Venus reaches inferior conjunction in the early hours of October 24, 2026 (UTC), when it passes between Earth and the Sun. The National Astronomical Observatory of Japan (NAOJ) lists 03:44 UTC (12:44 Japan Standard Time), while an independent computed calendar gives about 03:32 UTC. For practical planning, treat the alignment as occurring around 03:30–03:45 UTC on October 24—the night of October 23–24 in many time zones.

What Venus’s inferior conjunction means

Venus is an inferior planet because its orbit is inside Earth’s orbit. At inferior conjunction, Venus is on the Sun-facing side of its orbit and lies approximately along the Earth–Sun line. From Earth, the alignment is a conjunction in ecliptic longitude; NAOJ records it as Δλ = 0°.

This is not the same as a transit of Venus. Venus’s orbital plane is tilted relative to Earth’s, so it normally passes above or below the Sun’s visible disk. A transit occurs only when the alignment also happens near one of the points where the two orbital planes intersect. No transit is expected for this 2026 conjunction.

When the 2026 conjunction occurs

Source and time standard Listed time Use in planning
National Astronomical Observatory of Japan (JCST) October 24, 2026, 12:44 JCST 03:44 UTC
Asteria Star computed calendar (UTC) Approximately October 24, 2026, 03:32 UTC Confirms the early-UTC timing

The difference of roughly 12 minutes reflects normal differences in ephemeris calculations and rounding, not a different astronomical event. The conjunction spans the observing night of October 23–24 for locations where local midnight falls before 03:30–03:45 UTC. Convert the UTC time to your local zone before making a plan; the exact clock date can differ east or west of Greenwich.

Why Venus disappears at conjunction

On October 23–24, Venus is only about 6.5–6.6 degrees from the Sun in the sky. That small angular separation places it in intense solar glare. Asteria Star therefore describes Venus as not observable at the conjunction itself, and the event is not a naked-eye spectacle.

Venus is also near its thinnest visible phase. As the planet approaches inferior conjunction, the Sun illuminates less of the hemisphere facing Earth, producing a very narrow crescent while the apparent disk grows larger. The combination can be attractive through a telescope, but the glare and tiny separation make the observation difficult and hazardous.

Can you see Venus near October 23–24?

Unaided-eye viewing

Do not expect to see Venus at the exact alignment. A separate 2026 visibility calendar places Venus within 8.5 degrees of the Sun from October 19 through October 28 and labels this interval “combust.” Local latitude, a clear and unobstructed horizon, twilight brightness, atmospheric transparency and the planet’s altitude all affect whether a brief glimpse is possible before sunrise or after sunset on dates near conjunction.

Telescope viewing of the crescent

EarthSky notes that keen observers in suitable locations may be able to find Venus through a telescope near the conjunction, including the thin crescent. This is an advanced target rather than a casual observing opportunity. The planet may be easier to follow several days before or after October 24, when its separation from the Sun increases slightly.

Non-negotiable solar safety

Never aim binoculars or a telescope toward the Sun—or anywhere near it—without a properly certified solar filter designed for the specific instrument and installed at the objective end. Ordinary sunglasses, photographic filters, improvised materials and filters fitted at an eyepiece do not protect eyesight. Optical equipment can concentrate sunlight instantly enough to cause permanent eye injury. If you cannot verify the filter’s certification, attachment and condition, do not use the instrument for this search.

Choosing a safer observing approach

Goal Best timing Equipment and risk
Mark the astronomical event Use 03:30–03:45 UTC on October 24 No equipment; Venus itself is lost in glare
Try to detect the thin crescent Several days before or after conjunction, with increasing separation Telescope only for experienced observers using certified solar-safety procedures
Watch Venus return as a bright planet Following weeks, before sunrise Naked eye from a clear eastern horizon; wait for adequate twilight contrast

For most readers, the third option offers the best balance of safety and reward. Follow Venus’s position on successive mornings rather than attempting to sweep close to the Sun with optics.

What happens after inferior conjunction?

Venus leaves its evening apparition and shifts into the dawn sky in the weeks after October 24. Its angular distance from the Sun increases, making it progressively easier to find before sunrise. The first naked-eye sighting is location-dependent: observers at different latitudes and with different horizons and twilight conditions will not share one universal date.

Timeanddate lists Venus’s next greatest western elongation for January 3, 2027. That milestone identifies the planet’s established morning-star phase, when it reaches its widest apparent separation west of the Sun. Continue checking local sunrise times and choose an unobstructed eastern horizon for the clearest views.

How often this alignment repeats

Successive inferior conjunctions of Venus are separated by about 584 days, or roughly 19.5 months. The interval follows Venus’s synodic cycle as Earth and Venus return to similar Sun–planet–Earth geometry. The repeating cycle does not make every conjunction equally easy to observe: the orbital tilt and the angle of the alignment determine how far Venus appears from the Sun and whether the planet can be spotted safely in twilight.

Key takeaways for October 2026

  • Inferior conjunction means Venus passes between Earth and the Sun as seen from Earth; it is not a transit.
  • The best single time reference is about 03:30–03:45 UTC on October 24, 2026, with NAOJ specifying 03:44 UTC.
  • Venus lies only about 6.5–6.6 degrees from the Sun and is overwhelmed by glare at the exact conjunction.
  • The planet presents a very thin crescent with a relatively large apparent disk; telescopic attempts are for experienced observers only.
  • Never use unfiltered binoculars or a telescope near the Sun.
  • Venus reappears in the predawn sky during the following weeks and heads toward greatest western elongation on January 3, 2027.
