Officials in Central Kalimantan rescued a female orangutan named Ira after residents found her in a burned forest area on Indonesian Borneo. The roughly 20-year-old animal appeared to be searching for food. A preliminary examination found no obvious wounds or breathing problems, but a wildlife-medicine worker said her abdominal circumference suggested starvation.

What happened to Ira

Residents reported Ira’s location to local authorities after spotting her in fire-damaged forest in Central Kalimantan. Muriansyah, chief of the local natural-resources agency, said officials believed she had moved through the burned area looking for food.

Rescuers anesthetized Ira and collected her from a tree with a net before transferring her to an agency facility. The initial examination found no apparent injury and no obvious respiratory problem. Ichlasul Khaerul, a medical staffer with the Orangutan Foundation International, said her body condition—particularly her abdominal circumference—probably indicated starvation. The assessment is preliminary; her recovery and ability to forage will determine what happens next.

How rescuers treat orangutans after fires

Wildlife teams do not automatically return a rescued orangutan to the forest. They first stabilize the animal, document its condition and evaluate whether the surrounding habitat can support it.

Safe capture and examination

Measured anesthesia allows veterinarians to handle a large, stressed animal without dangerous struggling or falls. Teams then check for burns, dehydration, smoke-related breathing problems, trauma and signs of malnutrition. In a documented August 30 operation in Ketapang, BKSDA West Kalimantan and YIARI also collected blood, feces and hair samples, implanted a microchip and moved an adult male to YIARI’s rehabilitation center.

Oxygen, fluids and monitoring

Smoke exposure and dehydration can require oxygen and intravenous fluids. The Ketapang team recorded smoke and a lack of nearby water at the rescue site. In a separate operation, rescuers gave the fire-injured orangutan Novita oxygen and intravenous fluids before taking her to Nyaru Menteng.

Rehabilitation before release

Animals may remain in care while staff monitor weight, wounds, respiratory health, climbing, feeding and other natural behaviors. Release requires more than physical survival: officials look for a forest that is safe from active fire, contains sufficient food and water, and is connected enough to support an independent orangutan. Weather and habitat conditions can postpone a release even after the animal improves.

Why fire threatens orangutans beyond the flames

Fire removes fruiting and leafy food, dries or contaminates water sources and can force orangutans into plantations or villages. Smoke can impair breathing, while burns may damage hands and feet needed for climbing. Habitat fragmentation also matters: an animal may survive the initial fire yet lack a large, connected forest in which to forage safely.

AP reported that Novita, estimated at three to four years old, was found clinging to a nearly leafless tree in Katune forest with burns on her palms and soles. Borneo Orangutan Survival Foundation chairman Jamartin Sihite said she was tranquilized, treated with oxygen and intravenous fluids, and taken to Nyaru Menteng. He said orangutans released with missing fingers had survived, leaving open the possibility that Novita could eventually return to the wild.

Central Kalimantan conservation agency head Andi Muhammad Kadhafi said wildfire prevention, habitat protection, monitoring and rapid response must operate together because fires threaten both people and wildlife.

How many orangutans remain

AFP cited a WWF estimate of about 104,000 orangutans remaining across Borneo and Sumatra, down from more than 230,000 a century ago. The report also said the IUCN warned that fires were burning in habitats containing 52% of Borneo’s orangutan population. Those figures explain why each rescue is both an individual medical case and a warning about the condition of the remaining habitat.

What the public should do

  • Report an orangutan seen in a burned area, plantation or settlement to BKSDA or forestry officials.
  • Keep people and pets away and do not attempt to catch, feed, transport or handle the animal.
  • Give rescuers the location, photographs from a safe distance and information about smoke, flames, water and visible injuries.
  • Do not assume that an animal able to climb is ready for release; veterinary and habitat assessments must come first.
