Indonesian authorities released 20 protected green sea turtles (Chelonia mydas) into the ocean off Serangan Island in southern Bali on October 13, 2026. The turtles were rescued three days earlier from an unmanned boat after residents reported suspected smuggling activity. Two of the 22 turtles remained sick and were still receiving treatment, according to the Associated Press and Bali police.

What happened off Serangan Island

Bali’s Regional Police Water and Air Unit found 22 live green sea turtles aboard an unmanned boat off Serangan Beach on October 10, according to the Indonesian National Police’s October 12 account. The waters are off Serangan Island in South Denpasar, southern Bali, an area also called Turtle Island in the Associated Press report.

Residents supplied information about suspected turtle-smuggling activity, prompting the investigation. When officers reached the boat, the suspected smugglers had already fled. Police therefore described the incident as an alleged or suspected smuggling attempt; the available accounts do not report a conviction or identify an arrested suspect.

The turtles were taken for checks at a conservation center on Serangan Island. After the animals were assessed, officials transported 20 of them to the shore and released them into the sea on Tuesday, October 13. The other two were sick and remained under treatment.

October 2026 incident timeline

Date Event
October 10, 2026 Bali police found 22 live green turtles on an unmanned boat off Serangan Beach/Island in South Denpasar after residents reported suspected activity.
October 12, 2026 The Indonesian National Police published its account of the seizure and said coordination involved the Bali Natural Resources Conservation Agency (BKSDA).
October 13, 2026 Authorities released 20 turtles from the Serangan Island conservation facility; two sick turtles stayed for treatment.

Why the turtles were released in stages

Release followed the authorities’ checks rather than occurring immediately after the seizure. The conservation-center assessment allowed officials to distinguish the 20 turtles ready to return to the ocean from the two that still required care. The contemporaneous reporting does not provide a recovery timetable for the remaining animals.

The police account says handling was coordinated with the Bali Natural Resources Conservation Agency. Green sea turtles are protected wildlife in Indonesia, so capturing, keeping or trading them is prohibited under the country’s wildlife-protection framework. Bali Water and Air Police official Gusti Agung Purnama Wirahadi said, “We hope that no one will dare to capture, keep, or trade these protected species anymore,” as reported by the Associated Press.

What is known—and not known—about the alleged smuggling

  • Known: all 22 turtles were alive when found on the boat.
  • Known: residents’ information led police to investigate suspected activity near Serangan.
  • Known: the boat was unmanned when officers arrived.
  • Not established in the available reports: who owned the boat, where the turtles were headed, whether any suspect was arrested, or whether anyone was convicted.

Those distinctions matter: “smuggling raid” describes the enforcement context, while the evidence publicly reported so far supports only an alleged attempt.

How this differs from Bali’s June–July turtle case

The October rescue is separate from a case involving 21 green turtles seized in the Pegametan/Sumberkima area in June 2026. Indonesia’s Ministry of Marine Affairs and Fisheries said those animals were taken to the Turtle Conservation and Education Center for quarantine, observation and veterinary examinations. After a technical assessment found them fit for release, they were released at Serangan on July 7.

Case Seizure Animals Outcome reported
October incident October 10, 2026, off Serangan Island, South Denpasar 22 found alive 20 released October 13; two remained sick and under treatment
June–July incident June 2026, Pegametan/Sumberkima area 21 seized Released at Serangan on July 7 after quarantine, observation, veterinary examinations and a technical fitness assessment

The June–July account specifically names the Turtle Conservation and Education Center and describes its quarantine and veterinary process. The October report says only that the 20 released turtles underwent final checks at a conservation center; it does not identify that facility as the same center.

Why green sea turtles matter

Chelonia mydas is the species involved in both Bali cases. The Associated Press cited a 2022 global study by Arizona State University researchers reporting that 56% of sea-turtle killings occurred during the 1990–2020 period. That figure describes the study’s historical period; it is not a current annual rate and does not measure the specific Bali incident.

Rank #4

The October release also illustrates why wildlife cases often involve a conservation step between seizure and return to the sea. Authorities must first determine which animals are healthy enough to travel and survive after release, while sick individuals remain in care. In this case, that process resulted in 20 releases and continued treatment for two turtles rather than an all-at-once release.

What happens next

The reported operation established that the turtles were recovered and that most were returned to the ocean, but it did not announce a completed prosecution. Any later arrests, charges or convictions would need to be confirmed by Indonesian authorities. For now, the clearest outcome is the October 13 release of 20 protected green turtles and the ongoing treatment of the remaining two.
