A good inexpensive wireless security camera system depends on how many cameras you need and whether you prefer a hub with local recording or standalone cameras with a memory card or cloud service. Compare the complete setup—not just the camera price—including storage, any hub, power and charging, Wi-Fi requirements, and subscription costs. Reolink’s Home Hub with Argus 3E is a candidate for a multi-camera setup; TP-Link’s Tapo TC82 is a battery-camera option with local microSD recording. Neither is established here as the cheapest or an independently tested winner.
Start with the kind of setup you need
“Wireless” usually means the camera connects over Wi-Fi and may run on a battery, rather than requiring a video cable to a recorder. It does not necessarily mean the camera works without internet or a dependable network. For example, Google specifies a Wi-Fi internet connection and the Google Home app for its cameras. Check each model’s requirements against the location where you plan to install it.
Choose a hub-based kit for several cameras
A hub-based kit can make sense when you want a coordinated multi-camera setup and centralized storage. Reolink says its Home Hub with Argus 3E can connect up to eight Reolink IP cameras. That is a maximum connection capability, not a statement that every kit includes eight cameras. Check the exact kit contents and supported-camera list: Reolink says Home Hub series devices work with Reolink PoE and plug-in Wi-Fi cameras and most recently released battery Wi-Fi cameras, with exceptions including 2MP battery cameras and 4G cameras. Reolink Home Hub compatibility and kit details
Choose standalone battery cameras for a smaller setup
A standalone camera can avoid the upfront cost of a hub if you need only one or two cameras. The tradeoff is that recording may depend on a separately purchased memory card, a compatible hub, or a paid cloud service. Confirm how each option works before buying; a camera described as wire-free may still rely on Wi-Fi and internet for some functions.

Compare the documented options
| Option | What the manufacturer describes | Costs and conditions to check |
|---|---|---|
| Reolink Home Hub with Argus 3E | Hub-based kit; the hub supports up to eight Reolink IP cameras. Reolink | Verify the cameras included, the exact compatibility list, local-storage configuration, and current kit price. |
| Reolink Home Hub Mini with Argus PT | Hub kit with a microSD slot supporting cards up to 1 TB. Reolink estimates up to one year of local storage for two battery cameras, assuming each records 300 seconds per day. Reolink | The one-year figure is a manufacturer estimate tied to that recording assumption, not a retention guarantee. The page says 24/7 recording is available only for low-bitrate streams and that battery cameras may need a firmware update for hub support. |
| TP-Link Tapo TC82 | Battery-powered 2K camera with local microSD support up to 512 GB; optional centralized storage through a Tapo H200 hub and optional Tapo Care cloud service with 30-day video clip history. | Google Nest Cam (Battery) | Google’s US store listing describes three hours of free event video history. Google’s specifications say camera video streams to cloud storage with Google Home Premium. Google specifications; Google Store listing | The US store displayed a $199.99 starting price when accessed in 2026; this is a volatile listing, not a like-for-like market comparison. Work out the full cost before calling a system inexpensive
A low camera price can hide the cost of recording and operating the system. Compare configurations with the same number of cameras and similar retention needs, then add the parts and services each one requires.
- First purchase: Count the cameras included and add any required hub, memory card, mounting hardware, or optional solar panel.
- Recording: Check whether local storage is supported, whether storage media is included, and how cloud retention or other paid features are priced.
- Ongoing ownership: Include any recurring subscription and consider whether battery charging or wired power is more practical at your installation.
- Expansion: If you may add cameras later, confirm the hub’s limits and which camera models it supports.
There is no reliable universal cheapest pick among these options without current, comparable prices for the full configurations. A camera-only price is not enough to establish the least expensive system.

Check recording, battery, and network limits
Storage changes what you can keep
The Tapo TC82 supports a separately purchased microSD card up to 512 GB, an optional Tapo H200 hub for centralized storage, or Tapo Care cloud service, which TP-Link describes as offering 30-day video clip history. The Tapo C403 also supports a separately purchased card up to 512 GB, while its cloud storage requires Tapo Care. These are different recording arrangements; compare the features and costs that matter to you rather than treating storage capacity alone as a measure of retention.

Treat battery-life figures as conditional
TP-Link says the TC82 can last up to 180 days, but qualifies the claim: “180-day battery life is based on Tapo laboratory tests with 250s of use per day.” The stated use includes recording and watching live views; TP-Link says actual battery life varies with settings, usage, router specifications, and environmental factors. A camera with frequent activity, live viewing, or different network conditions may need charging sooner. TP-Link’s battery-life qualification
Check Wi-Fi coverage and upload needs
Confirm the camera’s supported Wi-Fi band and whether the signal reaches its installation point. The Tapo C403 specifies 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi. Google recommends at least 2 Mbps upload per camera for optimal 1080p video quality for the applicable camera models on its specifications page; check the specific model because that page covers multiple products. Use resolution and weather ratings in context
The TC82 is described as 2K, while TP-Link lists the C403 at a maximum of 1080p. Resolution is only one factor: placement, field of view, night performance, network reliability, and the detail you need to identify an event all affect whether a camera suits a location. The specifications cited here do not establish independent comparative image quality.

For outdoor placement, check the camera’s weather rating and whether its power arrangement fits the location. TP-Link lists the C403 as IP65 weather resistant; an optional Tapo A201 solar panel is sold separately. Confirm the requirements for your site and the exact product configuration rather than assuming all battery cameras have the same outdoor rating or accessories.
Quick Recap
A practical buying checklist
- Count locations. Decide how many cameras you need now, and whether you expect to expand the system.
- Choose hub or standalone. Compare a multi-camera kit’s included equipment with the cost of buying individual cameras and any hub separately.
- Pick a recording method. Decide whether local card storage, hub storage, cloud retention, or a combination meets your needs; check which media and services cost extra.
- Verify power and network. Check charging or wired-power practicality, Wi-Fi band and coverage, internet requirements, and upload capacity.
- Check placement-specific features. Confirm weather resistance for outdoor cameras and assess resolution, night view, and coverage for each location.
- Calculate total cost. Add all required hardware and any recurring service for the period you care about, then compare setups with equivalent camera counts and recording needs.
