use the installer’s option to generate
start.bat(or create an equivalent script) instead of typing a different loader command by hand.
First launch and EULA
- Run
start.batonce. The server will create files and normally stop while it waits for the Minecraft EULA to be accepted. - Open
eula.txtand change onlyeula=falsetoeula=trueafter reading and accepting Minecraft’s EULA. - Start the script again and wait for the console message indicating that the server has finished loading.
- Stop it with the
stopcommand in the server console. Do not close the window while the world is saving.
Install the server-side files
- Copy the server-compatible mod jars into the server’s
modsdirectory. Create that directory if the first launch did not create it. - Copy the pack’s documented server configuration files into the matching locations. Preserve the folder structure.
- Keep client-only visual, menu, HUD, replay, and shader-support mods out of the server. If a mod’s documentation says it is required on both sides, install it on both sides.
- Start the server again and inspect the log for dependency errors before inviting players.
Memory flags and the launch script
A generated script may contain flags such as -Xms1024m -Xmx2048m. These are example starting values, not an Infinity Fabric capacity guarantee. The correct heap depends on the pack, world, simulation distance, other services on the machine, and the number of concurrent players. Increase memory only after observing actual garbage-collection pauses, out-of-memory errors, or sustained usage; assigning nearly all system RAM can make the operating system and file cache unstable.
Set up the server on Linux or a VPS
Prepare the directory and runtime
- Create a non-root account for the server and a dedicated directory, for example
~/servers/infinity-fabric. - Install the Java major version required by the Minecraft release and verify it with
java -version. - Install the download tools needed to obtain the installer or server jar, such as your distribution’s standard HTTPS download utility.
- Place the Fabric server installation and pack files in the dedicated directory. Keep backups outside the live world folder.
Launch headlessly
Use the command generated by the Fabric installer or the server pack’s documented command. A typical form is:

The nogui option is appropriate for a VPS without a desktop. Run the process inside a service manager or terminal multiplexer so it continues after you disconnect, and configure automatic restart only after you have confirmed that a crash loop will not overwrite useful logs.
Accept the EULA and add mods
- Launch once and let the server generate
eula.txt,server.properties, the world directory, and the logs directory. - Set
eula=trueafter accepting the EULA, then launch again. - Stop the server cleanly, copy only server-compatible jars into
mods, and copy the documented configuration files. - Start again and watch
logs/latest.logfor a completed startup and for warnings about missing dependencies.
A VPS also needs a firewall rule for the configured Minecraft port, operating-system updates, restricted file permissions, and a backup plan. Do not expose remote administration ports or the server console unnecessarily.

Make client and server versions match
Every player should receive one known-good pack archive or launcher profile. The following values must align:

Do not blindly synchronize every jar. A server must omit client-only files, while a player’s client may need visual and interface mods that have no server counterpart.
Why Fabric servers reject mods or players
The Minecraft patch is wrong
Compare the complete version string in the launcher, server log, and manifest. “1.20” is not precise enough when the pack requires 1.20.1 or 1.20.4. Replace the jar with the build for the exact release rather than downgrading or upgrading one component at random.
The loader is wrong
Fabric Loader and Fabric API are separate. Installing Fabric Loader does not supply Fabric API. Conversely, installing the right API on the wrong loader or game version will not solve the problem. Reinstall the loader specified by the pack and remove duplicate loader or API jars.

A dependency is missing
Read the first dependency error in the log, not only the final crash line. Install the named library for the same Minecraft release and Fabric loader, then remove older duplicate copies. If the mod page lists a required dependency, treat that requirement as part of the mod installation.
A client-only mod is on the server
Rendering, shader, menu, HUD, replay, and many key-binding mods assume a graphical client. Remove the offending jar from the server and leave it in the player profile if it is supported there. If the server log names a class from a graphics library, this is a strong indication that the jar is in the wrong side’s mods directory.

Compare the mod list, file versions, configuration directory, and resource files. A player who copied a newer client export can be rejected even when the Minecraft and loader versions look correct. Distribute a fresh, immutable pack archive for each server release and record the release identifier in the server announcement.
The VPS has no graphical interface
That is normal for a dedicated server. Use the headless command with nogui, install the required Java runtime and download tools, and manage the process through SSH, a service manager, or a terminal multiplexer. Do not attempt to start a desktop launcher on the VPS.
Launcher, manual, and hosting choices

Before choosing a host, confirm Fabric support for the exact Minecraft release, Java-version selection, unrestricted mod and configuration file access, automated backups, geographic location, port and firewall controls, and whether a custom server pack can be uploaded. No authoritative Infinity Fabric-specific RAM, CPU, bandwidth, or player-count figure is established; size the machine through testing with your actual pack and expected group.
Updating Infinity Fabric safely
- Read the new pack manifest and identify changes to Minecraft, Fabric Loader, Fabric API, mods, and configs.
- Back up the world, server properties, configuration directory, and current mod list.
- Clone the live server into a test directory rather than upgrading the only copy.
- Install the new Java version if the Minecraft release requires one.
- Update the client profile and test a copy of the world. Check world generation, dimensions, inventories, and mod integrations.
- Update the server with the matching server pack, then start it without allowing players to connect.
- Read the startup log, join with a matching test client, and verify that the world saves and shuts down cleanly.
- Announce the exact pack release to players and keep the previous server backup until the new release has proved stable.
Operational checklist
- Keep the live server directory separate from downloads and backups.
- Use a whitelist for a private friends’ server and grant operator permission only when needed.
- Back up the world before mod changes and on a regular schedule; test restoring a backup instead of assuming the archive works.
- Watch logs after every mod update and save the first error, timestamp, and affected player.
- Do not remove world-affecting mods from an existing world without checking their documentation; removal can delete blocks, entities, or dimensions.
- Document the Java version, Minecraft version, loader, API, mod filenames, config archive, server address, and backup location.
- Use a staging copy for experimental mods and keep the known-good pack untouched.
Bottom line
The reliable Infinity Fabric workflow is strict version control: identify the pack’s Minecraft and loader versions, install the matching Fabric API and dependencies, prove the full client pack works, then build a server with the same versions and only server-compatible mods. Select Java from the Minecraft release matrix, accept the EULA during first launch, test the server before inviting players, and treat logs and backups as part of the installation rather than emergency extras.
