Industrial Ethernet is not a single protocol, and fieldbus is not a single physical technology. The right comparison is between the specific network, protocol, devices, and timing requirements in a plant—not between two broad labels. Time-Sensitive Networking (TSN) adds mechanisms for more predictable traffic on bridged Ethernet, but it does not by itself select an application protocol or make existing equipment compatible.
What do “industrial Ethernet” and “fieldbus” mean?
Fieldbus is a broad term for industrial digital networks that connect controllers with devices such as sensors, actuators, motor starters, and I/O. It does not identify one physical layer, topology, or protocol. Industrial Ethernet describes a broad category of Ethernet-based industrial networks and protocols; it, too, is not one protocol with one set of timing or configuration behaviors.
The terms can obscure how much protocols share. ODVA’s DeviceNet is a digital, multi-drop fieldbus that uses CAN at the data-link layer and CIP at upper layers. EtherNet/IP uses the CIP family too, but adapts it to standard Ethernet and TCP/IP. That example shows that application services can persist across different network technologies; it is not a complete taxonomy of either category.

How should you compare the options?
Compare the installed or proposed implementations against the application. The table gives questions to ask; it is a decision framework, not a performance ranking.
| Decision area | What to establish |
|---|---|
| Real-time behavior | Required cycle time, synchronization, latency, jitter, packet-loss limits, and recovery behavior. |
| Network architecture | Existing or required media, topology, bridges or switches, and segmentation. |
| Protocol and device ecosystem | Which controllers, devices, profiles, and application services interoperate. |
| Configuration and operations | How schedules, streams, diagnostics, security, and changes are configured and maintained. |
| Reliability and safety | Required redundancy, failure behavior, recovery, and safety functions—and which are supported. |
| Migration effort | What can remain, what needs gateways or replacement, and the commissioning and downtime costs. |
For protocol-specific documentation and infrastructure guidance, ODVA’s document library is a starting point for its technologies. The actual installed equipment and its documentation still determine what a plant can reuse.

What does TSN add to Ethernet?
Time-Sensitive Networking is a family of IEEE 802 standards and selected configurations for bridged networks. IEEE’s TSN Task Group describes its aim as deterministic connectivity, including bounded latency, low packet-delay variation, and low packet loss. These are engineering goals supported by mechanisms and configuration, not a blanket guarantee attached to every Ethernet network.
The TSN standards include mechanisms for timing and synchronization, scheduled traffic, frame preemption, per-stream filtering and policing, stream reservation enhancements, asynchronous traffic shaping, and frame replication and elimination for reliability. A profile selects coordinated features and options for a particular use case. TSN does not name the application protocol, demonstrate that existing field devices support a profile, or eliminate network engineering and configuration.

Industrial automation profile status
As of October 11, 2026, IEEE lists IEEE/IEC 60802-2026 as an active standard published on June 29, 2026. It defines TSN profiles for industrial automation, selecting features, options, configurations, protocols, and procedures for bridges, end stations, and LANs. The standard also specifies YANG modules for digital data-sheet information and remote procedure calls or actions.
This publication date matters when reading older material. For example, ODVA’s 2022 conference-paper abstract discussed possible TSN integration for EtherNet/IP while the industrial profile’s status was still uncertain. It is useful as dated context for implementation questions, not as a current statement that the profile remains unfinished or that a particular migration is available.

What should a migration plan account for?
Start with the control behavior the plant needs and the equipment already installed. Replacing a network technology is not automatically the goal: the application may be served by retaining devices, changing infrastructure, introducing a gateway, or replacing components, depending on protocol support and requirements. The available evidence does not establish one migration path that works for all installations.

- Inventory the system. List controllers, drives, sensors, safety functions, bridges or switches, media, and the protocols and profiles each device supports.
- Write down timing and recovery requirements. Specify the needed cycle time, synchronization, jitter, loss tolerance, and behavior after a fault rather than assuming a network label guarantees them.
- Check the target architecture. Verify that end stations and bridges support the required protocol and, if applicable, the selected TSN profile. The industrial profile covers bridges, end stations, and LANs, but its publication does not make older devices profile-capable.
- Plan operations and staging. Decide how configuration, diagnostics, security, maintenance, commissioning, and downtime will change. Determine whether work can be staged by machine or cell and what gateways or replacements that would require.
- Validate the specific design. Confirm interoperability and failure behavior for the actual devices and configuration before treating a proposed migration as an upgrade path.
PROFINET over TSN
PROFIBUS & PROFINET International’s PROFINET over TSN guideline refers to the industrial TSN profile. The organization describes the guideline as distributed specification material and cautions that it is not itself an industrial standard acknowledged by a standards body. Treat it as protocol-organization guidance, distinct from the published IEEE/IEC 60802-2026 standard.
EtherNet/IP and TSN
ODVA’s 2022 paper considered the impact of TSN on EtherNet/IP technologies, including bridges and end stations and possible mapping of CIP connections to TSN streams. That discussion predates publication of IEEE/IEC 60802-2026; it does not establish that every installed EtherNet/IP system can adopt TSN without equipment, configuration, or engineering changes.
EtherCAT segments in TSN networks
The EtherCAT Technology Group’s whitepaper page, dated July 30, 2018, describes an approach for integrating EtherCAT segments into TSN networks. Its proposal can require an upgrade at the MainDevice and changes to connecting bridges while leaving SubDevices unchanged. This is a dated vendor-organization architecture proposal, not a universal migration guarantee or evidence that every implementation will have the same requirements.
