Yes—an Environment Agency assessment links the deaths of fish and eels in Brislington Brook to chemical-contaminated firewater from an industrial-unit blaze on Emery Road. The agency confirmed that runoff entered the brook and moved downstream, but the investigation had not yet established the complete chemical mixture, total wildlife mortality or an all-clear for the waterway.
What happened at Brislington Brook?
A fire broke out at an industrial unit on Emery Road in Bristol on 1 September 2026. Firefighting water subsequently escaped from the site and entered Brislington Brook. Bristol24/7 reported on 11 October 2026 that dead fish and eels had been found in the brook, with dead birds also reported later near St Anne’s Woods.
People noticed foam and a foul smell in the brook the day after the fire. Wildlife deaths were observed downstream rather than being limited to the industrial premises, consistent with a pollutant being carried by the watercourse.

What was observed
- Dead fish and eels in Brislington Brook.
- Dead birds reported near St Anne’s Woods.
- Foam and an unpleasant smell reported the day after the fire.
- No final mortality count published in the available report.
Did the fire kill the fish and eels?
The strongest official finding is that chemicals in firewater runoff entered the brook and spread downstream. The Environment Agency said, “Sampling confirmed that chemicals from the firewater run-off entered the brook and spread downstream.” That establishes a pollution pathway from the fire to the waterway and provides the basis for linking the incident with the wildlife deaths.

It does not yet identify one specific substance as the sole cause. The agency explained: “Firewater incidents are complex and involve multiple pollutants. Our assessment indicates the eel deaths may have resulted from a combination of factors, including multiple chemicals acting together and the levels of pollution changing throughout the incident.”
In practical terms, the agency’s position is that contaminated runoff was involved, while the precise combination of chemicals, exposure levels and timing remained unresolved when the report was published.

How firewater can affect a brook
Water used to extinguish an industrial fire can pick up substances from burning materials, stored products, damaged containers, smoke deposits and residues at the site. If that water reaches a drain or stream without effective containment, it can carry several pollutants at once. Concentrations may also rise or fall as water is released, diluted or moved downstream.

Is Brislington Brook safe now?
The published information does not provide an all-clear. The Environment Agency’s investigation was still continuing, and Friends of Brislington Brook asked Bristol City Council to retest the water. Until authorities issue a clear safety statement, people were urged to avoid contact with the brook.
What avoiding contact means
- Do not wade, swim or allow children or pets into the water.
- Do not handle dead fish, eels or birds found in or beside the brook.
- Do not collect water, sediment or wildlife from the affected stretch.
- Follow current notices from the Environment Agency and Bristol City Council rather than relying on the disappearance of foam or smell.
These precautions matter because pollutants may remain in water or sediment after visible signs fade, and the absence of an odour does not prove that contamination has cleared.

- Freshwater pond test kit + saltwater range chart – Built for pond water testing, with a color chart that also includes saltwater ranges. Includes glass test tubes, caps, transfer pipette, and all required reagents.
What is still unknown?
The report did not publish a final list of chemicals, laboratory concentrations, a total number of dead animals, the exact downstream distance affected or a date for water-quality clearance. It also did not establish whether every reported wildlife death had the same cause. Further sampling and the Environment Agency’s continuing investigation are needed to resolve those points.

What further reporting should establish
- Which pollutants were detected and at what concentrations.
- Whether contamination persisted in water, sediment or both.
- The confirmed mortality count by species.
- How far downstream the impact extended.
- When repeat testing supports an official all-clear.
Bottom line for residents
The Emery Road fire was followed by chemical-contaminated firewater entering Brislington Brook, and the Environment Agency linked that pollution pathway to the deaths of fish and eels. Dead birds, foam and a foul smell were also reported. The cause is therefore more specific than an unexplained wildlife die-off, but not yet narrowed to one chemical or a completed mortality assessment. Avoid the brook until the relevant authorities publish clearance information.
